How to Flush a Toilet - Hidden Feature

- Sounds silly, but many are not aware that the modern WaterSense toilets have two levels of flushes. This comes in handy when toilets are located farm away from the main septic or sewer lines of the house.
I just flushed 7:39 minutes of my life away watching this!
Me too
You have a great looking home Doc!!! Now I am going to run around and test my toilets!!
There was a bumper sticker years ago when the govt started mandating lower volume toilets, and the first generation of these failed miserably. The sticker read: "Flush twice, it is a long way to Washington".
Wow Doc... You really need for it to stop raining. LOL
At 62 years young, my wife and I have high rise toilets. They are easier on our aging joints. Two years ago, I was in an auto accident and broke my left arm. Hello world, introducing the bidet. No more paper work for me. It was a game changer for me. I ❤️ my bidet.
Most the world is bidet rinse, or soap and water instead of wiping and leaving a thin film of bacteria laden bile in the Crack. Normalize bidets in the USA.
I just don’t understand how Bidets can get you completely clean. Especially when you have one of those, “Endless Wipes” poops. You know the ones that feel like spackle on your butt? Ya, spraying water on that wouldn’t do a damn thing but make it a Wet mess!😫
Great video I’ve tried explaining this a million times to people and they just don’t understand lol😂 simple physics
😂😂 ok Doc, my grandma was over and we were watching this video and she said," he should be watering the lawn in the opening logo and cutting the lawn at the end, when his mug pops up on screen". I'm still laughing 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The best thing to do for poo is when you are still setting on the toilet reach around and push and hold. Then do your paperwork and flush again. No more plugs.
Exactly, flush as many times as you want. Myself 4 to 5 flushes does the trick.
Slightly modified method…. reach around, press, and hold down 3 seconds. Also do the ‘paperwork’ separately. TP only, no wipes. Paid a plumber $150 for that advice.
@@sgh416yes those “flushable wipes” are not flushable makes me angry that they advertise that because we have a brainless society right now .
LOL I call the first flush after initial blowout the courtesy flush! Be courteous to yourself and anyone else in the house, no one wants to smell your 💩💩! Each subsequent blowout deserves its own flush as well! And what's up with the exhaust vent being up in the ceiling? Okay, shower steam. But why don't we have a lower exhaust at toilet bowl height to vent the stank? Sucking it out of toilet bowl and up to the ceiling just makes the whole room stink! We need someone to market a toilet bowl vent.
Only Doc could make this video almost 8 minutes long. 😂
I have a toilet that flushes 2-3 times every flush. To my knowledge, it's not a water sense, but it did the double flush for years, without holding the handle down longer. I changed out all the tank components and would still double flush. Last year, it started triple flushing and no one has been able to explain why. One septic inspector said I should call an exorcist because it's possessed. LOL
I am in the small percentage that figured this out for myself. You can also duplicate this longer flush by using a flapper that is adjustable for the length of time it stays open. I am not sure whether the video is demonstrating a better flush by holding down the handle or performing a second flush before the tank refills. If you hold down the handle the extra water will extend the siphon action (aka flush) a little longer allowing more contents to exit the bowl. Once the trap fills, the flush action stops and holding the lever down longer doesn't do anything as the excess water flows into the trap but isn't strong enough the re-initiate another flush cycle. A second flush before the tank is full will use less water than waiting for the tank to fill and, as shown in the video, if done before the siphoning action has stopped will keep the siphoning action going longer which may clear the bowl. Note also, this will only work with toilets that have a flapper. Many new toilets have been completely redesigned to improve performance beyond what is required by the smart sense standard. These toilets have a large canister in the tank with no visible flapper. If you flush while the tank is open you will see the canister raise for a second and then drop back down. These toilets are designed to increase the speed and volume of water over a shorter period of time than the typical toilets that use a flapper.
Flushing a low flow toilet twice is a feature? Sounds more like a requirement.
I didn't know this was a designed feature, but I discovered it by accident many years ago and have frequently done this to get more water to flow down the drain.
House looks beautiful. Thanks Doc!
We need more than 1.28 gallons in my house… thanks for the video 😂 😷 💩
One thing to remember not all low volume toilets are created equal. Some work very well and don’t need the extra flush. When replacing one do some research it is worth the time.
I already knew this but it's good information for people who don't.
I also have a long run to the septic tank, so we all just hold the flush lever down until the tank is empty. Personally, I think toilets have a more powerful flush, but I still miss a 5 gallon flush toilet. I'm pretty sure tanks only hold 3 gallons of water now.
Hey Doc, just hold the handle down when you drop a big Duce , it works better!
I say that in the video as an option.
Our home (3 1/2 baths) is equipped with Mansfield toilets. These toilets aren't advertised as "water efficient" units, but they do have a unique feature. They do not use a "flapper type" flush valve. They use a cylinder that rests on a circular gasket. This allows the user to "short flush" the toilet for liquid waste only (saving water), and to "regular flush" for solid waste. They work very well.
Unbelievable!! It works down in the recently remodeled basement bathroom. I’m going to tell others to just hold it down for a few seconds so the sewer pump can pump it up and out to the septic.
It also will help to clear the waste lines to emphasize the washing of hands after doing your business.
We’ve got the 6L/3L toilets here in Australia. I’m dubious of the 3L being enough to flush the yellow water down, but the 6L flush for number 2s normally works OK. Living in one of the driest places, it works.
When you said 1.28 gallons I thought that’s not too bad, it’s almost 6L.
But then I realised it’s “freedom gallons” that are less than 4L….OMG! That’s only 4.845 litres.
This made me search a little more, and then I found we’re being pushed down to 4.5L on the full flush with the latest toilets in AU. I won’t be fitting any more new toilets now……
New meaning to the Double Flusher... 🤣
Crappy subject, but we have an old “water saver” toilet on the 1st floor. It just DOES NOT get the big jobs done!
@johntravis5362 I flush multiple times 5,6,or more flushes. Water is what moves that waste paper etc.
Good to know when you gotta go
Love you doc. Thanks so much! I really needed that! All seriousness in my life just dissipated. Lol
And then there's bidets...
TP gone, cut a log if needed, just get a bowl that has a design that properly "jet flushes" the sub-bowl elbow.
The last place on earth to save water is the toilet. Folks flush that toilet as many times as you want. Sometimes I flush 5 or 6 times during one visit. First, flushing helps keep down the smell, flushing allows more water to push the waste down the pipe under the house. Also used Scotts 1000 sheets. That soft paper holds watet and will stop up your can alot.
Remember just getting that waste out of your toilet bowel does not mean your waste is not sitting in the pipe under the house. Flush ,flush and flush some more. You can not over flush.
I was today years old when I learned this! Thanks Doc!
Yep, double flushing is always the way to go if you don't have a water sense toilet.
I am poo happy now thanks
Just messing with you Doc!
I just hold my handle down til the tank empties. Don’t see a reason to “double-flush”.
My toilet does this on its own. I've always called it a double flush.
Another fun fact: Have a couple or more 5 gallon buckets of water ready. haha
The builder told me to hold the handle down if I wanted a full flush back in 2013 when I built this house. All the internals look the same as any other toilet. Does this mean I have one of these sense toilets?
I just hold mine down the first time.
“Bigger problem” he says… 😂😂😂
After 2 cups of coffee things will be moving around n just a little bit of traffic in that area of the powder room area
Doc this was a Shitty Video…lol good advise
Why not just hold it down for 3 seconds every time?
Doc, I was a bit worried about altering the content of your videos 😂. Just kidding-your content is always entertaining!
Iam the .01% who's watching while iam actually taking a dump.....lucky me!!!
Old 8 gal flush was the best...no double flushing.
You have to send this video to President Trump, he is very concerned about how toilets don’t flush properly.
Keep the politics to yourself please. I come here for grass and yard advice not 24/7 news rehtoric
He’s got my vote!
What’s happened to this world when the govt can tell you what size toilet tank you need to have. It’s irrelevant because of number of flushes. Were some of these “many states” California and New York?
