My daughter is 8 and just started playing goalie this year. I’ve searched a lot for videos and recently came across your page. Just wanted to say thanks for what you do, your videos are always very helpful whether it’s equipment or technique related. Keep doing what you do we appreciate it!
“Goaltending knows no allegiances” thank you for saying that! It’s important to look at the sport objectively and appreciate those who master their craft, no matter what color jersey they are wearing.
DUDE!!! I have been a student for years and a youtube junky training to preserve my game as I advance into my mid-50's. Yours are by far the BEST video's out there!!! I tried your idea (never would have thought of it on my own). I feel 10 years younger in terms of mobility. I'm 5'10 200 lbs -- been playing Vaughn Velocities for years and just switched this season to Warrior GT/Pro Seniors this season. It's taken me awhile to dial in the set up to get a comfortable rotation but the strap idea really helped. I've been on Stepsteel Extremes for 7-8 years and would never go back. With bad hips and knees, I use a wide stance to get into my butterfly. Your videos will add years to what's left of my playing days.
Hey, thanks for your comment! I'm glad you're digging my videos! It's super awesome to hear how my small contribution to the internet positively impacts the goalie community! Way to go with trying something new! Thanks for sharing your experience!
I went from having a boot strap go through the heel of the skate to doing a “Lundy” loop for about a season and a half. Now I’m not wearing a boot strap anymore at all. It takes a bit to get used too because it’s more of a lose fit . So slowly modifying equipment over a period of time helps you adjust. But not having a boot strap helps get better edges for sure!
Great video! My Vaughn V6 pro-returns from Niklas Backstrom had two bootstraps and four leather straps up the leg channel. I took out one bootstrap right away and kept the one through the heel. Even keeping the heel bootstrap loose, it doesn't jive with my Graf skates and I can definitely tell some resistance in rotation. I don't have a Ludy Loop on my Graf skates so I'll either add one or make an elastic strap to replace the leather one and try the Lundy loop. Thanks for the videos!
Hey Wayne. Old school boot strap guy on my Reebok 9K pads and CCM Extreme Flex 500s. Yep I even use 2 different kinds of pads and gloves. I remember toe straps, still have my 1995 Brown JB210 goalie pads I bought brand new
With my G3's I moved to using the Lundy Loop and really liked it....but then I gave the "no boot strap" option a try and liked it even more! Definitely worth trying out. With the G3/4s it's easy too, you don't even have to remove the strap. Just leave it connected to the ring and have it sit over the top of your skate. There's enough slack that it won't interfere.
Awww, don't tempt me with easy solutions... I might just do something crazy and go with no boot strap! Thanks for your comment and sharing your experience!
I have the same and I honestly didnt know the pad technology had changed so much until I stumbled across an article saying thats like dark age goaltending... yikes
I watched this a few weeks back and it helped. I bought new pads and new skates this year and had no clue what the loop was for. I was out of goaltending for awhile and had to learn the whole new toe ties, butterfly, etc. So I have been learning alot of new stuff. The lundy loop helped a lot. I seem to be able to slide a lot more (might be getting slide happy LOL). Thanks for the videos. They are awesome!
I've used both. I have a lundy loop on my skates, but I wear Bauer Reactors, and the heel strap isn't really angled well for it. So I still run a strap through my skate, but I keep it super loose. Whenever I update to a newer set of pillows, I'll probably switch to the Lundy.
I love your show VO Goalie. My home rink was Parazzo in orient heights, if you ever played there. Questions: what was the watershed year that delineates the change from old to new school of goalie play? More, which NHL goalie was the last to make the change to the new style of playing? As the changes usually happen gradually, I don’t recall the change being sudden or drastic from one season to another. Personally, I started playing goalie in the late 1970s, and While the new school of play is far less exhausting, I miss the excitement of old school goalie saves and individuality. Patrick Roy, while never my favorite goalie, I think he used the closest thing to the modern era style of play. What do you think? Lastly, will there be no discernible difference between one goalie to the next that it would make very little difference, at some point, who’s in net at the pro level of play?
Started playing goalie right before covid. Just started getting ice time again just recently. Going to try out the Lundy loop this week and see how it works for me. Love your videos btw.
I switched from a pair of mid-2000's eagle goalie pads to a (relatively) recent set of Bauer X700 pads. All I used in the new ones is the toe tie with no boot straps and I noticed my feet and ankles were a LOT more comfortable, and lateral motion increased with the difference alone. I may tinker some more with it but I'm loving the difference a modern pad makes to the mid 2000's era pads.
Awesome! It's actually pretty amazing how much goalie gear tech has evolved, even in the last 10 years! Sure, it's not a dramatic as going from deer hair to synthetic foams, but today's pads are leaps and bounds ahead of early 2000's stuff. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the new pillows!
I haven't played in years and I came across your channel because I was thinking about coming back. This is a great video because my skates actually do have a Lundy loop. I just didn't know what it was called and what it was for till I saw this. Awesome!
I'm still using a leather strap under my heel, but I run it very, very loose. It's essentially just a max limiter, but I found when I went to this loose setup at first, I had a similar experience as you. I felt less constricted and my skating was better. When I eventually replace my current pads with something newer, and my skates, I think I'll give the Lundy loop a shot.
Great point! Having that hard limiter is one of the benefits of a leather boot strap! It really boils down to what kind of function/responsiveness do you want your pads to have. Thanks so much for sharing your set up!
Switched to the Lundy Loop about a year and a half ago probably. Never looked back. Everything you said about it is exactly what I said when I switched. When I switched from my old Reebok’s with a leather strap to the G4s with the elastic strap it only improved it even more. Whoever doesn’t have G4s needs to get some!!! Side note, I got a half inch skate cut on my glove in last nights game....😭. Luckily it’s an easy fix though.
Skate cuts are the worst... but maybe it's an excuse for a new glove! I've been using the G4 around the back of my skate for the last few skates and yeah, I'm not going back! The elastic really is the best of both worlds IMO. Thanks for your comment!
Or you could just not use a boot strap at all... Lol. I have no boot strap, but I use wax laced toe ties. They're about 2 1/2 inches long, with no give in them. Hard to explain, but I love the feel, and I don't think I'd ever use elastic straps like warrior or Brian's has.
Woah, no boot strap! Let's not get too crazy (lol)! Look, it was bad enough I admitted to admiring a player from NYC, but with just Toe Ties and no Boot Strap... now you're talking Carey Price's setup... and I draw the line at any MTL team... Just kidding! I still supported Moog when he was with the Habs! In all seriousness though, one of the most fun parts about goaltending is having individual preferences that you discover work best for you. It's like a secret club that players do understand, but goalies instantly get it. On my RX10s, I was rocking 2 elastic boot straps and no toe setup, so my new G4 strapping is pretty much the opposite! The bottom line is as long as it gives you confidence, it's all good! Thanks for your comment!
I'm the opposite, I ditched the toe tie years ago but still use the boot strap. You want some connection between your foot and the pad and a semi loose boot strap is all I need. My old school mid 2000 pads used to have 7 straps but I have reduce that to 4 now and barely notice the difference.
Jonas Hiller was using toe straps on his Koho pads. I had two boot straps on my Vaughn Visions and a toe strap. Those pads were secure agains your foot back in the day compared to what we are using now. I have CCM Premiers, I remove the boot strap but will give the Lundy loop a try. I have Bauer 1S skates so maybe it’s time to give it a try when I get home in December at stick and puck.
Yes! Hiller was one of the last NHL'ers along with Marty to rock old school buckles on their toes! Great point about how the function of older pads pretty much dictated how tight/securely they were worn. Especially if you were making skate saves, a lot of that was about protecting your legs. I remember ratcheting down my old Vaughns too! Give the Lundy loop a try, you might be surprised! As always, thanks for your comment!
I really like your videos, I was thinking of doing this before your video .I was going to mode my skates to put a lundy loop on there but i see that you just wrap that around your skate. When you put that around your boot did you give this lots of slack or made the strap snug.
Hey, thanks for your comment! For me, my strap was snug and stayed in place without an actual Lundy loop. Then again, the G4s have an elastic boot strap, so that helped keep tension while still providing some give.
As a fellow old school goalie, I feel you. My biggest switch was going from Vaughn epics to Brian's Sub Zeros. So going from what, 6 leather straps on the Vaughn, to 2 elastic straps and 1 leather boot strap on the Brian's? I felt quite weird, but now I'd never go back. My skates have the Lundy Loop, but unfortunately my leather boot strap won't reach, or I would have tried too. Cheers.
Thanks for your comment! It's funny, because such a simple innovation (strapping trends) can make such a huge difference in how a pad plays! It's hard to envision where pad evolution goes from here on out but IMHO, it's definitely a good time to be a goalie! Thanks for sharing!
Next step is NO boot strap :) I have 1s pads and S190 skates. its funny how the 1s pads boot strap, the crs strap, the velcro makes its a Muther $($($ to get the strap through the lundys loop. I got so annoyed the last time that i went no boot strap and liked it. 1s pads can easy swap elastic boot strap to leather one which would make it very easy to get through the loop but not sure if its worth it if no strap felt great. My 1st couple of skates as goalie i was rocking the ccm 4092 skates, and used the boot strap around the back like you did without the loop.
Awesome, the more people suggest this, the more I'm tempted to go "boot strapless"! I'm all about easier and faster ways to get dressed! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Now I gotta try the Lundy loop tomorrow. My reactor 6000s don't have a Lundy loop so hopefully your method will work out with my G3s. Here's hoping it's awesome.
Sweet! I really think the you'll have no problems with your G3 elastic straps sans actual Lundy loop. It might feel a little weird at first, but it really only took me my warm ups to get a good feel for the added mobility. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you!
Loving your channel man. keep it up. I am rocking old school Bauer Supreme Pros (mid or early 2000's) and Koho 580s. I still use the old boot straps. The Supremes have 2 boot straps.
Thanks man! There's no school like old school! And I know you're old school by the old GSBB handle! Great to see some of the old guard enjoying my content!
Nice to see how far this channel has gone so quickly, your definitely doing something right! I don’t use a boot strap lol And by the way, go Bruins and red sox too of course. Too bad tuks isn’t off to a good start but halak is doing pretty good so far.
Thanks so much for your kind words! I'm having a blast with this channel and it's been great connecting with other awesome goalies! And yes, go B's! I think having both Tuukka and Halak will be the difference maker this season! Thanks for your comment!
I took the boot strap off all together and it was really nice for a while. When i upgraded from my G3 to G4 I started to get sore ankles and when I put the boot strap back on but in the Lundy Loop it fixed my ankle.
Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! You make a good point that depending on your set up, you might have too much mobility that could lead to injury. I think a lot of factors come into play like your skates, style of play and overall physical capabilities. Glad to know you found what works for you! Thanks for your comment!
ok i got the same pads G4 but not the pro . I had the g2 but these are lighter and stiffer and my slides suck so i got these maybe sliding could be easier , keep those video coming bro
Ok. I’m going to try it. I’m a little stuck in my ways but I did go to Step Steel and a bungee toe tie so I’m not completely against change. Whatever keeps us competitive as we age, right?!
Ha, awesome! I was always of the old mentality, if it ain't broken, don't fix it! But then I realized that I might be missing out on benefits by just being stubborn! Plus, in beer league, I'll try anything that gives me that competitive advantage (aka extends my playing days!)
Any benefit of going Lundy over just having a really loose boot strap? I don't have a loop on my skates and my G2 elastic straps got up behind my tendon guard a few times. So I just extended the boot strap.
For me, I've found that having the G4 elastic strap around the back heel of my skate has most notably helped keep the pad closer to my leg. It also helps close my 5-hole as the pads generally sit higher on my skate. A really loose boot strap wouldn't actively do this but rather passively act as a hard stopping point for when your skate moves away from your pad. It really just depends on what you're trying to accomplish with the boot set up. Thanks for your comment!
@@VOGoalie I don't know if it really works, but I've always left the bottom calf strap quite loose, and gone tighter on mid/top in an attempt to artificially increase butterfly flare. These beer league hips aren't as flexible as they once were. 😎
goalies are strange creatures. i know there's still NHL goalies that still use straps and buckles as opposed velcro systems. creatures of habit for sure. i just started using the lundy loop and i think i'm gonna stick with that!
I'm in a size M RBK senior pant. For me, I don't like suspenders, so an internal belt is a must. Plus I like a slightly shorter length in the legs. If you have any other questions about my gear, check out my In The Bag video!
Thanks for the suggestion! I thought about doing one of these mods, but with the elastic boot strap on the Warrior pads, there's enough tension that I don't actually need the loop! But it seems like moving forward, all goalie skates will include this feature. Thanks for your comment!
It's funny, because as recently as my Smith 6000 pads, I was rocking 2 leather boot straps! There is something to be said about the consistency of a leather strap. Thanks for sharing!
@@VOGoalie I'm still breaking in my new CCM premiere 1.9's so I am running tighter than normal to get the boot break just right. I will try switching it up to looser when they're broken in.
Yeah. I use mine. Knee goes off the stack otherwise. P.s. Skates fit wdith now, but, I legit think I have plantar fasciitis in my arches due to my size. If its not one thing its another....
@@VOGoalie Still hurt mate. Ugh. Not sure what do about it. Seems my plantar tendon in the arche gets stressed to hell while in them. Not sure why. 290lbs and short feet?
I LOVE the Lundy Loop. A year ago I bought a new pair Bauer 1x skates (after my old RBKs kicked the bucket). Having boots with no cowling made my Vaughn 7700 Leg Pads "slip" down my legs a bit. I tried different strapping methods to fix the issues I was having until I gave the Lundy Loop a try. It actually made everything feel MUCH better in comparison to my old setup. I swear by them now since they managed to raise my leg pads back up to their normal position and take my game to the next level. All of the traits I noticed were were mentioned in your video.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I've fully converted to running the strap behind my skate too! I do like the feel of my pads sitting a little higher on my leg. Thanks for your comment!

Ha, great way to gain that little extra flare! I hear ya about being old! I just embrace my Giggy-fly now!
Guiltyyyy, stuck in the boot straps
Holy FK! I didn't know my G3's did that!!! I've been wearing the Lundy loop the whole time too! XD
Ha! Glad this video helped!
Wait youre frm Boston? Wonder if ive ever played against you in any pickups somewhere.... Hopefully i run into you some time!
Boot strap for sure
goalies are strange creatures. i know there's still NHL goalies that still use straps and buckles as opposed velcro systems. creatures of habit for sure. i just started using the lundy loop and i think i'm gonna stick with that!
I'm still stunned by the amount of armor on the back of those pads. Seems like overkill to me. Just extra weight where its not needed.
I used to be Oldschool with the strap, went to the Lundi loop and now I have no bootstrap at all.
Lundy loop for the boyz!!
Scan you explain a Lundy loop?
This man is like the bob ross of goaltending and it’s the best🙏👑
I still have old school leather and horse hair pads. (The water mops.)
Ha, it's like Leg Day at the gym!
Boot strap
Old school, I have a loop on my 1s skates.
Ha! I know you kick it old school! But just wait until you catch up to 2018! (after new mitts!)
what size pants do you wear vo goalie
I'm in a size M RBK senior pant. For me, I don't like suspenders, so an internal belt is a must. Plus I like a slightly shorter length in the legs. If you have any other questions about my gear, check out my In The Bag video!
I still like the bootstrap too!
Ha, totally! Thanks for your comment!
VOGoalie Anytime! Love the videos! Keep it up!
I just do heel. I never felt a need to switch
Look up Lundy boot strap mod and u can make one easy for your skate for very cheap
Thanks for the suggestion! I thought about doing one of these mods, but with the elastic boot strap on the Warrior pads, there's enough tension that I don't actually need the loop! But it seems like moving forward, all goalie skates will include this feature. Thanks for your comment!
Leather boot strap, under the heal :)
Thanks! You make a great point about using the boot strap to help break in your pads to your liking! I bet your tip will help someone out there!
I’ll always use an old school boot strap
Yeah. I use mine. Knee goes off the stack otherwise.
P.s. Skates fit wdith now, but, I legit think I have plantar fasciitis in my arches due to my size. If its not one thing its another....
Thanks for your comment! Happy to hear that your True skates are working out!
@@VOGoalie Still hurt mate. Ugh. Not sure what do about it. Seems my plantar tendon in the arche gets stressed to hell while in them. Not sure why. 290lbs and short feet?
Lundy loop on the same g4
You live in Boston? I didn’t know that I live around Boston area yoo
Yep, love that Dirty Water! There are actually a few others in the area too! I think MA has always been a strong US hockey hub!
Lundy loop
Old school
i use lundy strap..... btw i have warrior rg4
Awesome, I really think the Warrior elastic boot strap is the best of both worlds. Thanks for your comment!
I just took mine off as I staked over it. LOL. What a mess.
I wear the same Under Armour shirt for every game (I wash it) after I got my first shutout
No boot strap lol
Team lundy boot here!
Ha! I'm totally Team Lundy Boot now too!
I don't even use a boot strap lol
Ola school bootstrap
I guess you meant Martin Brodeur instead of Mario Brodeur :p
I don't use a boot strap anymore
Ha, this could be the wave of the future! Thanks for you comment!
No boot strap at all !!
i dont wear them
I know what a toe strap is..
i dont even use a bootstrap its useless
Don't even use a boot strap
You dont even need Lundy Loop. See Carey Price set-up for proof.
Totally! And if Price ever wears his all Red set in a game (not just practice), I'll be the first to go without a boot strap! Thanks for your comment!
Boot strap
Lundy loop
Sweet! ...now if I only actually had a Lundy LOOP... Thanks for your comment!
Lundy loop
Nice! Looks like that's my preferred strapping method too (at least for the foreseeable future...) Thanks for your comment!
Boot strap
Awesome! Chalk another tally for Team Boot Strap! Thanks for your comment!
