I know how you feel about the situation in the Ukraine. I was working on a challenge quilt for my local quilt when news of the war came on and I felt so horrible to be sewing. It was a moment to remember despite all my personal problems I really am so very lucky and to pray and thank God regularly for all that I have.
I have a wooden sewing box that was my moms. She got it as an antique when I was a little girl (maybe 3 or younger) and it was falling apart (literally) at the seams from years of use! It stands on 4 legs and has lots of compartments to store lots of sewing goodies. This year I took it in and had a furniture repair shop take it all apart and re-glue it back together. Now it's as good as new for the next 100 years! I keep my knitting needles, crochet hooks and those types of things in it and store my EPP and sewing supplies in other boxes.
I so LOVE Cath Kidston but her in the U.S. we don't have access to much of her stuff. I do have some of her books though. Love the pink Cath Kidston box!

Thank you for watching Shannon Sounds like you did a great thing by getting your box restored. If I come across someone who could properly restore mine I might do the same. It’s such a shame Cath Kidston don’t sell much worldwide and that they don’t make sewing things now. Take care and thanks again for watching

What a lovely collection of sewing boxes and you are so organised by using them for different projects. I wish my grandmother had had a sewing box but I have inherited her love of embroidery, knitting and crochet most of which she taught me and I have been able to pass on to my daughter. Now if I could just get the grandsons interested.......! 😄

You are a bright spot in our troubled world. It was such a treat to see all your beautiful sewing boxes and hear the little stories behind them. I have my mother's sewing table, more a small wooden box on high legs with a little drawer for all your bits and pieces. She received it on her 21st birthday and she is now 92. I keep in it all my kits that are waiting for my time to complete. Your paper piecing is so beautiful and so feminine. Thank you for sharing your collection with us. ❤

This is such a lovely video! Your sewing box collection is very beautiful. So many treasured memories. Thank you for sharing them with us. I used to have a train case of my grandpa’s. It was light brown, with lots of pockets inside. People used to take them when they traveled by train in the 40s and 50s, before air travel became common. I used to keep a lot of my sewing supplies in it. It wasn’t lovely like your beautiful boxes, but it was precious to me. I lost it somewhere along the way, what with raising kids, a small house so needing to get rid of anything not absolutely required, etc. A shame. But I am 66 now and know life requires adaptation and sometimes traveling very light! And the kids always came first. Thank you so much for your calming, beautiful videos. I also really appreciate your words at the beginning about the tragic state of the world at the moment. They were much appreciated. I wholeheartedly am with you in always thinking the same. 💜

Hello Emma! It's good to see you😊
I love your sewing boxes and I also enjoy collecting them. Mine are more like the basket with handles like you have.
I actually only have two at the moment, one I got on a goood sale and one my daughter gave me a few years ago. I am always longing for more of them when I see them at the fabric store. So many beautiful colors and just something lovely and comforting about them.
I like keeping particular projects in them also , as you said , it's nice to be able to pick it up and take along, wherever you may be going. One of mine currently has parts and pieces of Raggedy Ann dolls I am making for my grand daughters.
As always, you are so kind, calm and encouraging and you forever help me to want to keep sewing! Thanks for helping to make people happy at these times and also before.🌹😊🌹

Emma, during WWII here in the U.S., some of the best movies came out of Hollywood. It was an intentional and purposeful thing they did to keep American spirits up. For Americans here in the U.S., going to the movies became a weekly escape for those who could afford it. The movies were full of romance, comedy, music, and dance. The helped people to remember the good, normal things about life. There were beautiful things to see in a dreary existence. That's what your videos do for me. You use beautiful, traditional fabrics and your voice and music are very calming. You create lovely images and you teach traditional things that are very grounding. I was driving home from town today feeling guilty that instead of focusing on all the tragedy, I was thinking about going home to do some hand stitching. As i was praying to the Lord about this, I remembered that my job is to create a nurturing environment for my family. As the world seems to spin out of control, to use the talents and abilities I have to create a stable and loving environment that is nurturing to my family is critical for their well being. My family is very active in ministry of all kinds especially to young people who also need stability and hope. No one nurtures us in my family. It seems to always fall to me and now to my daughter in law to do it. I sew for necessity, pleasure, and peace of mind. I use scraps of fabric to make things we need but I try to make them lovely so to create that beautiful and nurturing environment. The Lord has blessed me with a daughter in law who loves to cook nurturing foods. I do the same with thread and needle and scraps. These things help us to have very pleasant family meal times and chats that keep us strong in spirit and purpose. We have 7 acres where we grow food and raise small animals for food and pets. When people come here, they feel the peace and nurture each family member lends. I very purposely use Calico fabrics for quilting and crochet to soften the edges of my home and make it feel like a cozy cottage/ farm house. You are now one of my go to channels to help me to do this. In a world where sewing has become almost a rare art form, your channel teaches people how to use this craft to do the things I mentioned above. Maybe the Lord put you here on this channel to be a source of hope, inspiration, and education for those who need this. Food costs are extreme now in the U.S. people will need to know how to scrap together household items. Please keep doing what you are doing. Watching your videos is so enriching to me when I am badly drained. You are a blessing. Please don't feel frivolous in the midst of destruction. If you are worried about that, teach folks how to make necessary items from scraps. You are a precious soul! I am so glad the Lord led me to your channel!

What a wonderful collection Emma! Thank you for sharing them. I had one as a child. It was blue and white plastic wickerwork, on legs, with a hinged lid. I loved that little thing! My parents gave it to me. My mum was a great embroiderer, and my aunts all sewed too, so I was encouraged to learn, and I loved it. Still do! Also, for what it's worth, I'm glad you are continuing to make videos despite the world situation. Sewing and other crafts can help us deal with anxiety and uncertainty, and watching you talk about your love of the craft is always very calming for me and, I'm sure, for others too. Hi Emma, thank you for sharing your sewing box collection. Each one is gorgeous and so very special. I love how you have a different project in each one. I have 2 sewing boxes....a Kirstie Allsopp one in light sage green fabric with a small black and cream printed motif and a Cath Kidston one in bright red oilcloth with white polka dots ( it's the same style as your blue and pink one). Both are chock full of sewing goodies! I have the Cath Kidston storage tins too in various prints. Shame they don't do the haberdashery stuff any more. Can't wait to see your next video. Emma, thank you so much for this sweet video. I truly appreciate having somewhere calm and lovely to set my brain in the midst of all that is going on in the world right now. It was moving to hear your heartfelt feelings on the topics, but I am also so glad and thankful that you decided to make this beautiful and calm video. I'm sure it's been a balm to many others as it has been to me.
I also collect sewing boxes and antique and vintage sewing notions. It was a joy seeing your collection and to hear your thoughts about some of the reasons you value and treasure each one. Some things I have from my mother and great-grandmother, but many others I've collected from the UK, Denmark, and all over the US. I like to imagine the women who would have owned and used the boxes and tools, as we all are in this continuing line from long antiquity of women who have sewn and worked with needle, thread, and fabric. Hugs to you and thank you again for this lovely video.

So glad to see you again. I have thinking of you and wishing for a new video. I am working away on my sewing set from your patterns. I am using the needle case I made while I work on the sewing case. I have one more flower for that then will cut the pieces for it. Then on to assembly of it. I have about half of the hexie parts for the sewing basket done also. My treatments continue and are keeping the cancer in check while slowly reducing the tumors. The doctor says another 18 months or so of treatment to go. So I keep stitching, you tubing and resting as I need. Your sewing boxes are lovely. I have 3 larger ones that don't fit near my chair. One is actually an antique chest with 2 drawers. I could use it again if I got a pile of books and projects off it. I should do that. Mostly I put projects in tote bags that I grab and take with me. I'm sure you are a very busy Mum much of the time. I look forward to your coming videos.

Hi Emma, I love sewing boxes too and am very jealous of your Cath Kidston ones, they really are my thing. I have quite a few but forget what’s in them when I am looking for things so I really need to organise them like yours are. Your vintage family heirlooms are wonderful and it’s difficult to know how to proceed with them as they have been loved by those no longer with us, so we want to preserve what they have touched and loved, but I try to think, especially with regards to my mums things that I have inherited, what would mum say if I did this or that and she would say, go for it. Maybe you could re work the insides and lids with some lovely Liberty fabric as you said, but also use some of the original fabric in needle cases, or scissor pouches etc, I know some older materials don’t stand up to much re working, but even a square, backed, could be used in decoration, just a thought, but I just love everything you have in your collection.

Hello! You are so right, I think it’s the fear of trying to find the right balance between preserving it and restoring it that has stalled me in actually doing anything with it! But my Gran would say the same, she’d say go for it and she would love it to be revitalised I’m sure. Thanks so much 🌸😊

I too, loved your sweet sewing box collection. Thank you for addressing the heartbreaking situation going on in the world. I have obsessed about it so much that I had a huge panic attack yesterday. Thank the lord that his mercies are new everyday. Your videos bring such a sense of calm. Thank you for doing them for us. SO, Emma. Tell us more about your hexi’s crochet pattern in your sewing box. I love the peek I saw. I want to learn to crochet, but I think I love hexi’s even more than the Granny squares. At least, of course I’m with you on paper piecing the hexi’s. I’m making a Grandmorhers garden quilt right now. Maybe a little video on the pattern? Thank you sweet girl! 💜

Hi Shelley, I’m so sorry you’ve been struggling to deal with hearing the news, I am exactly the same and have had many panics over it too. It’s so hard. We just have to keep hope that it will end soon. The crochet hexagons isn’t my pattern,‘it’s from a book, so I can’t do a tutorial. But I will leave a link to a blog post I wrote about it and the details of the book are there. Thank you for watching www.vintagesewingbox.co.uk/blog/crochet-and-the-importance-of-working-on-things-just-for-the-fun-of-it

I would honour it by re varnishing it, to give it a new least of life so the the next person to have it after you can still enjoy it, as for youe great grandmothers box I think that if you line it welll it will not be ruined because you will get pleasure from it. things in my opinion shouldn't be kept like they will loose value. enjoy it

I really need to get a move on with the hexagon basket so I can get ready for the hexagon sewing case. Though maybe I need to work on the things I have right now... and try to not look into the Jane Austen EPP stuff. That was the quilt that got me to look into EPP. Finally came across EPP instructions for the quilt, and I'm hoping that the kit will be available when I am ready for it. Until then, I need to finish my storage box, learn using the lone star kit I got from PaperPieces... and look into how to use my fat 16th Liberty Fabric. Probably some kind of hexagon project (maybe flowers with a solid color center?), but I need to decide on what size.
What a beautiful collection! It is always fun to learn the reason behind different handles. And I really enjoyed looking at your collection. While I would love to have something like that to keep my projects, I really need to go through and organize what I have (maybe purge some of it) and just use things. I feel like my mind jumps from one project to the next, leaving a trail of half thought out and partly started projects all over the place.
Hope you and your family are doing well, and thank you for the much needed mental beak from reality. :)

Oh it sounds you have lots of lovely projects in the works. I am exactly the same, going from one thing to the next and have so many half started projects. But the joy is in the process isn't it, so I try not to be hard on myself over it. I love your idea of flowers with a solid centre to use your liberty 16ths, I think that would work really well. Take care and thank you so much for watching
