The Osaka arc is my favorite arc in any manga. It's so intense throughout every chapter and the stakes just keep getting raised. I LOVED that the boss alien just casually presents the remains of the (presumably) strongest human in the series so far. It's such a good framing device to explain just how overwhelming the odds are.

About the last fight in the Katastrophe arc. The alien threatened to bring down the whole ship on earth if Kurono didn't fight him because Kurono killed his brother. That's the reason they fought.

I would explain Gantz reason to target Tae are the following:
    1) Yes, Gantz did actually remove the invisible cover that every Hunter and Alien had during Missions. But the reason for that might be, that Gantz actually "updated" himself. There is no need for the cover-up if people can still find out that someone is a hunter. It might also be that the missions after the Ring-Aliens become way more intense. The Oni-Aliens are WAY stronger than anything the Hunters faced before. The only thing that comes close is the Boss-Alien Kannon from the Buddha-Mission. It's also the sheer Mass of Aliens. There were hundreds of Oni-Aliens, hundreds of Yokai-Aliens and hundreds of Statue-Aliens in the Italian Mission. It might be that it was just too much for Gantz to cover up this huge amount of Aliens and Hunters simultaneously.
    2) Yes, Gantz actually had somewhat of a personal vendetta with Kurono. He fucked him over by only transporting him and not a single ally into the room in the Shorty-Alien mission. The reason for that might be that Kurono dared to shoot at Gantz and demand to revive everyone after the catastrophic outcome of the Buddha-Mission. It's almost like Gantz wanted Kurono to fail this mission, to bring him back in line and do his damn job as a Gantz-Hunter. He also might have done it just for the Lulz. Gantz is a fickle entity. He fucks up shit, like cloning Kishimoto even though she was not dead, the way he communicates with the Hunters, the insulting Nicknames he gives them and ESPECIALLY fucking with them in terms of info about the Aliens and the Gear.
In the very first Mission, he tells them to hunt the small Onion-Alien, but doesn't tell them that a far more dangerous one is the boss. He also does the same in the second and third mission. In the fifth Mission, he actually shows the Boss Alien, but doesn't mention the far more dangerous Dinosaur Aliens. In the Buddha-Mission, he showed two separate targets, why not in the Kappe-Alien Mission? In the Italian-Alien Mission, he doesn't give any info at all, and sends them into the, probably, most dangerous mission that they had to endure, fighting aliens that totally annihilate the Hunters by mere touches. No info about a boss, no info about the aliens at all, no time limit, and he just evacuates them minutes later, after a shit ton of Hunters got slaughtered.
He also doesn't give a single info about the Gear, and the Katastrophe Timer is also never mentioned. Nishi had to show the Hunters that something is coming. Gantz didn't say anything about the coming invasion.
    3) Like mentioned before, Gantz is just a gigantic asshole without any kind of moral. He treats the Hunters like shit, and even develops kind of petty Vendettas against certain Hunters, especially Kurono. My theory on this is, that Gantz wants people like Kurono was in the third mission. Ruthless, effective and very confident in their skills. It might be because he wants these coldhearted Hunters to be ready for the invasion, it might be something completely different. But the way he specifically targets Kurono is no coincidence in my eyes.
You see, Gantz was already "uncovered" by Nishi. He wrote in an Online Blog about Gantz, about the Katastrophe Timer and about other, very shady, shit regarding Gantz. The reason he never targets Nishi or simply blows his head off is, that Nishi as a Gantz Hunter was never discovered. Kurono on the other hand WAS discovered by Tae. She knew that the invisible Person right in front of her was Kurono without a doubt. The problem here is, that Kurono was in a mission at that time and even interacted with Tae by protecting her from the Ring-Aliens attacks.
That's probably the reason why Gantz didn't let the hunters go and immediately after the finished Ring-Alien Mission send them to their next one to eliminate Tae, because she found out that Kurono is a Gantzer and he would have to blow is Head off after the Ring-Alien Mission is finished.
It's especially cruel that Gantz even goes through this whole procedure of Hunting Tae down just to say, "You know what...fuck it. Next Mission you are all not invisible anymore. The Aliens are also visible by the way. SURPRISE!!! Lelelelelelelelele"
Another Hunter that was targeted by Gantz is Izumi. He chooses the third option to be freed and forget everything about Gantz.....well...or not. There is no further info about this option, if it might be a huge lie by Gantz that you forget everything and that you are, in fact, not truly freed, or if Gantz actually had his fingers in this with Izumi, not letting him forget everything on purpose so he might remember again and come back, what he ultimately did. Izumi was the perfect Hunter. Ruthless, intelligent and effective. Everything that Kurono might have become if his third mission didn't end in disaster. It's also very interesting that Kuronos head didn't explode, even though Izumi absolutely knew that Kurono was a Ganzter and even told him to fight him in his Suit and with his Gear. Izumi, who was freed at that time and was an "outsider", knew all about Kurono, yet Gantz didn't kill Kurono.
Just my two cents on the whole Tae Mission situation.

I like your point in gantz just being a dick and messing with people. Reminds me how he gave the hunters nicknames based on their looks or personality, not caring to know them. That's most likely why Tae was hunted, just to fuck with Kurono, and possibly drive him to be more driven and angry to fight the aliens

One of my favorite moments of gantz for me was the mass revival situation. Not because a lot of great characters came back, but because noone even mentioned kishimoto. It brought me to an interesting moral question.
Gantz themes want us to think that life is disposable and very mich meaningless, that it is just cells that interact in a certain way, that much is clear for everyone at the latest in the room of truth. However kishimoto initially opened up the issue of wether that mattered or not and even kurono with reikas revive. Wasn't their gantz kishimoto a different person to the normal one?
Is letting her stay dead a mercy as her original is alive, or cruelty on account of her just not mattering to kurono and even kato. I loved the ignorance towards her, like they aren't all clones of dead people l, but somehow because her original was alive the drastically different person that became gantz kishimoto did not mean anything, does that mean her sacrifice was also meaningless as she should not have existed anyways?
But non the less really great video and while I personally love the ending with some small caveats I also don't think of the ending as one big alien invasion arc but rather multible smaller sub arc if you will. That helped me really love the quick pacing, as everything felt geuinly like a ticking clock was pressuring them

I feel like you didn't give the Vampire arc enough attention because it was a bit shorter than the rest of this list, but it had one of the best fights in the series when Izumi and Kei take on all the vampires by themselves, and then there was the whole plotline with Kei's estranged brother who turned out to be a Vampire himself and you realize that these vampires just slice people apart with their swords before drinking their blood. This arc alone probably belongs in the top 5.

I heavily gotta disagree on hating the last arc, especially your points on the god room and final fight
I’ll shorten my argument as short as I can because I doubt you wanna read a whole essay but it still is a lot: while the god room and basically all of Gantz is unsubtle about how humans are weak and insignificant especially compared to all the crazy aliens (also I don’t get how you say that the series is subtle about those themes before the god room because it is clear as it can get without someone saying it out loud that the author wants you to think humans are small in comparison) and what this does is it plays into the last fight, like you said they have technically won, humanity as a whole at least, but people Kei cares about are still up their fighting and are most likely gonna die. Now if Kei listened to everything the story has told him he would know that it doesn’t matter because both them and him are insignificant and if he did choose to fight he could end up losing his girl again, according to the story he has no reason to fight. But despite that he risks his life and fights anyway almost in rebellion to the story it’s because that was the author actually wants to say and that’s what that last fight represents, that even though humans are insignificant and fragile what he value still has meaning despite that and it’s worth risking death over
Also I know it was probably disappointing to see the big bad race not be that complicated but I personally really liked it, the final boss race basically just being better humans playing even better into the themes of the story, and I feel like the story he was telling in that last arc would work if they were for example like the statues in the Italy mission

    • @ModernVagabondIsHere
      @ModernVagabondIsHere  4 месяца назад +1

You make good points. When I say the story was being subtle, I meant pretty much up until the last arc, not the god room. While the story never flat out told us human life was insignificant, it portrayed that through the countless deaths and resurrections the characters went through, I agree. I'm not saying it was hidden from us, but to me, it felt more that the story was portraying it through deaths and interpersonal dialogue. The god room though, takes all nuance away and out right says "human life means nothing". I understand the theme of the manga is to keep living even when objectively, your life is insurmountable compared to every human life, but I just didn't find that part to be engaging. It felt ham fisted to me

Regarding your point about the Shorty Alien Mission challenging the morality of the Hunter’s actions, I felt like the Onion Alien Mission did the same thing, it wasn’t explicitly stated to the same degree but it was emphasized through the panels more IMO.
The hunters brutally kill the Kid Onion Alien, who was previously running away and only finally struck back after being cornered. Its last moments involve it begging for its life whilst sobbing profusely, very difficult to read.
When the Adult Onion Alien arrives, it’s clearly enraged to see its child dead, and it’s very obvious that it only attacked the hunters because of that singular fact. There’s even a panel of it reminiscing about the kid onion alien.
I’m not saying those specific hunters deserved to die since they did believe it was a gameshow, however, can you really blame the Adult Onion Alien for responding the way it did????
If you arrived home to see strangers standing over your loved ones mangled corpse, covered in their gore, how would you react?
Really makes you wonder who the real “monsters“ are in the story.
It’s a great reoccurring theme that really underlines the fact that despite the hunters being humans fighting literal monsters, in some twisted way, they’re more monstrous than the aliens.

i know this isn't the best of the opinions but i liked reika wayy more than tae bro. Reika had been there fighting since she was introduced and tae...
that last arc just made me straight up hate the character.
Whats ur opinion on this? I have mixed feelings just after ending the manga right now

I think Reika is a great character, and I do far enjoy her more then Tae. I agree, the last arc made Tae a bit unbearable, although I find it criminal Reika was given an offscreen death

@@ModernVagabondIsHere If there's one thing I dislike about this series, it's that Reika off-screen death. And then the god-aliens even taunt us by bringing her back just to kill her off again. She deserved better.

Just finished reading the manga and couldn’t agree more about the Katastrophe arc. Holy shit it’s hot garbage. That being said, I really enjoyed most of the other volumes so I don’t regret reading it

maaan the last arc was the greatest disappointment in manga history it’s a complete disaster.
all the explanations make nearly no sense and the ending was just so unsatisfying.
