Crust is a grey area as to weather or not its punk. Some yes some no. Amebix was about the occult and less about social issues. I personally like punk simplicity but like metal guitar more and hence like a lot of crust and grind. Most squatters, whom set the standard, don't like punk directly.

It's still punk despite sounding nothing like 1977 style or even the early 80s hardcore waves that came after. Crust is just the continued evolution that came in the 90s and beyond. It incorporated a lot of the iconography of anarcho punk but to say early anarcho punk was in fact Crust is not really true. Ultimately it doesn't matter much. It's all punk to me.
I lived in a squat/punk house called Hellaritty Haus (RIP) on the border of North Oakland and Berkeley with Robert Eggplant from Blatz. He is a legend. Not always easy to deal with but his heart is in the right place and I have a ton of respect for him.
