That brought back good memories. I really enjoyed my pair of snakehead gudgeons that I kept 20 years ago. They were just like puppies, always waiting for me at the top of the tank whenever I entered the room.
Got a soft spot for the snakehead gudgeon as they are around my local area. Use to be common but competition from tilapia and habitat loss have reduced their numbers greatly. Can be aggressive so can hold their own against tilapia but I think the overwhelming numbers of tilapia interferes with their breeding thus reducing their numbers. They can colour up beautifully with an orange / bronze tinge over their bodies. Probably best under subdued lighting. I think they need brackish conditions to breed as the creeks and drains you find them in connect back to saltwater. Also referred to as mud cod because of where they live. Enjoyed the video.
I love my peacock gudgeons! I've always wanted the Empires, but haven't as of yet! And you showed a few I've never even seen, so I'mma have to check their availability in the states! They really are such neat fish! 🤗 Thanks, Blake! Great video as always!
Beware, purple spots in my experience are fish eaters. It doesn't have to be small enough to swallow for them to hunt, they'll try to eat any smaller fish they can get a hold of with their mouths. Many times have I underestimated them and turned the lights on to see a fish 3/4ths of their size lodged in their mouths. I also see this behavior in water cow type sleepers (there are tons of species of all sizes) Snakehead gudgeons in my experience have relatively smaller mouths and seem to be more of an invertabrate specialist. Mine always waits for me at the surface of the tank and only perches on the ground when spooked or sleeping. Obviously the little gudgeons like empires and peacocks won't go for your fish because they are micro predators.
I’ve a snakehead all the way here in America. Awesome fish but yes VERY jumpy, put a towel/top of the bucket type of fish. Mine lives with my small bichirs and he’s about 5-6 inches
Nice man. Those are super cool. The peacocks are probably one of my favorite nano/smallish tank fish. I wish I could find Empires more regularly in the US. Anyway bro...nice addition.
I just got a pair of these guys about a month ago along with a pair of gold bar gudgeons that tirned out to both be males. Really hoping i can get the Giuris margaritacea to breed. Love your vids and these fish!
Don't think you can breed snakehead gudgeons successfully. Yeah you can get them to spawn but the larvae need to develop in the sea/estuary if i recall correctly
G'day Mate can i keep albino corydoras with orenda & ranchu goldfish? Do corydoras become aggressive towards my goldfish? Please help. Your big fan from India brother❤
I've had a pair of Empires in my 55g for about 3 or 4 months. Grown from about 2 inches to 3 1/2 in that time. Haven't seen too much color, if I feed bloodworms the dominant one will get flush around the face and darken up a bit on the body but nothing like any pics I've seen. I can see the color patterns on the fins but they've remained dull. My luck I probably have two females. There is aggression between the two but nothing major, usually just chase away.

ZEN! Yeah I love them they are so quirky
Yeah Zen...I wish I could find Empires locally in the US. They show up every once and a while....but they move quick. Super cool fish.
Super cool video! Currently keeping 6 Western Carp Gudgeons. Super small but in my region have insane colours!
Very cool!

Only last week i was asking my lfs for these in the south east. What timing for this video for me. Hope to see more on them before i bite the bullet
Go for it!

What a interesting video, you really picked some interesting Australian natives that really aren’t that hard to breed 😊

These guys should look great in a few weeks once they settle down in your tank. I used to catch them in nth queensland. They have great colours.
Very jealous of those snakehead gudgeons
Greetings Blake. Great content. Hope this comment helps with the YT algorithm. 😎
Thanks mate! 🥛
G'day Mate
can i keep albino corydoras with orenda & ranchu goldfish? Do corydoras become aggressive towards my goldfish?
Please help.
Your big fan from India brother❤
Hi mate thank you. I wouldnt do it. The oranda might get curious and corydoras might spike them
These remind me of jade goby’s very similar.

We have a purple spotted one and he looks permanently grumpy. He got in a tug of war iver a fresh worm with one of our empires.
🤣 such bulldogs
I have always eaten them. Didn't know things you just said
Can we get an update on the snake head gudgeons
Just moved them in to the 8 foot, they are going great. Might even see them in the background of my video coming friday
aaaagh I need more snakehead gudgeons. I have one female and I love her. They are like 60 bucks for a juvinile in the us sadly
There’s a couple for sale at my local aquarium shop here in Canada but they are $75 each 😰
Wow! Theyre cool but thats pretty steep
Used to catch gudgeons as a kid that were up to 5" long and had red fins?
Where roughly? Could have been juvenile snakeheads?
@@BlakesAquatics I'm in NSW just north of Coffs harbour. We used to catch them as kids up the top of a brackish creek in the reeds.
@@BlakesAquatics I'm nearly keen to get back down there and take a video
@@matman429 thatd be super interesting. That area I reckon either empire gudgeons or striped gudgeons
Man I wish I could get a snakehead but their illegal in the states
These are legal in the US. Not a snakehead. I doubt you would find these in the US...but not the same as a snakehead.
Yes exactly. Snakeheads are illegal in aus too
They are predators , they kill any single fish or shrimp in your aquarium , the are predators hunters , careful with them
