This Punching Board Will FIX your Saddle Stitch!

  • I've been using this thin rubber punching mat since I started leather working. It worked absolutely fine... Until it didn't. And "fine" is not the standard that I generally reach for in my leather work. In a world of cool designs, glass edges, and amazing leathers, your stitching should be on point.
    After making the switch to the OKA Punching Board, it became pretty clear that this was a missing piece of the puzzle. My stitching immediately looked better and was easier to do.
    When you start leather working, usually your saddle stitch doesn't quite look right. After hours of practice getting the technique down, it should improve. But you'll also find that the holes you punch drastically affect the look of your stitch line. Once you upgrade your stitching punch/chisel/irons/whatever, you'll likely see a huge quality improvement (assuming you started with a cheap, lower quality punch).
    The mat you punch on, turns out, plays an important role in these stitching holes looking more uniform. Especially on the back side. It seems obvious now that I think about it, but I never gave it much thought before I started having issues with the old Amazon one.
    Now you can definitely get away with using the rubber Amazon mats. They do work pretty well for a bit (still not as good as the OKA board). But if you go this route, I'd recommend replacing it more than I did. The issue starts popping up as it gets weakened through regular use.

    Good to see you Tim! I bought the Novalene (reddish) block a long time ago. You are correct that the stitching holes are much cleaner than the soft rubber? mat. Kind of like putting a sacrificial board behind your work when when drilling holes. Less tear out. I strickly use the Sinabroks 1.2 and 1.5 mm stiching punches. The round holes work so well with 1mm Ritza thread. I did buy a new set of Eric's Buckleguy stitching punches and they work great also. Take care.

    Thanks brother. This is exactly what I needed. My trouble was every silicon punch board I use began to bulge and warp. I find myself having to 'push down' the bulges to get the surface level, before striking. Quite annoying. Cheers!🍺

      I too had that problem. I even tried heating it up to unwarp it. Annoying indeed.

    Great video. Ive enjoyed your content for a while now. Its nice to see another Canadian making great videos such as yours.
    A few other tips and observations: A Heavy Maul will also be beneficial to make cleaner stitches. However the Surface you use as your base matters too. I also found that "Poundo" boards do make it challenging to get the pricking Iron out of the material. The thicker the Leatther the harder it gets. The stitching board, is a game changer!!

      Thanks, Johnny! Much appreciated! Good points! I actually strategically punch on the corner of my desk right where the leg is because, as you say, the base matters. And I definitely found switching to a tapered maul helped my punching. I'm actually thinking of going a bit heavier with my maul now...

    I have the same board it’s great. Oka Factory says you can warm the surface with a heat gun and roll it smooth with a roller to refresh and flatten the surface.

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  5 месяцев назад

      Absolutely! I'll definitely be showing that process once it's time. I've heard a piece of parchment paper on it and running an iron over it works too.

      My favorite punching board. One thing to watch out for is getting the board too hot with the iron. I slightly warped it the first time I did it. I found the heat gun worked better for me. I also use an orbital sander on it occasionally . It dresses it up nicely and is fast. Thanks for another great video.

    I have the Large Oka punch board and it made a huge difference! They are expensive, but I've been using one side for over a year and my punches are still sharp, the board shows hardly any wear, and I still have the other side totally clean. One note: Don't use hole punches on this. I have 2 spots where a hole punch pulled a perfect little circle out of the board.

      I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the OKA board makes a huge difference! I'll keep that in mind about the hole punches. I was wondering about using them on it... Thanks!

    OKA Boards for the win! Just don´t forget to close that holes with a roller. I scratched some leather with the ridges of the holes before i started closing them.

    Does anyone know what they used in the 1800s? I do living history and I would like to practice leather work. Maybe just a stich pony and awl?

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  5 месяцев назад

      I know they used punches that didn't go all the way through. Then they held an awl in their hand as they stitched to pierce the leather the west of the way through. It's the old school way. I've also heard of punching on the end grain of a wood stump. It's probably some combination of both.

    I’ve heard the surface of those boards can be rough. Sometimes it can scratch the surface of higher gloss leathers or shell? Did you find this to be a problem?

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  5 месяцев назад +1

      Mine isn't very rough but I could see it maybe getting rougher with use. The board can be smoothed back out by putting a piece of parchment paper on it and running an iron over it.
      I'll try punching some higher gloss stuff and check this out though!

    How do you sharpen those Sinabrooks punches?

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  5 месяцев назад

      If you go to my channel and look back through my shorts, I did a video on keeping them sharp using a strop. It's the same process as that except with sandpaper. I think I used grits from 400 - 3000. Works like a charm.
