I started off trying the Platform Specific ISO for my R530 to get it from first release 1.0.2 BIOS. It ran for 5 hours and only updated NIC / SATA. I tried manually running Windows based .exe BIOS updates, none of which worked at all, all with cryptic error messages too. I watched this video last night, I followed your info here, made a Linux 7 ISO, and it updated everything! Even the iDRAC is now usable in Chrome not stuck on only IE11. Updated the Lifecycle Controller and the main BIOS all in about 30 minutes. Incredible. Thanks so much for putting this video together!!

This still works (Apr 2nd 2021). Make sure to install Dell EMC Repository Manager, v3.3.1 since it has the last copy of the catalog Dec 2019 19.12.02. EMC v3.3 Only has 19.12.01. Also make sure to disable automatic catalog updates since it will remove 19.12.02. During install I had to disable my internet connection then run EMC, and then go into settings to disable automatic updates, then enable internet. If automatic updates is removing 3.3.1 for you you have to reinstall, EMC v3.3.1 after uninstalling (Linux: "sudo rm /opt/dell/dellemcrepositorymanager/ /var/dell/drm/ /var/.com.zerog.registry.xml -r") since there is no uninstaller.... You can backup the catalogs located in /opt/dell/dellemcrepositorymanager/config like I did once EMC v3.3.1 19.12.01 updates are locked in place. Also this video IS missing the the fact that you must install the EMC Boot ISO plugin (under linux anyways) from the plugin preferences (click update after checking off ISO plugin).

Thank you soooo much for this. I was 75% there before I found your video. You helped me to get the correct catalog selected for my R210 II server. Much appreciated Allen! Subscribing right now!!! I spent all Sunday trying to update the devices and BIOS. I kept searching for "how to update r210 ii bios 2020" but never got anything. I finally search for "dell r710 boot from usb" and changed the search filter on RUclips to pull results from This Year. Your video ended up being the 13th one done and I took a chance on it. Hi Allen, Thank you for the video. Well done. Question: if we have a 12th generation or newer server and don't have a need to create a "trimmed" repository, would the DELL EMC Server Update Utility be just as viable, especially for those who simply wish to use a one-size-fits-all approach? Even though it's approx. 9GB in size, it seems to have everything embedded to do the job for anything you throw at it (as long as it is 12th Gen on up). Your thoughts or experience?

For anyone watching this now. DO NOT UPDATE THE REPOSITORY MANAGER If you do you cannot get the 2019 files. In fact, once you download one set of firmware updates it will update the manager. So you have one shot at downloading or you have to uninstall and delete the Dell folder in program files and program data and then reinstall the manager to get access to 2019 files again.

I usually just go with updating anything I possibly can. However, if you are using a board that has been flashed/updated for a specific purpose, like an HBA used for JBOD instead of RAID. Then you don't want to update those. You can stick to just updating the iDRAC and the BIOS. That will resolve most of any issues you might see. Minor updates to the firmware on say hard drives and such might not be as necessary.

The difference between the current BIOS and the one on the update is too great. You’re gonna need to update just the BIOS manually. Head to the Dell website and grab the first BIOS in the 2.0 section and update to that. If it works. Do it again to something mid 3.0. Keep doing this until you get to a point where the latest BIOS on the ISO works.

I just got a T320 Poweredge server with Enterprise iDRAC7 that has not had any updates to BIOS, LCC or iDRAC since 2013. Do you know if it will cause a problem to install the latest ones? I have read they have to be stepped up and it does not go past Nov 2019. I'd hate to brick this server since I am new to this iDRAC and LCC environment.

    • @AllenSampsell

I recommend starting with something closer to the bios and drivers that it is on right now vs the very latest right away. Maybe something in between them. Then if that is successful go to the latest BIOS.
