Just getting books, patterns and materials together for my very first corset at the grand age of 60 working on the principle that age is just a number, you are never too old to try something new, and given the state of the world we are in it’s time to stop prevaricating and just jolly well get on with it.! Thanks so much for this, I feel heartened and inspired to get on with it. Have to say I love that green canvass - very Robin Hood’s maid Marian of Sherwood Forest (wrong period -bad for the corset but totally right for you!) 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳(edited)

I just wrap myself in plastic wrap and duct tape, draw the waist line and vertical seams. It worked for my version of 18th century stays, renaissance pair of bodies and my edwardian corsets.

I am supposed to be in bed but I can't go to bed when there's a new Morgan donner CORSET VIDEO. Only clothing I've made is a circle skirt but this is very aspirational for me.
I've literally put my "late Victorian" skirt (the one Bernadette Banner links in her video where she makes a Victorian walking skirt) project on hold until I'm at least halfway done with my corset because I really wanna try it on with the corset on as well :). I'd also attempted to make a circle skirt before but lost interest, mostly because I only had a wrong fabric available and didn't like the print on the fabric either. Edit: Victorian not Edwardian, I'm bad at telling different fashion period things apart, I'm just in for the wisdom of old tailoring masters and beautiful and informative videos lol.
I know you probably get lots of "helpful" advice, but when you say that you need to raise both the top edges, and the base of the bust, that tells me that you probably need to lengthen the waist. I'm very short-waisted, and this took me a long time to learn, but now waist-length is always the first thing I look for when fitting things to myself or others, and it's made a tremendous difference!
@@MorganDonner Please do give in. I generally have to add 3-4 inches of extra waist to anything I sew (because I have a freakishly long torso), and with all of those different panels that widen and narrow at different points, the thought of trying to do that is kinda terrifying.

@Clara J i'm personally just starting to learn something with my grandma who is a seamstress , so i'm going to wait and try to learn a little bit more before trying to make a corset , but one day i will because i also have some back problems.
This video changed my life. Seriously. For years, YEARS, I always did my corsets using some variation of the third method, with three layers of fabric: outer, duck canvas/coutil/etc in the middle, then lining. I'd stitch the seam allowance down on the middle layer for the boning. So much work to do all that, especially with the many-seamed complicated corset patterns I loved making. My junior collection in fashion school I made FIVE corsets using the slowest methods. All this time I could have been using method 2 to create a quicker sturdy corset with topstitching like I always wanted to figure out how to make. I'm furious no one taught me that before. I'm so happy to learn this method I could cry.
This has given me the motivation I needed during this crazy time to finally make the same red corset from Patterns of Fashion 5 that you made. My uni work has ground to a halt and thanks to this I can't wait to get started. X
I’m waiting on my materials to make my first corset, and I’ve been watching ALL the RUclips videos. This is my favorite- I’ve watched it start to finish about 20 times. Your directions are so clear and manner so soothing, you make corsetry seem accessible to beginners... EDIT: Just finished my first mock-up! You’re right, the second method was MUCH easier than sewing all those channels on, and faster too. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I love the green fabric for the corset and the green screen effect made me laugh. I thought that a colourful corset might made a unique piece of clothing to layer with (similar to what you did in your livestream with costuming drama) and now I want to make one. Thank you for demistifying the process of making a corset!
just came here after watching the third foundations revealed sleeve workshop. It makes my quarantine that much better to have so much amazing content, thank you!
Exactly when you were taking your mandated domestic animal attention break, my kitty had just jumped up onto my chair and I was giving her pets and scratches. Katherine is so cute in her outfit!
I really need to learn how to sew (any day now (thinking end of the month) I'll give it a go) and eventually I want to make my own corset you and Bernadette Banner have inspired me, especially your comment on a older video about a good corset is more comfortable that a standard bra. Also love the "green screening" your corset!
I saw that video of the lady who made a corset specifically for support during horseback riding, and she said it solved all her pain issues that modern bras couldn’t handle. I’m beginning to think that modern society has regressed in terms of functional underwear. I’ve tried spanx (just for the waist fat smoothing control) and it was the most horrible, painful 15 minutes of my life (I ordered a size larger than their sizing recommendation). I’ve also tried a cheap $30 corset, and it was way more comfortable than the spanx, though it was so ill fitting to my proportions that I never wore again after testing it for 45 minutes.
I love watching you work, but the highlight of your videos (for me) is seeing your greys. I used to have greys as well, and miss them. I'm hoping to get another couple in a few years. Thank you for showing your babies so often.
I get SO WARM all the time, always, no matter the actual temperature, so I'm definitely going to try a single layer corset first. No idea when, since I can't go to a fabric store right now and I don't want to buy fabric sight unseen, but single layer is almost certainly the way for me. The fewer layers I have to wear, the better!!
Take care to choose a material that breathes; linen or cotton is best for this, as silk doesn’t breathe quite as well and finding wool that is both lightweight enough and strong enough for a corset is likely to be impossible. Of course, wearing a cotton or linen chemise underneath is also essential - no synthetic fibres allowed there either.
I made a single layer corset yesterday and I have a tank top underneath the corset and a t shirt over, so 3 layers. I have not yet graduated to a linen chemise. Always supposed to have a layer between skin and corset. I live in Brisbane and temp today is 30° with 60% humidity. I am reasonably comfortable, no hotter than if I wasn’t wearing the corset
You are singlehandedly the only person I've watched that has shown and explained how to make a corset in a way that my simple mind can actually understand. I don't sew, so a lot of the terminology evades me like the plague, but you've physically and verbally explained it all in a way I understood. Thank you so much.
Morgan I absolutely LOVE your instructional video on 3 ways to make a corset!! You make a very daunting project look so easy! Having make several corsets myself, none of which I like/wear, I believe I can now attack the project once again and make a corset that I will actually wear!! Thank you SO much!!! You are a corset goddess!!!
I love that you called out mirrors for being devious and full of lies. SO TRUE. I'm thinking of making my first corset, and this video is super helpful!
Miss Morgan, the green screen had me laughing after a highly stressful day! Thanks for knowing how to take something slightly scary (like corset making!) and making it feel accessible, while providing us with some solid gold humour along the way :-)
maybe this gets lost in the comment section, but you have no idea how much I needed this video! for YEARS I've been meaning to make a corset (since here are so damn expensive) and now you've given me the knowledge... Sicerely, thank you form the bottom of my heart
I went back and rewatched the magical transforming corset bit so many times, you have no idea. Thank you so much for all the laughs Morgan! Oh, and the information was quite helpful too! Thank you!! Take care 😊💚
I don't know if you will get this message since this video is a year old but, wow your a good teacher and I like your personality. You're sewing talent is great and you don't talk a lot of nonsense just to hear yourself talk like many others doing sewing videos! Best video of Corset making and I have watched several, your good. I'm going to watch your other videos when I can I believe I can learn from you and your talent. I have bought several corsets these past few years and even though I buy a extra large I get size three ones so I have been watching corset videos and you are by far a talented lady! Keep helping us who have a brain but no knowledge of some garments. Thanks for all the links to to buy what I will need when I start one in the new year. I'm swamped at the time with making curtains and dresses for the church untill the end of December.
I love when mockups are pretty and neatly finished, and yours are gorgeous! It’s amazing how much it can affect your perception of how well the mockup works. Now I need to make all my mockups in green so they can be green screens for fabric options! 😄
Not sure how I ended up on your channel, but you know how it works, you start looking for victorian hairstyles and before you know it you are watching someone making a stay and then a corset :) I can't sew, but enjoyed watching you do it. And then seeing you have the same taste in domestic animals as I do, thats a win. Thank you, enjoyed this a lot.
Now I really want to sew my own dream wedding dress with an incorporated corset like these but then I remembered that I can‘t sew yet and am not even in a relationship. ...still
Well, if you start sewing now you will at least be less intimidated by a wedding dress whenever you do get married :P And never too old to learn. Buy some wool, make a simple skirt, learn from your mistakes and make another :P cheers from another beginner who's terrified of her fourth corset mockup xD
Damn, congratulations, you have made the only remotely easy to understand corset tutorial I have ever seen from over a year of looking off and on, getting overwhelmed and shutting down, and then trying again a few weeks later. And THREE of them at that.
I just finished my first pair of stays, and I have the feeling corsets are easier, provided that the pattern fits you reasonably well. Stays have 1000000 boning channels!
I have been making mid to late Victorian corsets for nearly two decades and finally finished my rococo stays and let me tell you that I never want to make stays again. I am itching to make a new corset again. This is following a progressive timeline of making corded stays for a Regency dress as well. Unfortunately I didn't get the fit right and I'll have to make a second set.
You just thought me so much! And inspired me to bring out that sewing machine my mum gave me when I turned 30... ...and maybe best of all.. your dog is super cute! Thanks for sharing, pet and talent!
I've been sewing for 14 years and NEVER knew about the Double Weld (or even the single weld) method! I'm going right home and trying this for myself oh man!
lol love the fabric test idea .... i use the green for my wall so the games show better. Hope you an your family furry family too are all doing well in this crazy time we are all in.
I recently bought an edwardian style corset off of etsy after having decided i would wear one with my Cinderella gown for graduation and it is my favourite thing. A year ago i would've never in 100 years bought a corset of any kind but thanks to your videos as well as Karolina's and Bernadette's, i know it's not going to decapitate me or break my ribs and it's really doing great things for my back! I wore it all day today (still in the process of seasoning it), even to walk my dogs and do my habitual stream shenanigans! Mum was skeptical at first but she's a believer now hahaha. I love your videos and will definitely start making my own corsets! I'm even considering getting a summer job at a historical site while in college :)
I've literally been doing research to make a corset for the past week or so. RUclips algorithm knows me well. Do you have any advice for making a corset with minimal bust, or is it all in the mockup? Is there any material that's more "flowery" or with a design that could be used for the outer layer while coutil remains inside? Thank you so much for this tutorial!
If you make/buy a pattern that has too much room in the bust, just pinch it out in your first mockup and add those changes to the pattern for the next mockup. You can totally have a pretty fashion fabric, just flat line it to the sturdy/coutil layer and follow the 'single layer' method from there!
I've never seen anyone do the double welt method, but it's brilliant! I started on a corset not long ago, but got disheartened by how difficult the construction was. I had been watching the construction methods of some of the most precise and talented corsetieres, but it didn't occur to me that I don't have to be so intense. Haha. Thank you for this video! A wonderful tutorial!
I've made a corset once, and it was part of my wedding dress. The last version had 3 layers. I think? It might have been 4... The layer touching me was a simple soft white cotton, raw edges enclosed in the corset. Then I had a very strong cotton (raw sides enclosed but facing lining) on which I sewed all the structural parts; bones, waisttapes, etc. Then on the outside I had the pretty stuff (satin & lace), again raw sides enclosed. So basically comfy layer - structural layer - pretty layer. There might have been an extra cotton layer somewhere but I can't remember...
Holy macaroni! When I saw you cut the thread on the side of your sewing machine 🤯🤯🤯I ran to my sewing machine and I’m so excited to find my sewing machine has one too!!! I’ve only owned my machine for 10 years and never ever noticed it before, my mind is blown and my life is better because of you! Lol I’m easily pleased 😁 THANKS HEAPS!
Did you read my mind?!? I’ve been thinking about making a corset all week because of this quarantine. This video is perfect, clear and easy to understand. Thank you!
So excited to find your videos. My husband joined the SCA last year and guess who got sewing duty :D I'm learning so much, which is good because I am NOT a seamstress by any means.
Oh hey, thing #423 I can sew while self quarantining. Hell, I've got everything I need to do it, including specialty supplies like the busk and boning. My immune system may be low, but my productivity is high!
The coastline corset was my favourite; those crashing waves were very evocative. Pure bodice-ripper fodder! (Strains of Kate Bush's voice keening in the background "Heeeathcliff, it's meee, it's Cathyyyy, I've come home again..!")
I love that you used weaving tablets to weight down the pattern pieces hahaha ☺ would you make a tablet weaving tutorial? I love weaving (mainly andean pieces hahaa) would be great to see you explaining the technique!
Your red previous 17th century stays you made inspired me to do a million mockups for my Elizabethan Effigy stays. Now I am doing a fully boned mockup before buying the fancy pants fabric.
Thank you for making the task of corsetry look a little more straight forward! In one of your recent videos you talked about how you thought creating had to be done in the original, historical methods and you got overwhelmed so you simplified and did a pattern. I needed that so much, and then to follow up with this and make it seem very straight forward and simple, inspired me! Time to get a pattern and give it a go! Question, what do you do if you're bigger in the tummy than the bust or hips (4 babies will do that)? Also, where is the best resource for stays and corset patterns?
Add some to the lower front panels if you need to. Definitely try a mock-up first! There are many corset pattern sellers, and so many different time periods, it's hard to recommend just one! I'd say google around, and read reviews to see which might be the best fit for what you are looking for.
And now again I want to try it out... but still fear of failure makes me a master of procrastination xDD instead, I am making another victorian skirt cause I just love them 😅
I know that one thumbs down I see must have come from someone highly disappointed that the green pen explosion was not included. I however am forgiving.
The perfect corset for film in order to look like youre a skinny legend......since you have no waist at all if youre on camera in front of a green screen.
Thank you for this! I’m working on an 1880s outfit, starting with the underclothes, and next up is the corset. I’m leaning towards the bag method, due to probably needing to add gores at the hips and wanting to add cording under the arms, but it was great getting to see how each method was done and how they differ.
The green screen corset was everything I needed today.
Me too! It was great!

When the green screen changed to the ocean and wheat field, it reminded me so much of the Disney "Day & Night" short and I just love that
Morgan I absolutely LOVE your instructional video on 3 ways to make a corset!! You make a very daunting project look so easy! Having make several corsets myself, none of which I like/wear, I believe I can now attack the project once again and make a corset that I will actually wear!! Thank you SO much!!! You are a corset goddess!!!
Really looking forward to the finished corset. I love how carefully you craft everything you make. This corset is no exception.
I love that you called out mirrors for being devious and full of lies. SO TRUE.
I'm thinking of making my first corset, and this video is super helpful!
My favorite part of this, was the green screen corset, you are a clever lady
This video is by far the best, fastest, clearest, most informative corset video I've seen on YT. Excellent!👍🏻
Yay, I am glad! Now go make that corset!
@@MorganDonner I actually did! I don't have a reliable sewing machine so I did it by hand, but is mine
Not sure how I ended up on your channel, but you know how it works, you start looking for victorian hairstyles and before you know it you are watching someone making a stay and then a corset :)
I can't sew, but enjoyed watching you do it.
And then seeing you have the same taste in domestic animals as I do, thats a win.
Thank you, enjoyed this a lot.
Now I really want to sew my own dream wedding dress with an incorporated corset like these but then I remembered that I can‘t sew yet and am not even in a relationship.
...still
You have time to learn!
That means when you do have a wedding you'll be an expert!
OMG SAME
Well, if you start sewing now you will at least be less intimidated by a wedding dress whenever you do get married :P And never too old to learn. Buy some wool, make a simple skirt, learn from your mistakes and make another :P cheers from another beginner who's terrified of her fourth corset mockup xD
Same, man, same. But why can't a girl have a great dress anyway?
@@Textile_Courtesan my stays are literally stained with my blood, thankfully it got covered by the binding
I am in awe. An superhuman level of sewing and construction.
That was such a good commentation. Now I want to make one myself. I finished my first stays. And now I think I make a corset. This was so helpful.
I am glad to hear that it was helpful!
You just thought me so much! And inspired me to bring out that sewing machine my mum gave me when I turned 30... ...and maybe best of all.. your dog is super cute! Thanks for sharing, pet and talent!
I was not previously aware of the second method but I think I'm in love...
I am a big fan, it feels so sturdy when done too!
I've been sewing for 14 years and NEVER knew about the Double Weld (or even the single weld) method!
I'm going right home and trying this for myself oh man!
Absolutely LOVE the green! Wouldn't mind having the time (and funds) to make my own one day. Can't wait to see it finished!
Not only was this incredibly easy to understand, you also look like you‘re from another century, truly ethereal.
lol love the fabric test idea .... i use the green for my wall so the games show better.
Funny green screen! I don’t know if I’ll ever be brave enough to make my own corset, but this gets me a little closer
I'm waiting for my busk and boning to come in the mail and you posting this video just increased my hype 110%
Loved the changing colors of the corset at the end! It lets you try out your fashion fabric before cutting! Wonderful!
That was the best content to self-promo transition I've ever seen. Loved the ocean corset, wherever did you get such a detailed fabric XD
Aww, that's awesome! I love that little side machine cutter!
The slight chuckle at 10:00 makes me want to hear an attempt at an evil cackle...
This video is so helpful! I know practically nothing about sewing but you made everything easy to follow and i love your sense of humour. thank u!!
I’ve never seen the double welt before, that’s really cool! I think I’m going to try that on my next project :)
I’m a relatively new amateur home sewer, I’ve made a few baby and children’s dungarees etc but wow! I love watching you work!
definitely coming back to this video when i start making my own corset!! so much wonderful information!
This has to be the most useful and easiest to follow corset making video I've seen! The second method was definitely a favorite 😊
I've laughed sooo much, after you started to have fun with the green screen corset💚
The double welted method is blowing my mind and exactly what I needed to finish my “fashion” corset! Thank you!
Its def on the list! I am a beginner at best, but sharing the basics would be fun!
you're so professional and well spoken but you still can see the irony in things and be funny! i'm totally new to this but you gained a subscriber :)
This is the most relaxing video I've ever seen. Also one I save for future sewing ideas, noob that I am.
Your red previous 17th century stays you made inspired me to do a million mockups for my Elizabethan Effigy stays. Now I am doing a fully boned mockup before buying the fancy pants fabric.
Lol, movie magic at the end !
I don't know why i keep watching these sewing videos it literally goes in one ear and out the other.
God, I love you so much Morgan! That ending with using your corset as a greenscreen made my day, thank you!
This is extremely timely as I finish my very first corset. Would love to see some tips on rescuing badly installed grommets. (Guess why? :P )
Oh, that's an excellent suggestion, thank you!
Maybe I just need to buy a better grommet kit?
No long introduction!! You're my favorite person now.
And now again I want to try it out... but still fear of failure makes me a master of procrastination xDD instead, I am making another victorian skirt cause I just love them 😅
I mean... more skirts is never a bad thing :D
I'm about to make my first corset ever and this is so helpful! It's not so scary after all, can't wait to start sewing.
The green screen fabric was great and then you did the ocean and I died.
"What's that print?"
"Ocean.gif. Bought it at JoAnn's."
I watched this 2 years ago (I think) and it's till extremely useful. I'm watching it again and didn't realize what I've forgotten about
Making a corset seems so hard, but then you just whip up 3 in a row! I'm pretty sure I need a lot more practice sewing in general before I try one.
strange.. all your mockups always look so much better than any finished project i ever made 🤔 oh and I vote for the grain-field-in-the-wind pattern 😘😃
"It's possible I learned this the hard way." Relatable af 😆
I'm literally screaming when you turned your mock-up to a green screen then transition smoothly to the last binding scene, lost for words
I know that one thumbs down I see must have come from someone highly disappointed that the green pen explosion was not included. I however am forgiving.
I too am disappointed that I didn't get that on camera! I understand thumbsdown person.
You got me at no long introduction. Subscribed!
HaHA, I would wear corsets for cosplays if they wouldn't make me feel dysphoric or, y'know, if I was already binding at the time, unable to breathE--
I really like watching videos like this, it helps me grasp an understanding of how to draw a corset on my characters :)
Green screen corset. 🤣
The perfect corset for film in order to look like youre a skinny legend......since you have no waist at all if youre on camera in front of a green screen.
I loved that bit!
This was so entertaining AND instructional! I came here just for relaxation, but now I'm tempted to make my own corset!
i absolutely adore putting your videos on while i do my less involved sewing projects, it really feels like a crafting party in times like these
Thank you for this! I’m working on an 1880s outfit, starting with the underclothes, and next up is the corset. I’m leaning towards the bag method, due to probably needing to add gores at the hips and wanting to add cording under the arms, but it was great getting to see how each method was done and how they differ.
