I feel like you should show the animation, simplicity, and smoothness of creating a split view. That’s what really sets arc’s split view apart from the rest.

I personally feel it is cool. Arc has always had a way of advertising. The browser for humans, the way it should have always been. I guess there should more vertical splits 1 more maybe. And show 3 split atleast once

maybe even show a series of cuts between one split, two split, three splits of vertical social media feeds? could propose the idea of a split view being more than just viewing two websites at once, but also as a dashboard of sites.

Personally I have never used split view for multitasking, I've used it to compose multiple sources of information together. I think that this ad focuses more on what you can do, multitask, and not enough on why you want this, productivity. I think that this can create a far more compelling ad and can cast a wider net for potential new users. If you focus on productivity you can do things like finishing things faster to be with your family, finish a presentation minutes before a meeting, have a content creator read their live stream script while their viewers are leaving comments for them to read, etc.

THIS! As someone who sometimes struggles to focus, whenever I need to go down the rabbit hole of our Notion or, god forbid, the internet to look something up for, idk, a prd or a strategy document, I just get side tracked. It helps me focus, it allows me to *not* do multiple things at once.

I totally thought this was going to be about PiP not split view. I use PiP for multi tasking, whereas split view is for doing a single task that requires more than one thing to look at at a time. I'd also like to have you show how well crafted the interactions around split view are. My main comparator in that space is the clunky and infuriating split view on ipad. The bad experience on iPad actually made me skeptical about Arc split view until I tried it.

  • @nte5

It’s not really about doing two things at once, it’s just having similar tabs side by side. It’s like Ketchup and Mustard, they are better with each other. You still have to be focused on one tab at a time.

    • @HansyProductions

Agreed. I think the multitasking bit was not necessary, and instead maybe focus on what utility it brings. For example, having a reference from another site up (dictionary?), or comparing two different sites for design purposes (old vs new designs?)

I think split view is not about multitasking, but more about connecting or comparing information. Like looking for businesses on one side and then seeing where they are on maps on the other side. Or when u want to translate multiple litttle things. It's very convenient to have the translator on the one side and the content on the other
At least that's how I use it ❤

I spent 35 years in broadcasting, and made at least hundreds of ads. I think it all goes by far too quickly, and a new user of Arc is going to have not clue what is going on. Sorry to be so direct, but yes, too cute. 🙂 How about trying a much simpler approach that just shows a simple example of split view in what you know is a very common use case? Such as getting info from one website and pasting it into another one. Happy to collaborate with you on this.

It's cool, but the multitasking bit seems irrelevant honestly. I'm not using Split view to multitask, i'm using it to speed up my current task. swapping between tabs is slower, and causes me to lose focus. putting something in split view just lets me complete my task faster. the 3 or 4 splits are cool, but I've only used them when plugged into my ultrawide. each tab is too thin otherwise.

  • @biggeststeppa1

I see where it's going, but it does imply Arc is the first ever platform to introduce multitasking. I think a better line to take would be appealing to people who already use multiple windows on their devices and kind of going 'oh you can do that in this browser too, and you don't need multiple instances of the same app running at the same time'.

    A few things:
    1) I like split with arc because the tabs sync in one place where I can change the url and hit the back button etc
    2) Yes people who use arc use this to reference many sites at once, but show the different types of people. For me I am a student with notion open on one window and an article on another. Think about other specialized cases for who would use this feature.
    3) the animation of using the features are too fast. Make them slower; the smoothness and UX of arc’s split tabs are why I love them

I feel the ad is well paced, and the reveal works really well. I would maybe make the studies part a bit shorter and use that extra time to show a tiny bit more of the split view feature, maybe a rapid fire of the few things you havent shown and cut to "A browser that can keep up with you" because I feel that cut is a bit sudden. It happens right when I'm still appreciating what's happening, and right after you start showing me variations of the feature so I expect a bit more.

Overall, it's good, but if I had to mention it, I wish it had been recorded with a professional voice actor's exaggerated voice when mentioning the research content in the first part, deliberately using a very serious and weighty tone to create the feeling that a twist is coming later.

My first reaction is "well why dont i just open two windows side by side?" as a Windows user this is easy to do neatly. I personally understand the philosophy of having the split view WITHIN a Tab (even though I myself used it in Edge and don't prefer it) so I think you need to tell people why your philosphy of split view is more useful than two windows side by side. Good job on the ad btw! It's pretty well made for an in progress ad.

The concept is cool. I'd personally start rolling some credits and then show a short clip (must be like badly filmed or something) just showing a user trying to split 3 tabs or do a vertical split - by then people will think the split view is just a 2 window horizontal split, and you show them everything's possible. Like those Avengers movies post-credits clips or something. I think that'd be cool.

I think space view grouping is a great idea to market. Not just displaying a bunch of random, separate windows side-by-side, bur related ones
    In more detail:
Every modern OS can do split views, even on mobile. But it's the grouping that matters a lot - slack + coding environment = work view,
Instagram + fashion website + Amazon = shopping view
    Etc.
You can't manage those right now easily natively in browsers right now, not with a split views.

Maybe show more clips of dragging tabs in and out of the split view instead of just the hard cuts. I really like the ad!!
I would test the following variants:
    - test the ad as it is
    - test a version, where the first part is shorter and you show arc earlier
    - maybe go in and create an ad which is built like the first minute of the barbie movie, which is an hommage to another movie itself (watch the beginning of barbie and you'll probably know why i suggested it)
    - make another video where you show all the ways you can create a split view and the narrator and the text go more in a direction like "you're a multitasker? and you're tired of resizing different browser windows...? so were we." (text probably need some work haha but its just the idea)
    - and from there you could again built variants and even static picture ads, with simple statements like "multitasking has never been so smooth" if you need some statics aswell.
i love arc and i'd be super happy if any of my ideas helped you.
feel free to contact me, for a short chit chat on these topics, if you want to talk!!

Keeping in mind the criterias at the buttom. If I think about a "series" of ads to showcase features, I think consistency and ability to replicate Arc's signature to future ads.
For example, peak moment of either dragging a tab and dropping it into split-view and exageration of going up to 4 tabs, or the magic shortcut 'shift + control + equals sign'.
I'd definitely try to get to the feature in the first 3 seconds, with a total of 15s. Unless your storytelling and execuation is so good that you're willing to bet on +30s ads. Worth mentioning that some features aren't worth showing alone.
Great recent example would be: "The New York Times | More of life brought to life"
    //
Objective: convince people to change browsers
    Feature: split-view
    Comment user feedback:
    - Productivity
    - Clear UX/UI (before/after arc)
    - Multitasking (up to 4 sites/ picture-in-picture)

No reason to get pedantic about it and deliberative. Hell, arc has been my daily driver for 9 months and this reminded me of split view powers. In general our computing lives is so much about living in the browser that this idea of showing the power of arc in these quick vignettes on each feature is a great idea. Nice work!

Regarding the ad: I didn't like it, because it just basically denies research. What's the advantage then? What makes it possible to just simply ignore all research about it? I don't think productivity is the way to go here. I think a more emotional approach from the get go instead of starting with a rational one would work best. Hey Josh. The trailer is well edited, snappy, etc and works great as a trailer.
However, I think conceptually it may need to be reworked. Most people use the split view not for multitasking but to have multiple sources/concerns open when doing the same task. Like looking at documentation while developing for example.
One way to show this may be to start the trailer off with someone trying to work on a task like this using a traditional browser but being frustrated with losing tabs/windows and going back and forth between them. Then show how Arc is better.
    Love this new format btw!

I'm on team productivity and focus which it looks like has been mentioned by others. My uses of split view is always centered on a singular focus (better for my neuro spicy brain) Banking & QB. Notes & course work. My other love is saving the split view for future use. In my “atomic habits” mindset this is one of those small hacks that compounds over time. These are the things that would pull me in.
That said I do love the concept from the beginning. I enjoy a setup that I'm not entirely sure where it is going but keeps me interested.
My fav fav part is this video is here and you are asking for feedback. That makes this ad, as is, incredibly effective. When you say "have you tried arc?" i feel like there needs to be something there that's more interesting than a screen grab of a mouse clicking an icon on the dock. I like the mouse clicking on it, but what if there was more intentional design to "introduce" the audience to the fact that HEY, this is an ad for a browser, and its BEAUTIFUL. This would take the attention off of it being mac exclusive, that is, if you're planning on shipping windows end of year. Use colors. Use your assets to create transitions and animations. Create a design language that transcends the browser and into the product language as a whole. Just a couple of brainstorming thoughts :) Keep it up!

Great video! I think it may be less effective to people who don't know what Arc is. Split view specifically is very easy to understand as soon as you see it. So hiding it for 15s probably is a mistake if the goal is to get new people to use Arc.
Here's the storyboard I'd go with:

    This is split view
They say people can't do two things at once.
    [show building splits to 4-wide]

To that we say have you tried Arc.
[same animation of lots of different use cases of split view] - these use cases should be more thought out than the current ones. They need to be more instantly intuitive. mmmmm
    *music*
[5s speed run of arcs other features]

    [End on logo]
*Tagline * A browser that can keep up with you

Not sure the multitasking is a good point. Because it is not a user problem, it's a fact - scientifically proved fact.
Would be much better to make a setup about the struggle of switching between the tabs - this is the real problem users have. You could think of some specific cases when it's a pain - too many tabs, hard to find the right one to paste something from another tab, or whatsoever.
Also I think showing more split screen options make more sense. That way you could highlight the flexibility and utility this feature provides.

I love the idea, but I think it misses the main use of split view (for me), and that's having all the information I need on screen easily. It's so much easier working with a split view (especially on today's wide-screen monitors) than it is switching tabs or trying to open and put various windows side by side, and then, on top of that, these split views can be pinned. That means that I get better overviews of data, I can more easily take multiple sources of data and copy content into a window. So useful! Love the style of the ad, though. Do be a little cheeky, please!

Adding my voice to the chorus of people saying I never use split view for multitasking, it's for a single task with multiple sources, e.g. article in one tab and notes in another, reference in one tab and my design in another. It solves the problem of having to switch back and forth between tabs for one task.
Love the style of the video though, it does feel exciting when it shows off split view.

I think the main benefit of split views is you can keep things you usually use together... together

I think tone is great and opening with the multitasking research and then selling you product as the solution works well. I agree with other commenters about maybe doing a transition from 2-3 splits and showing vertical more using the same transition you do when showing multiple 2 horizontal splits.
    Love Arc ❤

I think it would be really cool if the discussion of the papers happened with the subtle use of split view so that the viewer only relay notices it when you start talking about it. As and example, the brain can be one side of the split view and the paper itself can be the other, and the edit is just a crop of whichever thing is being discussed right then.

I think it's quick, interesting, and engaging so that's effective for an ad. I hear you saying not to get too cute with it, but also don't get lost trying to capture every detail and option in the feature. I like how it quickly flashes through some pretty normal use cases.
In the release notes Easel it asked how I talk about Arc and well, I try to talk about it but no one really hears anything that makes them quickly switch their default browser. THEN at some later point I'll end up doing a screen share and they ask "whoa what browser are you using" noticing my colorful theme, or playing some DND with friends over Zoom and they see how I have a dual (or triple) vertical split to manage my character, campaign, and video chat and they instantly switch ;)
So yeah, at the heart of it, it's the old "show don't tell" approach. I think this ad is doing that.

I think a cooler ad would be someone studying then they need to read and take notes, so they have this lightbulb moment of using split view then another of someone working maybe they get a slack call and their boss asks for x but they were sitting in the middle of something else so they open split view do their work and close it and it was like what they were originally doing never stopped

I think a good question to ask is: who is the next group to try a new browser. Is it people who already don't use safari? Or stock Safari users? My feeling on this--but I could be totally wrong--is that this won't be enough to entice a stock browser user. If they've used split screen it's because they use some wonky extension, so I think the best thing to pull them from their alternate browser of choice is to not just show that split screen EXISTS, but to also show the tab getting physically dragged to the center to show how mind-numbingly easy it is to go split screen. The big takeaway becomes: "yeah you've been trying to multi-task...and with Arc you really can!"

Before using Arc, I was happy to just drag windows side by side. The moment that I was sold on split view was the moment I realized that I could bookmark a split to get back to it at any time in a single click. I dont know how to communicate that in a short ad, but if you could it would convert people like me.

If you end up sticking with this direction:
    In 1st half:
Make it more concise and mix in b-roll of humans (maybe actively frustrated people?) to complement the analytical research with clips that will hit on a more emotional/relatable level
    In 2nd half:
Slow it down and show a clear and useful interactions between splits (dragging and dropping from GPT to a Google doc, watching a video and taking notes, etc). Right now each example, while good, comes and goes too fast to fully digest. Show fewer that REALLY show of how useful it is and let the viewer connect the dots on other use cases
I know its marketing and we can be loose w/ definition, but I worry theres 2 definitions of "multitasking" being used here and that dissonance might not set well with detail-oriented people. Love you guys hope this helps.
Also, "2x faster, 4x more enjoyable" just randomly came to me as a phrase you could throw in.

For me the main arc feature i use most of the time are the pinned tabs. Having all those different gitlab repos pinned is so useful. Especially with the ability to go back to the original pinned URL at any time. That way I can have the sprint board pinned, can explore tickets and go back to the board with one click.

First of all, awesome ad!! It was fun and eye-catching
I took some time to think about it, and I think it would be cool if you showed the 3-split, as well as maybe the view with the sidebar hidden.
It was moderately paced, the first time I saw it I missed that the tabs in each split were relevant to one another, I’d maybe make it more obvious (but I get that the beat is fast, so it might take some messing around) maybe an action like dragging an image from one to the other or something of that sort could work
Lastly, I just wanna say I love the work guys are doing! Are you hiring for any creative or marketing roles right now?

I absolutely LOVE how - when the music kicks-in - it makes me start nodding along, triggering this intrincic: hell yeah this is nice. At the same time: It also completely moves my attention away from anything 'content wise' and just creates an awe for the awesomeness of the video itself instead of the split view. I guess that's a net positive / I like it a lot.

Great video - In my opinion the biggest pull is the spaces feature. Showing that off in different contexts like waking up going to work and being in your work space and checking your emails. Then going home and switching to your personal space with totally different logged in details on the same websites (gmail etc.) you can sell this in so many ways: To anyone with multiple jobs or businesses or someone maybe in college and a job or just college. There are so many contexts and twists on this and I'm sure there's a great story to tell here.

I'd also add some frames of you resizing the split view (adjusting the balance/space given to each screen in the split view.) The song has a pretty strong beat so could sync it with that

Great to see you soliciting feedback this way! That said, I dont think this is a good ad. Because the message implies that Split View allows you to multitask. But for me, Split View does the opposite, it allows me to prevent multitasking. When I need 2 screens for 1 single task I'm on, instead of having to continually switch screens (an activity thats strongly associated with multitasking and distractions for me), I can now better focus on that single task by having everything I need on a single screen.
So for me, the ad tried to give me the exact opposite view. Also, I dont want to multitask, multitasking is bad and pretty objective science at this point that we suck at it. Split View helps me not doing that, but the ad tries to convince me of the opposite.

I feel like you could make it more captivating:
    a. cut the intro part (studies say...) short and start showing more visuals of the product sooner
    b. animate the text slightly
    c. The voiceover also sounds a bit muted
Love the music choice though, it's a banger.

In tro is great. Should try highlight how easy it is to drag and drop a tab in to set up split view a bit more in the video. At same time how easy it is to disable split view and go back to full view.

So cool to see you guys asking for feedback over here!
I think the idea is good, but I'm not sure the setup is giving the right impression. For example, one message that I got is: "Studies says X, but Arc does not care and want to prove science wrong!". This is totally not the case with Arc!
For me, Split View allows me to be more focused. It prevents me from multi-tasking, as I can have more context in one view. So yes, we can't multi-task. But Arc will help you with that, by allowing us to be even more focused so you don't need to switch-context that often.
My suggestion is to change the first part of the ad, and keep everything after the "Have you tried Arc?". Not sure what could be the setup tho :(

The “have you tried arc” with the click felt off beat from the rest of the ad, but I like the idea of having a lengthy setup to propose that Arc really is something special when it comes to Split View worked really well IMO. This felt like an Arc video and that made me (as an early adopter and slight fanboy) feel excited like I could share this with a friend.

I agree with everyone saying that I usually use split view to be able to look at two things at once for the main task I'm working on. I say lean into the the cheekyness overall. Definitely show as many splits as you can!

I find Arc split view refined but not a game changer, you can reach the same with two tabs in any other browser-but what I find special about Arc is this exact refinement & rethinking of features.
💥My main reason for changing to Arc was the productivity side and clean look without losing any functionality, which provides a lot of focus. I manage projects with a lot of tabs open over long periods and I can get back anytime, even in 2-3 months without losing anything. And in all this time, Arc is cleaning temp tabs that I don't need-this lightens the load a lot. Thanks and keep up the good work

One way I use split view is to have my notes (Arc notes) on the right while doing something else on the left. Either for taking note, or copy-pasting from the notes to the other view.

This so so fun!! I thinks it's a great as. Personally, if I don’t know what the ad is about or the ad is not talking about a problem I have - connecting with me on more of an emotional level - Then I check out.
I also don't know if split view is used for multitasking. I use it more as a way to give my video meeting and notes up, or a video and notes or to compare two spreadsheets.
To summariz, split view is amazing, but not often used for multitasking. I think the beginning of the ad could touch on the problem people have with multiple tabs and windows all over their desktops and the chaos that causes. I think showing that chaos and how arc simplifies peoples desktop, browser, and life would be a better approach!
Thanks for sharing and having the humility to ask so many people for feedback!

I really like it! Maybe you could also include an example where one of the split screen is used for note taking using the other side as reference, or using an AI tool to write an email or something on one side and the other view has gmail in it.

Someone else hinted at the same thing, but I don't use split view for what I'd call multi-tasking, but rather cases where I need to compare data between two pages; almost always in a business context. I know that's less sexy sounding, but it's much nicer than opening a different window. It might be good to show >2 or just the fact that they can be easily added/closed/resized. PIP is another multitasking example though, having a video play and moveable is great. On an unrelated note I remember one of the first browsers, mosaic or netscape, had a multi view also but they scrapped it. Times have changed though.

    10 sec video is good.
    Scene 1:
    A shared sheet or something.
    Scene 2:
Drag to open another page in Split View, copy a value from it, and paste it on the old page.
    Scene 3:
    The Arc logo.
That’s it. No music, just clicking sounds. It’s simple and convenient like that, you don’t even have to explain.

I think you should show as many splits as you can. It doesn't really matter if most people will use it with 2. It's more of a wow factor and lets people see the possible capabilities, and they'll decide if it's for them.
