The boat leaving the island was sad. It may be their last time. It reminds of when I used to visit my grandmother when she was in her 70's and 80's and each time I'd pull out of gravel drive of our farm onto the road I'd shed a few tears wondering if it could be a last goodbye. Thankfully, in her late 80's my grandmother, in her own way, asked for help and I went to live with her on the farm once again, and cared for her the last three years of her life. I'm so thankful I got to spend those last years with her.
You had the honor not many people are given, caring for a loved one in their last days. I cared for my Mother and it was time that I treasure above anything I have ever done in my life. Thank you for taking care of your Gran! Many blessings to you from Tennessee, USA
@@Cook-hb2nf Thank you for your kind words. My grandmother was a very independent woman, and didn't like asking for help. I knew that. Obviously my cousins who lived 40 minutes away from her didn't. I was living 1000 miles away, but I'd make the journey to see her several times a year to do things like trim the hedges, and bush hog the fields. Them cousins were worthless, but they sure were there ready to snatch and grab when she died. My grandmother was my best friend and I hope she is the one who greets me when I go home.I totally agree with you that time spent caring was the time we treasure most. Not a lot of people out there like us. I always told myself I'd be the one caring for her and knew if I didn't I'd feel like the dirtyest dog alive.
@@Yosef_Morrison I had that same conversation with myself and knew that I would be the one caring for my Momma. My oldest sister was born with special needs and I cared for her as well whenever my Momma passed. It takes special people with a caring heart and soul to do what you and I did. I struggled at times doing it because I was a single parent but I look at it like this, we know that we did our absolute best by our loved ones and they were cared for with the utmost care and had the best quality of life. If it had been your cousins or in my case siblings I would always wonder if she would have gotten the care that she deserved. She will be there waiting for you and y'all will walk into heaven hand in hand ❤️ God bless you!
@@Cook-hb2nf I know we all may have a romanticised version of how heaven will be because the Bible leaves out a world of details about it. For all my Bible learning I try to understand it all to be prepared. What's your story being a gal from Tennessee following a Scottish channel? I'm Scottish on my mom's side so I am drawn to knowing more about the land of my ancestors.
Thank you for your kind comment! You did the right thing for your grandmother ❤️ I have benefitted so much from taking the time to help my parents when they've needed it most. Take care
Thank you so very much for recording and showing this! I love traditional (folk) music since my youth, but this is more than just music. I think the dolphins heard/felt it too ...
You’re not the only one to say that - I think it’s possible they heard the pipes! It was such a special day, I’m so glad I was able to share it. Thanks for watching!
Hamish, thank you to ALL who joined in this gathering for sharing this day with us. I'm reminded of times when my own community gathered to share food and company and song. ...and we, the next elder generation, have allowed those times to slip away. ...we need to revive the practice and make it tradition again. God bless each and every one of you! To the younger generation I would strongly suggest ...don't let this tradition go. Be diligent in keeping this day going. ❤
Absolutely spot on! The pandemic brought a lot of community events to a permanent end because they haven’t started up again and we must fight to keep things going! Thanks so much for watching ☺️
I just happened upon your channel and so enjoyed all your videos. Thank you for sharing the beauty of the land, the sea, the people and that way of life there. I hope your parents can stay on the island as long as possible and then have someone worthy take over for them. I’m writing from Seattle, Washington, USA.
Thank you so much for watching Kathryn! I’m so glad to have been able to share the beauty of the place with others. We all hope very much that we can find someone who wants to live there and create a new chapter in the island’s long history. Sending my best wishes to Seattle!
Watching the drums, bagpipes and singing and dancing moved something in my soul! Thank you for uploading these videos and please continue to do so! Watching from Tennessee, USA many blessings to you all!
Hi Hamish , just found this, I grew up in Wyre. How lucky are we to have grown up in a peedie island in Orkney! I was speaking to Billy this morning, he telt me about the first trip. Hope you’re folk are well Bruce
Great video yet again, am a fan of the human arpeggiator pipe playing so Cliffy nudged it over the edge for me, all the best, Duncan. PS your mum cursing always makes me chuckle.
A wonderful celebration of life on a remote island~~~ Full of heartfelt❤sentimental JOY👏 Thank you for the excellent filming & to all the real actors! I'm a handspinner/ weaver who had 4 sheep once upon a time...to see the flock near the shore eating seaweed sure was a treat.!!! So beautiful they are. Peace & All B Well🙌
Absolutely!! It’s a beautiful reminder of the natural world around us. I’m so glad we protected it so the whale has had a second life ashore! Thanks for watching Sarah ❤️
So glad this turned up in my youtube recommendations. Just remarkable to share in your remarkable lifestyle, how ever vicariously. And I've got a link for your shop in time for Christmas too. Serendipitious.
I bought three gorgeous fleeces and everybody who received one is thrilled with it. They're all being used in office chairs for luxurious comfort at work by my adult children!@@hamishauskerry
The more of these i watch, the more i see all this very sadly coming to an end. I know life doesn't last forever but i see you recording this to preserve those memories forever. It'll be a sad day when that boat leaves for the last time, leaving the island deserted. It's a huge step, but would you ever consider relocating there yourself, for a complete change of lifestyle, and continue your parent's legacy?
Thank you for your message! Yeah it’s very hard for us as a family to accept that things are changing a lot with the health challenges we face. We’re working through it all as best we can and well I have thought about it, but I have a life and career away from the island now that would be hard to leave behind too. Life is never simple! Thanks for watching 👍
I too was raised on an island Hamish. My father was a lighthouse keeper on the northern coast of Queensland, Australia. A profession that is no longer needed. I so hope that your wonderful way of life lives on and never dies like lighthouse keeping did ❤
You all were treated to something very special. I am from Alaska & have seen a lot of wildlife. Some many, many times. But I must say that whenever I've been present when pods of dolphins or whales have played & breached, it takes my breath away. And I know that I was most fortunate to have had that time. Wonderful video with great music, good people, & much laughter. Thank you for sharing it.
Ah thank you so much Meg! And for your donation too - that’s really very kind of you indeed and much appreciated ❤️ Oh my goodness I would love to explore Alaska one day. One of the great beautiful wildernesses left on the planet. Thank you for your support 💪
Having seen the guillemot attending the concert, I wondered if you'd get a seal or 2, but that music charmed the dolphins out of the water. How magical!
I am enjoying this so much. You are extremely fortunate. I lost my mother in 2003 and my father in 2009, and I never did video them. I sure wish I did.
Aw I’m sorry to hear that Tara - that’s been a huge loss to you I’m sure. I’m so lucky that one day I was lying awake at night and thought “next time I go home I’m going to buy a camera and document some of life at home” and that’s where this whole series came from!
The dolphins are Risso's (Grampus griseus) an incredible species not commonly seen from land as they usually inhabit deeper open water. They're as large as Bottlenose dolphins but lack the pronounced beak of many other dolphin species. They are typically a dark grey in colour, but over their life, they lose their dark coloration becoming more white in appearance due to constant scratching of each other with their teeth (known as rake marks). They're a fascinating and spectacular species to see, I had the great pleasure of studying them in the Isle of Man where there is a rare resident inshore population.
Ah that’s awesome Chris! Thanks for commenting. We were lucky enough to see more dolphins later in the summer when we were out in our small boat close to shore. Amazing creatures with a very unique set of behaviours compared to other sea mammals. Thanks for watching 👍
