  • UVI Vintage Vault 3 + JP Legacy review
    UVI has been really good at making software synths for a long time now. They came out lately with the Vintage Vault 3 including more presets and more synth models included. The raw numbers are impressive:
    65 UVI instruments
    over 10,000 presets
    500,000+ samples
    The Vintage Vault 3 instruments are compatible with UVI Workstation Rompler synth engine and Falcon. The license can be installed on up to 3 iLok keys or computer hard drives.
    The bundle includes 65 UVI instruments that play sounds from more than 250 devices including more than 110 drum machines.
    The UVI engine is SAMPLE-BASED like a ROMPLER. They captured the sound straight from the original devices to get the grit, nuance and character of the original circuits. This approach has good and bad depending on how what you expect.

    Good quick overview. Really great buy for preset junkies. I learned a lot about using the UVI Workstation from this video. Cheers!

    Good review! I've always loved UVIs approach to making instruments, very quick and easy to get started with and a lot of inspiring presets! I'm rarely interested in having the exact function of the original machine, but rather something that gives it something in the ballpark of the sound of it. So for me it's perfect.
    Just a note though. To say that it "just plays back samples" is an oversimplification. These instruments hybrids and in the case of the analog synth especially, it's only the basic osc sound that is sample based, the rest is algorithmic. Which is the reason why they are so tweakable and playable. But it also means that some of them actually consume quite a lot of CPU. Sometimes as much or even more than the pure algorirhmic counterparts. So I wouldn't necessarily say that its the main benefit of them being sample based. The main benefit the way I see it is that they have managed to capture the vibe of the hardware better than many of the algorithmic ones are able to do. And they can produce them a lot faster than they would have been able to had they sat down to model these things. That's why they are able to crank out a lot more and more obscure synths than what say Arturia can do.
    One drawback I think is that they just reuse a lot of the algorithmic parts for the different models. This makes a lot of these end up sounding very similar to each other. You will begin to recognize that UVI sound across their library.
    But all in all I think its a fantastic package!
    My fav update last year was the 1.5 version of the kroma. Which was already one of my absolute favorites.

    I don't really have much interest in the vintage vault (a friend had been talking to me about it). But just wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge and making the video - I appreciate it. It was nice to follow along.

    Right off the bat the first synth I heard you play sounds really good. I watched Dr. Mix's video of one or two and thought the sound was ho hum. Why does the fidelity here sound so comparatively better and more alive? How did you beat the Youtubinization? Nice work.

      In my videos I try to use the minimum amount of compression and limiter. First, I normalize my tracks, then I use a little compression on each tracks and a little limiter on the master out while aiming for -13Lufs so RUclips does not touch my volume or dynamics.

    I had some UVI stuff many years ago, when they were 1 of the first VST vendors. Just recently I was looking at BeatBox 2 for some drum machine samples and I noticed Vintage Vault. It looks very thorough and extensive, but the full price was $599, which seemed really high in 2022. There are so many other sources for these vintage synth sounds AND you’ve got Arturia offering full classic keyboards at a lower price-point. Do you think UVI with the ROMpler/Samples model is no longer relevant?

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  Год назад

      It all depends on what you want. Do you want synth to recreate the original synthesis ? Then Arturia would be a better choice. Do you want quick access to lots of original sounds with standard synthesis options? Then UVI is a better choice.

    Actually, none of the Jupiter series synths had any onboard effects, just an arpeggiator.

  • @ohheyitskevinc

    By any chance do you know how the MKS-80 Super Jupiter - sorry, I mean Mercury 80 sounds vs the original? As far as I know UVI are the only ones to have emulated that one. Am kind of on the fence with this and Arturia V Collection 8, and I already have a Roland System 8 hardware synth, so have the “Saturn” stuff. The UVI Jupiter collection on its own for $199 and the Arturia collection for the current $399 would be ideal if the MKS clone is any good. Cheers!

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  3 года назад +1

      For what I understand, UVI do not make actual clones. You don’t get the same controls and features. They create great patches on the original device and sample them. They are packaged in the UVI powerful sample playback engine ( including filter, envelopes, LFO and arpeggiator). If you are looking for a clone, the Arturia would be better. If you are not looking to create your own sounds but searching for great sounds easy to manage, then the UVI are a better choice.

      @@Nu-trix thanks! Sorry for the late reply. Happy you had a good one! Mine was.. quiet. Bit the bullet on vintage vault 3 as it was $200 less for a few days. The JP suite is pretty awesome and the MKS-80 Super Jupiter is very close to the original albeit less control than the original with an MPG controller. I do like the Saturn 4... and finally some good old Simmons toms in SMS MTX! Trying to figure out how to get Drumulation sounds into BB anthology, and store all this on an external SSD but for now I’m just enjoying it. Btw there’s more control with the System-8 hardware with the Jupiter 8 plug out, but I do prefer the sound from the UVI software. Just sounds more real. I feel bad as I’m more a hardware person but I guess now I don’t have to worry about batteries, sysex and audio/midi on the old hardware stuff :)

    will they let you choose the install location for the sound libraries to a external hard drive, or does it all have to be on your main HD?

      Nu-Trix The Synth Guy very strange. i bought the Emulation II VST, and it never bothered to ask me where to install the sounds for it. however when installing the UVI Workstation, it did ask me. my external HD wasn’t open as an option though, and said it couldn’t install on it.

    So, after watching this I am left with the impression that the sounds are decent to good and may very well be of interest, but 600€ is a bit much imo, and I probably value omnisphere better in terms of production value. I am not a vintage/analog fanatic but love good sounds, irrelevant of how they are made. Would I consider buying this? Maybe, but there is one thing stopping me that I cannot agree with. Instead of going with a single interface which is efficient and easy to learn, they opted to create an interface for each device, for basically the same controls, but each with a different layout and control location. That is production efficiency madness! I may love a sticker or image, or even a different colour for each "instrument", but to move the controls around and change their "mechanics" is just irritating, unless you are truly a vintage synthesizer drooling madman who gets a kick from watching a make-believe image of gear you wished you had on your screen, instead of quickly getting access to the sounds you need and want in a uniform interface. Best comparison (sorry for mentioning this again but it really is) to how it should have been, is to look at omnisphere. Useability is everything, once you get past the initial drool! :)

      There arent too much parameters, just a few. I don t see the problem. It is a rompler, not a synth.

    • @modamakina
      @modamakina 3 года назад

      @@Emiel1983Schoonoord Never said it is a problem that it's a rompler or that the controls are few. My issues with it is mainly the user interface mashup. Take a look at Nexus 3, it's also a rompler, but it is using a single GUI, making it faster and easier to work with in the studio. To move the filter button (or any other button for that matter) around and also change how it looks and function, depending on which preset you load is just ludicris. That said, if it works for you then more power to to you mate 👍

    Some of the emulations are ok, Mostly there not. There are many Plugins out there for way cheaper that make this bundle redundant, along with the fact that it is a massive download.
    IMHO, Avoid ! Simply not worth the money. - save your money Buy Uhe Diva & Zebra2 - Blows the whole bundle away.

      I actually like the sounds included. I guess it is a matter of taste. Of course it is more for people looking for banks of sounds than for new synth because you don’t get the synthesis capacity of the original synths.
