@@ImperfectPaintings I moved quickly rom oil to acrylic because of drying time. Although I DO love the versatility of oil and using different mediums and sometimes work it in on a base of acrylic.
Hi Dee, I understand. Drying time is the only reason I work with acrylics. I prefer oils over acrylics but it's impossible within my time schedule. I'll mention this also in the behind the scenes video.
Another great video black and white is another favourite of my. Black features in a lot of my art as it makes images pop. In your stencil picture. I wanted to plonk a single neon pink in admist, all the black ones, I will have to try to see how it changes the painting .
Hi TJ, thanks. Adding black can be very interesting. Don't tell anyone, but in one of the coming videos I will also add 1 color. Neon pink would be a good one. Thanks for the tip. Albert.
Good (Canadian) morning Albert... this lesson ranks amongst my favorites. You just helped understand better Kandinsky’s work and breathed new life into his “Point Line to Plane” boo, which I read ages ago and now (thanks to you) I am going to read again in light of the insight you provided. Also, your demos of Frank Kline work was just as inspirational. Thanks so much for sharing talents with us. I am looking forward to more and ever more of lessons.
Hi Salim, thanks. Nice to know I could help you in unexpected ways. Funny, I never know why I put, like this time, a Kandinsky-part in it, it seems just 'logically' to me, but I do it on intuition. Painting in this way is a joy to do. Although it looks simple there are always more things to learn. Happy painting and I see you next week delivering part 2. Albert
@@ImperfectPaintings soaking of intuition, when asked whether I plan my paintings, my answer has been I plan so and I seldom implement my designs. A painting plan is palm B. Plan A is intuitive.

Hi Dee, thanks. Good suggestion. I'll do a video in a few weeks about some of these things, a 'behind the scenes' video. Any other things you would like to see? Albert

Thanks for creating and posting all videos. They are very inspiring!!! Albert, can you make a video about Sylvia McEwan Art technique? I am planning to have a theme of black-and-white paintings inspired by Franz Kline's and Sylvia McEwan's artworks. Do you have any suggestions for additional videos?
Hi Max, thanks. Interesting question. I looked at the artwork of Sylvia McEwan and it is intriguing. I can see why you put her and Kline together. I will put her on my list, but I can't tell if or when I will make a video. I saw one video on her, a little interview on Saatchi art what tells it all. Do, do, do. They only way to get there. @@ImperfectPaintings Thanks Albert for replying to all comments!!! I have watched your black and white painting video over and over. And It shows me the exact techniques I have been searching for. I enjoy the amazing contrasts of black and white. Maybe you can talk a bit at some point about the struggle of a simple black and white painting looking too much like art that has already been done before. I guess I still kind of question or struggle with art that looks too copied from other artists and doing black and white really accentuates that kind of problem for me. How can I make it really mine and original if it already looks like someone else's? Is that a major enough question! Even asking that question makes me think I am missing something. Any painting I do, is mine and is original I guess. Loving your videos a ton!
Hi James, interesting question for the video. I guess all males and females look the same. But you marry the one. What's the difference? I guess you got to know her better, spend more time with her, saw details you preferred over others. Art that 'looks the same' like yours is probably quite different from your artwork. Especially in real life situations like a museum. Continue making yours, it will change slightly or massively and in a year look totally different because you evolve. Stil, interesting question. I'll look into it. Albert
I'm so pleased that this is your third video related to mark making and absract art, thank you. The first painting of yours in this video, (which you show on the wall) is wonderfull. It would sit next to any other other work of this kind, in any big gallery. I wanted it on my wall, but I would not dream of copying another's style. There is a whole world to paint!. I showed some of my calligraphic brush art, that you saw, to one of my wife's brothers. There was a pause, then he said, "What are they? Are they supposed to be something?" Then he shrugged. SIGH. Mind you, he was an inspector in the police force, what could I have expected? I'm now wondering if I can work towards automatic painting, bypassing my conscious mind, during the act of painting.
Hi Gordon, thanks. I liked the first one too. I had no plan. Just did one line and reacted on it. Not minding what it would become. It's not automatic painting but it's in that area I guess. Funny family members you have. I know the feeling. I guess it's like gardening. Some want a typical British lawn, others prefer bushes. Some put paint on a wall, others on a canvas. Will you tell me when you have success with automatic painting? Have a wonderful day, Albert
I'm loving watching your videos. I'd like your opinion on this. When doing these minimalistic paintings on stretched canvas, is it recommended or necessary to paint the background, even if it's just white paint or is it acceptable to leave bare canvas showing?
Hi Nancy, thanks. Good question. What I mostly show in my videos are ideas to get you going. So I this case minimalist black&white. I look at them as sketches. When you would do this on a canvas, even a gessoed one, I would start with a white or light layer. It maybe is hardly visible, but you would 'feel' or sense a different energy radiate from it. More layers adds a depth to it. I recommend trying it and see for yourself if this is correct. Happy painting, Albert
I'd never heard of dry swimming, but I think there's something to that exercise. I think it may be akin to capturing ideas in one's sketchbook as well. I do like Kline, and black and white painting, however, I'm more drawn to color personally. There's room in the arts for both. I too saw the figure in that last painting before you mentioned it. Some of these black and white painting reminds me of the work by Joji Nakamura, you can Google him. Most of his work is simple or minimal, others more playful.
Hi Culture Fan, in the Netherlands we have so much water a lot of people drowned each year. Dry swimming was a start. Later all kids got swimming lessons and now almost everybody can swim. I like color too but black & white have also an attractive side. Nakamura is interesting, thanks for mentioning him, I will look into it. Albert
Great video, Albert. Franz Kline is my all-time favorite artist, and I am so glad you covered his work. His influence on a lot of my own paintings is evident, but not always obvious (by design). Once again, thank you so much..!
Hi President Tom, thanks. I'm thinking about on video on Franz Kline, now I only gave to find the time for it. 😁 Somewhere next year. Stay safe, Albert
Heel leuke, interessante video Albert......bedankt!
Inderdaad mooi werk. Ga ik ook iets mee doen. Bedankt dus voor de tip. Een fijne dag, Albert
Hi Albert, your videos are inspiring and watching them has really loosened up my style. I think you might like two lesser known abstract artists, Sharon Barr and Syliva Tait. Both are contemporary Canadian artists whose paintings I really love. Of course I have to ask you to consider making a tutorial for all of us!
Hi Michele, thanks. And thanks for suggesting these two artists, it's always nice to get new ones. I can't guarantee anything but I will look into it. I'll put them on my (growing) list. Happy painting, Albert
I read somewhere that Franz Klein preferred to use normal black house paint. Apparently his agent tried to swap his house paint with expensive artist grade paint but he was furious when he discovered this.
Hi sternits, thanks. I know what you mean, it's a problem a lot of people have (me included). I don't know if you look for advice on this, but what I did to help me was to stop every now and then and take a picture. I even set a timer on 3 minutes. It's a burden for being in a flow but afterwards I looked at all the pictures and got a better idea where I start overworking. Albert
Hi again. I've emailed you just now. I understood that you were asking about automatic painting. What I didn't say, is that there is a direct link between the two. The Surrealists started automatic writing, sparked off by the sudden rise of psychoanalysis and dream states. Automatic painting came when painters realised that the same techniques could be applied to painting. (Also to musical composition and other arts).
Hi Alber, About my "Funny family members ..." All I will say about it is. One doesn't choose ones familiy, it would be a lot better if it were possible. :-( I'll send you information about Automatic writing, I'm having problems in getting hold of nuch information on it.

@@ImperfectPaintings thank you for clarifying that. Very helpful.
Dry swimming would strengthen your arms for large swooshes of black.
Hahaha zincink, you're terrific. Enjoy painting, Albert

Een fijne dag, Albert
can someone please tell me what paper and size is this? and what kind of paint of that? thank you so much! sorry im so new on the arts
Hello Marianne, in the description under the video I answer your question: acrylics and 50x65cm. Enjoy, Albert
Thanks, Michele, for the info on Sharon Barr and Sylvia Tait! Going to look them up right now 👍
I read somewhere that Franz Klein preferred to use normal black house paint. Apparently his agent tried to swap his house paint with expensive artist grade paint but he was furious when he discovered this.
Hi D G, thanks. Yes I heard a similar story. There are more artist who used house paint, it's cheap. Albert

Auctioneer: Okay, we shall start the bidding at 20 million dollar.
LOL, thanks Vince, but I don't sell my work. I guess you have to make your own version. Albert
I love painting in black and white. However, I struggle with knowing when to stop and not overwork a piece.
Albert
@@ImperfectPaintings This is a fantastic idea. Thank you so much. I will definitely try this.
Hi Gordon, I see, sounds logical. Thanks, Albert
Hi Alber,
About my "Funny family members ..." All I will say about it is. One doesn't choose ones familiy, it would be a lot better if it were possible. :-( I'll send you information about Automatic writing, I'm having problems in getting hold of nuch information on it.
Hi Gordon, I thought I had put funny like "funny" but forgot the little things. Sorry. I know, choose friends and get relatives. I know about automatic writing, I thought you had info on automatic painting. But send it anyway. Thanks, Albert
Wonderful
Thanks Deep Kumar
