I’m a resident here, it’s not a safe place to live anymore, on the 8th of November someone junkies tried to break in, on my floor there’s about 3-4 people left, everything else is boarded, we are desperate to move but we can’t find any homes that are suitable for my parents health needs, there’s leaks everywhere, rats and mice, I’ve lived here my entire life and hated it since I was a child, this place is a ghost town, and in winter when it gets dark a lot sooner it gets really eerie, it’s so quiet, I really cannot wait to get out of this place
I use to have friends that lived on this Estate and i hated it when I use to visit...I lived the next Estate along on the Heygate, but it was demolished (thankfully lol cos it was just as bad). The best thing they could do is demolish it! But I know exactly what would happen they would flog off 90% of it at an exorbitant amount, which would just leave 10% left for affordable council housing. Thats exactly what they did with the Heygate....and there's not enough affordable housing any more
The reports on ITN have shown it's councils of all parties and also housing associations etc that preside over situations like this and have to be publically shamed into doing anything. In large cities such as London the approach now is to sell off the social housing sites for developers to slap up overpriced boxes that they can sell to owners on the other side of the world. The former tenants are barely even treated as an afterthought. The whole situation and sense of 'priorities' is completely immoral.
The Liberal Democrats screwed up the regeneration projects in Southwark, that's why Heygate has no social housing and why none of the original residents were given right to return. The New housing was supposed to have been built as they demolished the old but it didn't go to plan and now it's happening with the Aylesbury
Horrible conditions but as a nearby resident and someone who grew up in council shouting, I don’t understand when so many of the estate residents get new houses in the regeneration, they don’t look after them. The new stuff will end up just as bad. This on top of poor management on the level of its predecessor.
@@lynnecromack4933 How can they open the window when it’s freezing cold and the council refuses to give them basic human needs like a heating system that actually works. So dumb. Think before you open your dutty, stinkin mouth.
Mould isn’t always the fault of the tenants, often it’s the design and quality of the building, these are concrete buildings made with pre-fabricated panels in the 1960s, they were built in post war bomb damaged London as a relatively temporary quick fix for the housing crisis at the time, and by now are past their expiry date. Most were only built to last around 50 years, which is one of the main reasons it’s now being demolished. You can clean this mould off but it’s still going to come straight back, a lack of insulation is also usually the root of the issue
Even in your own property, you can have issues with condensation, damp and mould. Sometimes some basic education can really help, like investing in a dehumidifier, which has really made a difference in my flat. Hanging the washing on an airer, instead of the radiators, and putting the dehumidifier next to it, which sucks out so much water, it’s brill. My point is, if those living in council houses suddenly where living in their own property, you have to take responsibility for sorting out the inside of your home, - it’s not something you get taught, I grew up on a council estate, no central heating, single glazed windows, we would breath out cold air in the mornings and have to wait for the water to heat up before we could have a bath.
Nope! These are structural problems. The council should be able to bring in professionals for the bigger work but they don’t. Mould is a nightmare and some places spawn it even after a week after cleaning.
If you don't have a combined household income of at least £80k then what are you doing in London? Other parts of the UK are cheaper where you can get better quality of living and better environments for children. I understand some people might have an attachment to London because that is all they know but it gets to a point where you have to let the city go and accept it's outside your affordability range.
People have friends, families and memories associated where they grew up, in this case London. By telling them to simply ‘move’ somewhere cheaper, that’s not addressing the actual issue of underfunding these properties from the council and instead passing the responsibility onto the people that live there. It’s not fair to say someone can’t live in an area at all because of it’s prices, if they are in social housing, they deserve to have a secure, safe home to live in, just like people who can afford private accommodation do.
London might sound like a posh, luxury city to you outsiders but it’s home for us. We don’t see it as a luxury city, we have never lived in luxury and all we want is to be safe and near our friends and family. Packing up and leaving isn’t an option when all you know is London. You need to realise we are locals, not tourists. We have a vastly different experience and attachment.
@Frankie Dettori You commute cause you can’t afford to live here. And you’re not from here so you don’t know much about the city. You can get dangerous areas and also affluent, village-like places like Highgate, Dulwich, Belsize Park, Hampstead, Finchley, Primrose Hill… to more upscale places like Kensington, Fitrovia… etc etc etc. I’ve lived in London for 30 years and have never been mugged. The stories you hear about are mostly from clueless people who have moved here from the shires or know it alls like you who really don’t know much about the inner workings of the city. London isn’t even top 10 for crime in the UK. It’s shit holes like Sheffield and Glasgow who are leading with the most heinous crimes. London is just popular so people want to hear about it but no one is really following the vile chavs up North and all the incest, rapes, mutilations, torture and other wayward shit that the weirdos up there like to engage in.
@Frankie Dettori I agree. I used to live in London as a child, then family moved to Southampton in late 80s then back to London in early 2000. London is a $hithole! It is no more than an airport waiting area. Some parts look appealing but it's like Pinocchios pleasure Island. Sure it's a place to visit/commute but not a place to live. It's rundown and lots of boroughs are under funded and don't invest. Also people are NOT friendly and there is NO community. The air is $h1t, the schools are $h1t, the cost of living is $h1t healthcare services are $h1t, driving is $h1t and the accommodation/housing is beyond $h1t. There aren't many good points at all! 👀

Sad to see, but it’s comes from the mentality like my husband has: in council estate lives the plebs. Despite that he grew up in a wealthy family he was disabled with Parkinson’s and his parents were selfish, didn’t support him at all. So he could be happy if the council gives him a nice place, but he would not go, because he looked down on them. Really terrible…
