I recently purchased plastic boning for a project I'm preparing to sew. This video helped me understand the techniques, as I will be applying mine to the lining of the bustier of the jumpsuit. Thanks!
Yasss hunny…u have all the methods In one video….I don’t have to look at any other boning videos…I have the video I need right here!!….thank u so much 🥰
Very useful, thanks! I like both the double and single boning, depending on the overall style of the garment I would say. Also I love the way you say 'da bonin' ☺️
Thank you so much, it depends I usually use steel spiral boning. But sometimes I use a 12mm Rigilene boning and put a 1/4 plastic boning in side the casing. But it all depends on the style of your design. Steel spiral boning goes around curves. Rigilene boning and plastic boning does not.. you can curve Rigilene boning by forcing it by pulling the white little wires inside the Rigilene boning but that’s extra work. for large bust you have to put interfacing on the main fabric or lining or both and a lot of boning to hold the client up. It has to be really structured. Hope this helped 🥰
I’m a wardrobe stylist now officially stepping into design after years of repurposing clothing to be a beginner this seems so easy thanks to your detailed directions! Thankyou for your insight girl. 💜💜💜
Really like this tutorial, it’s direct and to the point, no faffing or unnecessary chatter. One question: I often hear one-fourth, where I would say a quarter - is this not common in America? (I live in the UK).
This is so neat! I have not worked with boning yet. But with this video, I think I am ready to try. I like the look of two instead of one. Thank you for creating this tutorial!
This was so helpful when I was in school they only taught one way and I’ve been confused about the other way since then so this makes things make so much more sense thank you ❤
Thank you!! 🥰❤️ A bustier accentuates the bust while a corset works on the waist. A corset can decrease your waist size by 2-4 inches, a bustier can add the same to your bust. Although corsets and bustiers look similar ,they are completely different garments, designed and constructed very differently and with completely different purposes. An easy way to remember the difference between the two is a corset “cinches” while a bustier “boosts”. Shaping. Both garments are meant to fit close to the body. A bustier may or may not be boned, but corsets depend on boning to help cinch the wearer's torso.
thank you so much for this. its so helpful for my next project. i for sure have to make sure i slightly burn my plastic boning ends and try to soften the edges. i didnt once and over time, it ripped the ends of my bodice it was in. the ends were sharp and friction and stuff. thank you :)
That was great info! Thanks for sharing. I’m working on a wedding dress for my daughter who wears a 32DDD bra. Is plastic boning ok for over the bust, or do you recommend spiral steel?
Thank you 🥰…you can use steel boning, however there is another way I did some research recently and found out that u can actually burn the plastic boning to curve how u want it.
This is amazing, thank you! I have a question! When sewing bustiers, why don't we sew the boning channels through both the main fabric and the lining, when they are exposed on the main fabric, like in method 3? To avoid visible sewing lines on the lining? I would think that having the boning sewn to both layers would provide additional structural support but clearly there is a reason it’s not done, would love your thoughts!
Thank you so much, I am a new subscriber & i must commend u are a good teacher. If i am boning a bustier is it advisable to stop under bust instead of going tru to the bust line?
Hi welcome to the community…glad u are here!!…so there is a way to clip the seam allowance at the sides under the bust at the princess line then cut the plastic boning in half, put one half inside from the top of the princess line and put the other half from the bottom of the princess line…but the problem that can happen is the top boning can come out or stick out. Maybe u can put something on top of that separation so it doesn’t some out…maybe hemming tape….But u can try to see what works for you…hope that helped ❤️
It depends on the curve of the princess line for big breast. The Rigilene boning does not curve unless you force it by putting the little wires in them and curve the boning a little..but if you have big breast you can try a sample and see if the Rigilene boning works good on the princess line on the bustier etc.
Thank u, I would use steel boning when it comes to a size D or bigger…but if u don’t have that…try a bigger size plastic boning like a 1/2 inch…the one I’m using in the video is a size 1/4 Plastic boning.
Question: does the term bodice refer to only ladies patterns? Second, I am sketching a Calf leather jerkin and wondered if boning would be needed for structure?
While some thicker calf leather jerkins might be stiff enough to stand alone, most will benefit from boning for structure and shape retention. Steel bones are the most common and offer varying degrees of flexibility depending on their thickness and shape (flat or spiral). When choosing boning, consider the desired level of shaping, comfort, and the overall style of your jerkin.
heyy I have a question, if I have a silly type of fabric like the green one in the video is it necessary to add underlining to it if i’m making a corset?
There are different types of corsets, some are regular and some are waist trainers for certain corsets u can put underlining behind the main fabric then lining…. For the cup u can put interfacing behind the main fabric for more structure. And you can put interfacing behind corset pieces
Loved meeting your kitty! Halfway through your video I realized why you introduced us all to your bestie. The scratch on your hand! Got it. Adamina Therapeutic Repair Lotion works Great on minor wounds like scratches and is a lovely all around hand/body lotion. Also your kitty has a language that we can learn by paying attention to their body language and vocalizations. May cats can become overstimulated by petting them. They enjoy a little but quickly let us know they are done. Before the scratches come, you may notice the kitty become stiff, or put their ears back. When you see this happen let her find her own way off your lap or gently let her be. Its kind of like being at the hair dresser and they are brushing your hair and it feels good...then they start rubbing their face in your hair telling you how good your hair smells... You would get stiff, then fly off scratching that person too as you went 😂 Anyway to really understand kitty brains a great person named Jackson Galaxy has written a few books on understanding cat language. You can also find videos on RUclips, Each cat has their own treasured personality. I wish you and your kitty a long lovely life together! 💖 I'm LOVING Your Video! Thank you So Much for sharing! At 15:17, she made a pink corset using which method among the 9 ways? Thank you so much, i’m just beginner, plz anybody help me answer for this question ❤
Sometimes it works it all depends on how the princess line curves also the Rigilene boning would work better if you use a bias tape with the Rigilene boning inside and sew it to the front
This video is so helpful...I want to attach mine to a bustier..but am confused about the line in the middle should I cut through the middle of the bustier to make a seame allowance for the double bonning at the middle..how do I go about it Ma.
Hi, you can also do it for bustiers….it doesn’t have to have a seam in the middle…..u can make a casing in the back of the front corset to put the boning in…it’s all up to u as a designer….❤️
Plastic doesn’t curve unless u burn under it so it curves or u can use Spiral steel boning which is the strongest and it curves to busty princess line. I use spiral steel boning most of the time.
The best boning is steel metal boning but if a person can’t find that you can use 1/2 (12mm) Rigilene boning and put a 1/4 plastic boning inside the casing.
I want to know, doing double bonning on a bustier , the middle piece which will be placed on fold, do I have to cut that into two ? I need an answer pls. Thank you

Hello. What sizes where the regilene and the clear boning?
Hi, the rigilene boning is 12mm and the plastic boning is 1/4
So in the cups above c which Boning should we use plastic?
Plastic doesn’t curve unless u burn under it so it curves or u can use Spiral steel boning which is the strongest and it curves to busty princess line. I use spiral steel boning most of the time.
And which is the best rigilene or the other boning
The best boning is steel metal boning but if a person can’t find that you can use 1/2 (12mm) Rigilene boning and put a 1/4 plastic boning inside the casing.
