We all are doin' that.
Bruh , once you impress a cat, impressing the girls/boys is easy.
Such a look
It takes time to set priorities straight
"I put out a finger, he decides how he wants to be pet, and now we're friends."
Does this method work on humans?
@LTNetjak You gave him a finger and he gave you the whole fist.
LTNetjak I am picturing that in my head and absolutely cracking up! After all there’s no more hugs or handshakes anymore so we’re gonna need a new greeting!
It’ll work for me
Edit: typo
Ask Donald Trump
No. Sadly you give a human a finger and they want the whole hand ✋
"It's about asking permission." Those four words are the key to making friends with the kittehs. Kudos! 👍
More like purrmisssion
More like purrmisssion ;)
Ye
Kenjiro5775 That phrase also applies to other animals, like dogs and especially humans, too.
And the ladies
It’s so nice seeing you reinforce something that I already instinctually knew about cats - introducing yourself and saying hi and inviting them to be friends. Cats communicate so much in their body language and behaviours so I find it sad when people ignore that and then get upset when the cat doesn’t want to be around them or be touched in a certain way, and then the person patting them things the cat is unreasonable.
It's actually kind of surprising how so few people think to actually ask an animal's permission to touch them. They skip past the introductions and just expect the animal to feel graced by their touch alone or something. It reminds me of all the stories I've heard from pregnant women about how they hate how people suddenly think they can just go up to them and touch them, LOL.
Exactly!
Indeed so, or like the folks of European descent who think it's purrfectly cool to touch the hair of an African-American with whom they are at most marginally acquainted: in short, incredibly presumptuous, and downright rude and dismissive of the other being's dignity. What gives, people? You say you "love kitties,"and then you treat a sensitive, living cat as if s/he were a stuffed toy. Especially a cat, whose dignity and sense of self are immensely powerful things, should be treated no less presumptuously than one would treat another human; I recall Jackson's teachings re the three-part kitteh "hello," used when meeting a cat for the first time, and to this day can report that I have never upset a kitteh when I have used that simple, respectful greeting, but have made many feline friends once they could tell by my approach that I meant them no harm and could be trusted. If one always lets the kitteh lead the encounter, showing where s/he wishes to be touched (if at all), one will most likely be rewarded by the trust and friendship of said kitteh, which is no small thing.
Even more stupid is they go in all aggressive and when the cat swats or scratches or hisses then they want to kill it. Never taking responsibility for getting in their space.
We take away animal's autonomy in so many ways. We need to stop.
@@venus_envy Hear, hear, friend -- all good to you and to all those you care about, human, feline or otherwise.
The Michaelangalo thing is something I already learnt from my first cat. I always start like that with her everyday, she loves me being respectful with her and it definitely works with 90% of the cats I have had the pleasure of meeting while volunteering.
I've trained my cat so that when I go "are you a pretty boy" he rolls over and displays his chin so he can have it tickled
🤗😃
Kittens can be trained, for sure.
My 34wks old adopted Henry knows to jump on top of his scratch post to have his harness put on and get his treats there.
He also knows when we are going to play with throwing balls up/down stairs. 🤗
Wow I need to try that one. How old ıs your cat.? What age dıd you start to traın hım? Thanks
Aromanthia - has it occurred to you that puss may have trained you to tickle their chin when they roll over?
The line you use may just indicate to puss that you're up for it and your aura is non-threatening.
I'm so in tune with my feline now that I just have to say an instruction for her to obey, albeit sometimes with a grumpy meow. I'd be surprised if she understands English, but she reads me easily.
heehee same with mine when I say "who wants a bewwy wubb???" He immediately lies on his back - so cuteee
I volunteer at a shelter and this one cat will go all cuddly whenever I say "who's a handsome boy!"- he's quite a vain little guy lol
Can I tell you how many times I hear: "my cat NEVER lets anyone touch them!" I just sit there calmly and let the cat come to me. Makes me wonder how many people just come straight at them. I work with rescues and I always send new cat owners to your channel for re-education!
Loved hosting you, Jackson! We need more cat advocates like you ❤️.

“In Mother Russia You Do Not Pet The Cat The Cat Pets YOU!!!”
I bet the word has worn off your shift key.
Mother Russia aout of all nations has the most felines per human capita. Russians love their cats
Huh, I always do the Michelangelo, never thought of calling it that though.
I do that with all animals I want to pet. From mice to dogs.
It's the polite thing to do.
Whenever I try that with my cat she just licks it. No idea why
That Is my hello to my cat. And he bumps his nose on my fingertip its too cute 😻

I love catcafes. Cats come to you and chill around and I love it.
Omg, you just made my cat's day! I never would've rubbed her ear like that. She loves it! ❣️
Same. I'm doing it to my cats now. They love it. It IS magic
One of my cats hates it.
When my cats are sitting on my chest for some lovin', I will gently rub both ears like that. Gets me lots of purrs! ❤🐾
Got to go try it where’s one of my cats
The headbutt is the ultimate sign of trust and it's my favorite thing to do with my boy. 😊
Jackson, on the ear tip thing you are spot-on. Just like when we press the webbing in between our thumb and forefinger on cats when you press on their ear tips like that it's been scientifically shown to release endorphins in the brain. One of my favorite things to do to my kitties! I have found it works especially well when they are in stressful situations, like at the vet, to help calm them down.
Interesting! Thanks.
I actually didn't know people liked having the webbing between their thumb and forefinger to be pressed.. Interesting. Is it a massage type thing?
For dogs it's the upper chest. Instant relaxation. They can fall asleep sitting up this way
Keep clothes pins around wherever you go.
I love my cat. Everytime I come home from work she comes up to my leg wanting picked up. She meows puts her front paws on my leg stands on her back ones. And I pick her up every day and she cuddles. She loves me to carry her around the house and outside etc.. she follows me everywhere too! Always lays by me at night on the bed. Shes my diabetic alert cat too. Has saved my life many times from low blood sugar levels. She is my mini me for sure. Love my orange and white tabby cat! And oh boy she loves being petted. Think mine might be part human and dog. Hmmm. Ha ha ha ha . 😊🤣🤣
My cat's favorite spots are under her chin and the top of her head. If I pet her there she just melts.
@EC C Cats are the best. I adore my girl. We just spent 10 minutes slow blinking at each other. She's the best.
Yep exactly the same for me
My cat likes it when I rub her scruff
She doesn't melt. After all cats are liquid 100% of the time.
@@grandbean9031 Ha. My girl is more of a pretzel. She doesn't do containers and boxes, but she does climb up things and then twist herself into impossible positions that look super uncomfortable.
Brilliant! When you've had cats for years you learn but for ppl starting out in cat society this is priceless xx
asking permission doesn't just apply to the first meeting, either! i volunteer at a cat shelter, and i'll still greet cats i've known and spent lots of time with for several months. heck, i greet my own cat pretty often! she doesn't even need it, she's a chill little ragdoll who will put up with anything. it just feels right. it's always good to get permission from the kitty you want to pet. :)

That's right folks. Always ask permission first. It's part of the lesser known, "Me(ow), Too" movement.
It's, "you need (or knead) their "PurrMission"".
With my kitty, it's on his spine near the tail (butt). Then, it's the chin, under neck, ears and back of the neck.
A lot of kitties love rubs on their rump! 😸❤️
Someone once told me they gets horny if u rub their “spine” but i have nooo idea if its true haha
@@rebekkamoe36 maybe not in the sense that humans do, but the base of the tail is an erogenous zone. :)
Aaawww the little black panther is such a sweetheart ❤🐈
I'm glad iv been petting kitties the correct way. I always pet very soft also. No wonder most cats like me
Instead of Butthole I now refer to the Kitties rear end as "The Pencil Sharpner" LOL
❤️ So true!! Listen to your cat. My former feral cat had ear infections her whole life and refused to get petted by anyone until I used my head insted of hands to approach her. She started pushing against my head and flopped on her back 😊. Turns out she loves bellyrubs 😂 I love her so much ❤️
There should be a special place in Heaven for those who rescue animals.
I also adopted a former feral cat who loves belly rubs! She is basically attached to my hip now, she's so sweet.
I tried the "handshakes" like in the video and learn that none of the cats want me to pet them
Emotional damage
One of my cats is a little high-strung and has to be in the right mood for pets, and he must conduct a thorough sniff test of my face and hands first.
Thank you for remaining so passionate about cats. They are lucky to have such a wonderful advocate for their well-being.
Lol...butthole
My cat loves the ears rubbed, i have yet to meet a cat that doesn't enjoy it
That's what I was thinking. Doesn't everyone run kitty that way? I guess not.
Every kitty I've made friends with loves to get ear scratchies, they always grind their little baldy patch in front of the ear against my knuckle 😂
One of My cat is the exact opposite of this video, loves over the head full body pets and hates his ears being touched

Guess he/she's the oddball.
@@mothercereal4438 you can say that again, i got a puppy 3 weeks ago today i found him lying on his back fully stretched out letting the puppy lick his tummy, my other cat wont even go near the puppy...just wants his food
I volunteer at this very cat cafe and I was so excited to see Doc, he’s the only cat in the video who is still there and not yet adopted. He has made a lot of progress towards being able to trust humans, but he still seems to be easily overwhelmed. I know he has a sweet loving goofy personality inside him, but it’s not really showcased when he’s so preoccupied with hissing at any hand that comes near him and running away to take refuge in his box. I firmly believe that he would be happier and more likely to let his relaxed positive aspects of his personality shine if he were in a home with just a few people, no small kids, no dogs and maybe just one or a few other cats, to match his energy. If anyone out there lives in LA and might be interested or knows someone who might be, please come by the cat cafe to meet Doc and talk with staff about adoption. Thanks Jackson, amazing video as always! :)
After 18 years I just greet my cat with a hug and a kiss.
As a first cat owner these are great tips. I have 2 dogs and my first mistake I learned with my new kitten was to try to pet it as a dog. My kitten gets mad when I do belly rubs!!!! But he loves head touches so everything makes sense.
Two of my cats love to be rubbed on the ears like that! :o Yay! They really love me!
Mine love it too!
No! You love them. You're just serving them.. The reality is harsh...
I like comparing offering then a sniff to humans shaking hands.
I never knew about the ear thing! I might have to leave work early to see if my Bandit will like it. :)
Do update when you try it
Yes tell how it went
Did Bandit like it? I tried it with my cat and he did not approve lol
Unfortunately, Bandit was not a fan. At all. Oh well.
Does bandit like tummy rubbies?
My cat loves the soft touch. The softer the touch and slow touch the more he relaxes

You should read /listen to his book, total cat Mojo, or something Mojo. It's full of so much info even cat experts wouldn't know! It's fantastic. And it never gets old. I have it on audible and I've listened 3 times already ❤️👌💯🤟
YES, I've always noticed the ear trick!! They LOVE it!! 😍
I have two cats. One loves being rubbed on his belly and will melt if you pet him anywhere. My other cat, I have to do the Michelangelo finger EVERY single time I approach him. 😂
A stray cat kept following me today and suddenly shrugged his tiny head against my leg. It let me pet him playfully. It has since then become my sole mission to become a cat owner. Wish me luck
Absolutely loving all the cats! My cats love cheek rubs indeed. Everyone should adopt a cat and smurgle / make biscuits with the cats 😸
I just know you 24 hours ! Because a friend told me about your youtube video and i LOVE you ! You are so talented talking about cat ! It helped me already deal with a scared new cat thankyou youre amazing ❤❤❤

GREAT LESSON! "It's about asking for permission" -- that is totally the key. I never really knew why "mean" cats gravitated to me ... this is why!
I'm definitely looking forward to this episode lmao
This literally is like unlocking a hidden level in your cat. I thought my cats where obsessed with me before but now it is on a whole never level . They are being ridiculously cute and loving . I just had to come back and comment . Thank you for the info!
I am so freaking excited that I found your channel! I remember when I was like 9, I'd always watch your My Cat From Hell series on animal planet. You inspired me to want to adopt cats, and now 8 years later I am the proud owner of two beautiful cats!

Ever since I've watched this video I've been using "the michelangelo" and it's been working like a charm. It has let me become friends with many many beautiful cats. It also helped me overcome my fear of touching animals. Thanks Jackson.
PS: Told my friend who is also crazy about cats about this technique and she loved it too lol
I am a dog owner. Was, but I like to think I still am.
There is this neighbourhood cat that hangs around our house and comes every morning. I’ve NEVER pet a cat before and I only know how to pet a dog. I get so confused when they bump their head on my hand or rubs their head on my finger. This helps A LOT.
This tip comes at the perfect time, my cat bit my face yesterday. I think I got overly close to her face as I was petting her in bed. Thanks, Jackson!
Cats are really very easy to "read." Thank you, Jackson, for explaining their "language" to those who don't know how to read it yet. My can did not like her back touched at all when I first got her; maybe a previous bad experience. I patiently touched a little more and a little more over the first few months she was with me until she now allows a full body pet, which I limit to the length of time she finds acceptable. Beside the head pets and scratches, she loves (also time limited) a good belly rub. The body language and ears and tail all will guide a person to exactly what his or her highness accepts. I love your tutorials!
Jackson just... gets it!!! The things he says about interacting with cats is so YES and second nature to me but I find it so hard to articulate to others who aren’t used to cats or WORSE!! Treat them like dogs!!! Jackson is the absolute god of catdom 😻
god that black cat is such a precious angel
As a cat I approve of this. You are a good human, please keep up your work on training normie humans.
i need to go to this café soon. i love cats so much that my allergies don’t stop me from petting them any chance i get
Thank you Jackson! I have always respected my cats’ space, to the point that I never even picked them up unless they showed an interest in being held that way. My daughter says I should have forced them to get used to it from a young age, but I can’t do it - they are little fluffy people who deserve the love and respect you can show them by letting them set the parameters of your interactions.
We are bigger and louder, the least we can do is let them decide if we are allowed to pet them.
I'm working on socializing a litter of feral kittens that a cat had and left on my porch. They're now about 10 weeks old, and I'm trying to walk that line between "forcing" them and respecting their boundaries. We've gotten to where they can be petted, picked up, etc. to the extent that's necessary to be safe for vet visits and things like that. Now I'm trying to work on backing off some of that mandatory touching and just offering them treats when they come by. None of them enjoy being petted yet, though. I do think there is some forcing you have to do when it comes to feral kittens because they have to be somewhat socialized, and since humans are scary to them, they aren't going to just magically get out of their own comfort zone.
@@kellyriddell5014 that’s such hard work! Many years ago we had a cat have her babies in our wood stack. The sweetest little dark grey tabbies with blue eyes, spitting and hissing at us. We were able to make them friendly over time, but we had to because mamma disappeared and the only other result would have been unthinkable. We had to bring them indoors to get them used us, so yes, you’re right of course, sometimes it is necessary to force their boundaries a little.
Glad to hear that those two cats at the end got adopted. Hope they have long, happy lives with their new families.
I kinda knew this instinctively but I also got it confirmed and learned from you Galaxy
I figured this out with a feral I was trying to "turn". I realized, you need the allow the cat to make their own moves with you on their terms. It helps develop their trust for you, which can take quite awhile. After working with her for months, she felt comfortable to come inside and now lives with me, and I couldn't ask for a better friend!
One of my boyos is basically a dog.
He follows me everywhere.
Will only take steps when I do,like,he'll wait for me before moving foward
Also when he hears a person,he'll meow continuously like a dog would bark
Also he LOVES full body backs
Even lets me rub his belly
One of my cats is a dog. He likes belly rubs, purrs like an airoplane, hunts everything that moves, loves every other cat and wants to be buddies, he could eat until he throws up and then continues eating, brings thrown toys and hair ties. That's Copper, orange boy.
On the other hand, there is black Jiji, spoiled and jealous, huge with long legs and tail, needs to eat from a separate dish, has his own toys, hates vets, not fond of other cats and people, like to climb on my shoulders, likes water and small dogs, eats with his paws, sleeps on my neck and face...
Both found in terrible conditions as kittens (Jiji frozen, Copper poisoned and beaten), now are huge healthy boys, vaccinated, chipped, spayed, eat cooked meat and fish and favorite dry food. Love them with all my heart. ♥️
Animals are for forever.
Thank you for everything ♥️♥️♥️ your videos helped me get their trust and take care of them. ❤️❤️❤️
I’m not very good with cats, thanks for explaining this.
It's learning a new language when you interact with any animal - watch them "talk" to each other if you can and modify what they do to work for you.
Awww kitty was so patient and nice 😊
If you but your hand over my neighbor's cat's head he stands up a little and presses his head into your hand😂
He breaks cat law
My mom’s cat completely MELTS when I rub her ears like that. If I rub her ears for a few seconds, she will BOLT and follow me into the other room just to get more ear rubs. She will sit in my lap and let out the cutest little sigh before she melts and falls asleep ❤️🥹
Of course he pets you, bcuz cats ARE the real owners 😜
Even for kitties, consent is everything!!!
Jackson, you are the *man*!
I have never had a cat myself, but I really enjoyed "My cat from hell".
Thank you for putting this into words far better than I ever have. People have always wondered why cats that hat everyone else always love me, like when I was working at a cat sanctuary one of the things I loved doing was socializing the shy/“aggressive” cats (aggressive in quotes because all cats can be aggressive, but they’re only responding to us and what we’ve done to them in the past).
Thanks Jackson! When I come home, or my cat(s) walk by, I bend down and stroke his back. Owning 2 for 9 years, I (we) thought it odd he would bend his back down to the floor and walk away. Now I know why. :) 💚💜🌴😎
If your cat evades touching her back /spine it might be pain from arthritis or something else.
This actually works!! I applied your method today with my friend's cat Hazel who usually looks like she is going to eat me when I approach her. THANK YOU!!!!
I’m gonna get a cat soon and this is very helpful!

Yaay best cat dad🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️😻
I recently got 2 farm kittens that were very tiny and in bad shape, abandoned by their mother. I couldn't say no! I worked as a veterinary surgical tech, so I got them healthy, so they've thrived and now they seem to adore me. I sit and they're both on my lap instantly, grooming me and sleeping as close to me as they can get. Am I mom? Hubby built a giant cat tree with a treehouse on it to go near a window, which changed my whole idea of home decor. Ha! I've always had dogs, so appreciate your educational videos!
Oh I'm definitely trying my girls' ears, I'm looking forward to their reactions!
I'm a new cat mom as of 7.9.19 and couldn't be happier. My Samson saved me! Jackson thank you for these videos because they really help me understand him so much better. We are the best of friends and I love him so much! Looking forward to more videos from you.
All I learned from this was that petting a cat is oddly similar to having a girlfriend 😂
Once I saw a cat I did'nt know in my neighboorhood (and I know most of them), so I called him, he went running at me, jumped on the large fence, put his upper legs on my shoulders and gave me a full cuddle, with rubbing his face against mine and licking my face. I had never seen this cat in my life, I didn't even touched him, it was amazing.I never saw him again, but I still think about him from time to time
I have two cats, one of them let us touch her body, belly and tail. The other one no way!
I’m allergic to cats, so I can’t really get too close to them but I love looking at them from a distance and saying things like, “You’re a good kitty!” in a cutesy tone!
I'm a cat momma of a 2 1/2 year old girl tabby. I have always petted cats the right way, I just thought I had a way with them.

He says our cat acts more like a dog but its because he has learn the mistakes he made before in his approach toward cats. He even walks our cat! They are so cute together!!!
I'm surprised you didn't mention the area at the end of their back before the tail
