Wow very useful. I didn't realize you had to upgrade in order.

You don't need to update the iDRAC in batches. We have updated from 2.30 to 2.85 just by uploading the firmimg.d7 file directly to the server and updating. Download the Dell exe's and upack them with 7Zip. Instead the folder will be a payload folder. That's where the d7 file will be. The process is the same for iDRAC 9.

Would this same process also work and allow me to skip to the latest version if I installed the update from a USB? Our iDRAC GUI is inaccessible

Gone from 2.20.20.20 to 2.70.70.70 and then to the latest one.

You don't need to update in batches. Just download the latest firmware from Dell and unpack the exe with 7Zip. A payload folder will be created with the firmware will be contained inside. Log into the iDRAC controller and go to either Update and Rollback on iDRAC 8 or Maintenance/System Update on iDRAC 9. This is where you can upload the d7 or d9 file and perform the update. We've updated from 2.30 to 2.85 that way without a sweat.

Thanks for the tip! Just did this and worked great! Went from 2.50 to 2.86 on an R330.

I worked for me thanks. I would have had to download and install about 20 updates otherwise.

Very good video. I have a VMware and the virtual servers are Windows. Should the exe files work with my server, even if I have a VMware?

Thank you very much, DIYGEEKTEXAS. Could you please provide more detail on how to upgrade the .bin file until in the terminal( CentOS7) if you have a chance. Thanks
