One of my personal favorites is at the start of Super Paper Mario. You need to talk to an NPC to raise a bridge to progress. The NPC then asks you what his favorite color is, and he kicks you out of his house if you answer anything but red. Now the next guy does the same, but since his favorite is green and Mario is dressed in red, he kicks you out regardless of your answer. It’s one of my favorite examples of this, and the thing is, the bridge raises anyway! It gets you nervous over answering wrong for nothing! I feel like more games need to use some humor like that now.

The problem with the anger factor (for me) is if it goes beyond reasonable, while it won't stop me from completing the game, it will prevent any future replays as the experience was soured to the point of being a chore rather than enjoyment. Elden Ring did this to me recently where instead of catharsis from a victory after 100 tries my thoughts were simply "What a waste of time."

Earlier in my life, I was addicted to winning games. I staked my entire self-worth on it, and the only response to losing was that I had to play better, practice more, and beat myself up harder for allowing failure. The good feelings only persisted as long as the "victory" text was on screen, but the pain of never being good enough was constant. If I lost, it was MY FAULT, so I tilted, played worse, tilted harder, and that would lead to a painful session where I attempted to prove that I had what it takes to win. Usually, the tilt would not allow this and I would crash irl, drowning under the weight of my own expectations.
These days I've restructured my relationship with games. I get angry far less, and if I feel myself getting frustrated it's quitting time, at least for 10-30 minutes or just switch game. I game less than I used to, but enjoy it so so so much more. Now that winning isn't my life, I'm actually a better player because the pressure isn't there. If I kick ass I kick ass, and if I don't, there's next match.
If getting angry at a game is actually fun for you, that's okay. I still bitch at the TV for bullshit desync or whatever, everyone needs an outlet. However, if you are internally abusing yourself because you lost, you need to find out why. Nobody deserves to be abused. There's only one person you can truly make treat you right, and they're always there. How they treat you matters. Take care of yourselves guys.

I disagree with this framing, at least in my personal experience. I am a disturbingly calm player. I was once playing LFD2 and trying to beat every chapter on the hardest difficulty. On one level I was continually getting matched with a troll. He would show up, kill me and my teammates, and then leave. And he kept showing up to do this every time I tried reloading the level. One by one my allies left until I was the only one playing.
I kept playing though. He kept killing me over and over. Annnnnnd....I didn't feel an ounce of rage. I just considered it a part of the challenge and carried on. At one point curiosity overtook me and I started a conversation with the troll.
Me: Wait (before he left again)
Me: Why are you doing this?
Him: Because I like to make people mad.
Him: I can stop if you want.
    Me: I honestly don't care.
Him: Well, its not fun if you don't get angry. Good bye.
    Me: Take care!
And he left. Some teammates joined the match and I kept pressing on. Eventually he showed up again...only to immediately leave without doing anything to my teammates or me. I was amazed for a moment until a new troll showed up to mow us all down. I laughed, checked the clock, and powered down the game to go to bed.
Rage is an experience I rarely feel, or that motivates me to keep playing. I was playing a rage game called 'Will you Snail' and I was actually disappointed in the insults of the antagonist and their inability to stir any emotion in me.
I recently picked up Elden Ring. Same story, I can keep fighting the same boss over and over without feeling an ounce of rage.
None of the characters in Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch, or League of Legends make me mad to fight against them. I love everyone in the roster and am unbiased by my failure to beat them at times.
Moments like this made me realize there is something weird with my brain compared to many other gamers that I meet. There are things in real life that make me mad, but I am always quick to mitigate that anger through things like meditation or angry emails that I don't actually send.

    • @pleasegoawaydude

I play a game where the developers intentionally encourage toxicity and unhealthy gameplay habits. (Manipulating you into feeling like you have to grind for hours/spend money on it. Getting mad is expected and it's more an issue of not getting mad enough to get banned.

I use to play games until they get me really mad until I think its been like 4 years now, I punched a massive hole in my wall because i tried to get into Battle Royale games (BTW I am really bad at games for how much i play them) and looking at physical property damage made me realize that videos games aren't really worth this amount of energy, and that combined with me realizing I don't really like feeling mad, is the reason why now whenever I get upset with games I just turn them off and play something else.
And that is why I will never finish Elden Ring especially now that I can play Lego Skywalker Saga, a game for children more inline with my skill level.

See, I played Dead Space 2, I love the game. However later in the game I found myself being stuck for an hour or more at sections. I never exactly got mad, but excitedly frustrated. Despite that after the section I'd be desperately low on ammo and low on health and no stasis, but I'd say "I wish that was harder."

I'm fine putting a game down because the level of challenge it offers or the patience and dedication that it demands just isn't what I want to put up with. I can realize when I'm out of my depth and I'm just not clicking with a game on a fundamental level.
But when I _almost_ enjoy a game, though it pisses me off and it's clear that my wasted time honestly wasn't due to a screwup on my part, I get upset to a point that might seem excessive to others but is certainly warranted to me. If the game allows me to softlock myself because I approached a combat zone understocked, that's not my fault. If the map is just too open and enemy players make it a sniper-infested hell, that isn't my fault. When a boss is obnoxiously sponge-y or possesses disgustingly overpowered attacks (and slim as hecc dodge windows), that isn't my fault. There are solutions for all of these issues, but why should I be forced to load a save from an hour back, boycott half of a game's maps, exploit bumps in the AI, abuse an obscure meta strat, or otherwise optimize the fun out of my own experience just to play my game without being a step away from uninstalling at every turn?? I'm willing to adapt to a context in which the it seems fair to ask that of the player, but some things are just unreasonable to demand of me. I feel no shame about being a casual player, don't you dare punch down. Just let me have fun.

RNG makes me mad because I have dog crap luck. I'll drop in Apex Legends, grab a p2020 and a bandage out of a crate, turn around and have a full squad with r-301, wingman and peacekeeper and purple Evo murdering me. It would be a fluke, but it will happen 4 or 5 games in a row and piss me off.

I by no means consider myself a good player, even games where I have the movement down to a science. I refuse to play hard difficulties because I will get so unbelievably mad and start hating a game I love. Halo Reach is the only halo i've done legendary on and will never again. The part that hurt the most is that the halo community says that Reach is the easiest to do legendary on yet I struggled so hard with it. If it's a fighting game like smash bros. that's one thing cause it's a nice challenge, but a shooter (3rd or 1st person) will make want to drive to the developers house and kick them in the balls because I suck at their game.

Seems misleading to me. As you said , it's not the art of getting mad, it's the art of overcoming difficulties. Also don't believe teabagging or trolling can be compared to intentional game design. As that was a learning curve that was programmed into the game to help players get better. Trolls don't care if one gets better, unlike devs. They just want to bully to bully. The already implemented design for all games is the defeat screen and loss/reduction of score, that's the true motivation intended by devs. Trolling is something a player does that is an unintentional, possible game mechanic. The unintentional nature is what makes it considered fun. I appreciate the video. I just don't understand the relation to player trolling.
I already accepted the intentional design that devs create for challenge, as an achievement hunter, it makes me believe every achievement is possible. Thanks for the vid

My own Slayer Gate is the Trial of the Fool from Hollow Knight. I have beaten both Nightmare Grimm and The Radiance (after many, _many_ tries, granted) and this challenge still mocks both my lack of skill and poor hardware choices. But it does come at a point where I can't take the stress and anger anymore, and I have to back down, defeated, and let me tell you, it's not a fun feeling.
I don't keep on trying because I enjoy being mad, I keep on trying mostly becasue my pride is too damn high and fragile sometimes, and being bested by a computer sucks.

Cod 2019 has Skill based matchmaking, but for as long as I knew, I’ve always been on top of the scoreboard of most my games. It keeps throwing tryhards at me and I can see their hands shaking fighting me. But all I can do is laugh knowing I don’t have to break a sweat. So much shit talk gets tossed around and I just laugh. No other game can I consistently get 3kd average and easily get 1-3 10kd games a day.

I really only get very annoyed or outright angry when I feel like a game has cheated me. Example:
Maybe 40% or so through Outlast 2 you are put in a typical horror situation: arena with scary boss who will kill you instantly if you are caught, and it's up to you to get away with your wits and your wits alone. This trope is used all the time in horror because it never fails to make a player feel smart for playing around a boss and outsmarting them. This particular arena was a small riverside town, with a big gate you needed to hop over. You needed to roll a cart up to it to jump over, but it takes a while, so you have to avoid the monster and come back a few times. Great so far. Buuuuuut, here's the issue: even if you're about 100ft away from your objective, and see Marta near you, and you use that chance to get over to the cart, she'll instantly teleport over there. This leads to feeling like you were cheated. You can lead her away, knowing she doesn't walk very fast, and get as far away as possible, then sprint all the way to the cart, just to plainly and blatantly get cheated by the game. Made me quit the game for a week. I was playing on the harder difficulty and was really happy when I felt like I had got a hold of the monster and had outsmarted her, just to have the game spit in my face and say "fuck you, asshole".

I normally don't rage much, the most I'll do is throw my controller onto my mattress (its bounced off a few times and it was hilarious enough to make me laugh). That said, dark souls brought that out in me. I've NEVER been so angry at a game, but I like it. Idk maybe dark souls enjoyers are masochists.
