A couple of additional thoughts about mask fitting. The first thing is more of an issue if you’re wearing a certified or straight wire cage. Make sure that the height of the mask puts horizontal bars above and below your eyes and you’re not looking right at a bar. If you end up looking at a bar you’ll either move the mask while you’re playing, or you won’t be able to see. Neither of those things is going to work very well. The second one is about the straps. Make sure that the elastic is sound and springy and snug enough to hold the mask snugly in place. You don’t want it to wobble. Also the elastics and the clips (plastic buckles) have to be replaced from time to time. Something else you need to make sure to inspect. I keep an extra elastic harness and full set of clips in my bag just in case.
Hey, that might make a good series, making repairs and maintenance of equipment. Just a thought.
Cheers,
That's a great tip about snug fit. No matter how heavy your mask may feel in the hand, it should basically feel like a hat when it's on.
I still wear an 80's face-hugging mask lol
Damn that’s crazy but respect
I’m having trouble finding a reasonably priced adult goalie mask that will fit my extra large head. Roller hockey
My head so big, that the rear plate never fits inside the mask. I just finished buying a warrior mask and it’s the first one that fits better than the Bauer when I had before, which was the only one that fit.
My son is 10. Because of his height he takes alot of head shots. His face is center height in the net when he drops and top when he crouching. Right where they are shooting. Hes wearing a dangler and a neck guard. The neck guard is the Vaughn model that covers collar bones and maybe 1" up the neck. I just found all his screws loose and reset them with locktite.
I hear ya! My height (or lack thereof) means I take 'em in the noggin too! Good of you to double up his neck protection! Hopefully he's not playing with too many 10 year olds with cannons! Great tip with the Loctite!
I use a itech 960 cat eye cage best one they have ever made. Also one of the last ones before Bauer bought them out. But for me cat eye all day.
Nice, I always wanted one of those Itechs, but they are too narrow for my face! Thanks for sharing!
Idk. I think its the second most important piece of equipment.. id say my cup is more important.
Johnathon Teets would you rather get your nuts hit or a fractured skull and head injury that could potentially end your career? Also you could go blind.
VOG should do a video on cups!
go out and buy a goalie jock, you will be fine if your using one, ive been using some vaughn one since i started 8 years ago and ive never really been hurt by a shot there, helmet is the one thing you should go all out on pricewise
I know some guys that don’t wear a cup
@@derekduchene9242 that’s dumb really stupid if it gets injured enough you could never have kids ever again honestly that’s something that’s very cheap to buy as well a helmet can run you up $1500 A cup is like $50
You need paint on that mask...
As a s;edge hockey goalie 60 percent of my saves are with my face. LMAO
Thanks, this really helps. I’m a new ball hockey goalie, mostly all the same equipment so your channel has come in handy 😊
Awesome! Welcome to the crease! Thanks for your comment!
Thank you i also forgot to say ima a younger goalie and have plaed 5 years as goalie and i play in pewee
Good job buddy, keep at it!
Thanks as always. Your video on danglers finally convinced me to wear one. I did make one slight modification. I hate the clanking of the plastic against the chin of the mask, so I glued a small chunk of foam on the front of the chin - Voila!!! no more clanking and I can stay protected. :)
Liking the cheater cage on the Protechsport. I have the same with a cateye and Sportmask as a backup.
Thanks! I've been using a Cheater Style cage for the last 10 yrs or so and definitely wouldn't go back to a cat eye. I personally think the cheater has better sightlines. This Protechsport is actually the only mask I currently own, but a 2nd has been on my list for a while now! Thanks for your comment!
@@VOGoalie Good to know. I have to send mine back for a refurb and a new cage. Considering it, but I love the look of the cateye.
@@VOGoalie in total agreement. I have almost the identical Protechsport with a cheater and I'll never go back to a cat eye. I too think the site lines are better especially when looking down at puck on the ice in front of me.
You should have a competition for your mask paint
I got hit in the head three times at my 3 on 3 game today and two of my straps came off
I got my hands on a 2017 NME 8 for C$120 man, with a dangler. Just that a fit 3 is max 60cm and I am like 61-62. Little small, but, its what I have to work with. I personally tie my dangler on to my mask in a specific way. It keeps the dangler out of the line of sight and closer to my body leaving a smaller gap. Was inspired by this post: ingoalmag.com/news/tech-tips-that-danged-dangler-is-hurting-your-game/ I just went with rapping the cord around through the cage, inside the mask, and around the chin. If you have the correct tightness and sized cord your dangler should still move freely up and down. Plus less side to side slop/slap.
Oh, and my True skates fitment were done wrong and have to be remade. Ugh. Just wanna play hockey 😒😭
Great tip with your dangler set up! Thanks for sharing!
Sorry to hear about your Trues, but sounds like they're making it right! Thanks for your comment!

Watching this after I took 4 clappers to the face....
Hey vog thanks for all the videos you make a lot of them have helped me out one of them is not getting frustrated when it looks like you blew out when your team screwed up
Thanks so much for your comments! Glad my videos helped! Thanks for watching! #VOGSquad
Thumbs up for the Andy Moog Mask pose
Good note on the bent bars, I had to replace my cat-eye a few months ago when a shot caved in one of the curved bars about 1/2 inch. Something also worth mentioning to younger goalies who just want cat eyes because its what the pros wear. While, when in good condition, a puck can't get through a non-cert cat eye, a stick can. I had it happen in a game, and while luckily I didn't get cut and it didn't hit my eyeball, it did scare the hell out of me. You don't expect things to touch your face when you have your mask on! It has happened to pros too, I think Lundqvist had it in a game a couple years ago. Not sure if your style mask has the same issue Wayne? Just something to keep in mind!
Thanks for your insight! You're totally right, certified cages are also intended to keep out errant sticks! While some cheater cage styles do have larger eye openings that this could happen, I think mine are actually too small for a stick to fit But great point about cage design options!
I always wondered why in the NHL and major hockey leagues goaltenders aren’t forced to change out their damaged cages after a bend.
Hey Wayne,
I am looking to get a white cage for me Bauer NME mask, and I can’t find a replacement online. I was wondering where you got your white cage from? I was thinking of spray painting my current one but I don’t know if I could pull it off well.
Kid who doesn’t know anything about hockey: do you play any sports?
Me: yeah I play goalie in hockey
Kid agian: what do you do
Me: let’s put this really what it is....., I get hard disks of ruber thrown at me
good points but equally important is the rigidity of the mask, there is a reason, for instance, a Bauer 960 doesn't flex when you squeeze it when an NME 3 or 940 does, more rigid is better. Second is the level of the plushness of the padding, better padding dissipates the energy from the shot at a much higher level than a lower level mask
VOGoalie, if I can help, I like to tie my dangler up with the two holes around the chin area. This prevents it from blocking your view in close-up pucks when you look down.
Just got I brand new mask! I’m 11 and it’s a adult LARGE! Yes I have I big head, my player helmet is also adult large ( I play defense too)
This is good to know, but I’m stuck getting a kids size helmet😂 The other thing is, if puck comes at my head I will use the glove to defend. It’s a force of habit from softball😉
I like my Vaughn Pro's Choice mask, custom fit, and it keeps me nice and snug, I don't wear a dangler as I don't like the sound of it. Love your take on mask safety though!
One thing with my mask, it originally did not come with a chin cup which I added, and I found it not only reay stablized the mask so much more, but also helped a lot when I did get a head shot.
Arrr, b'y! The last True Goalie was the Gumper! The kids these days, dressed like battlebots. Where's the sport in that?
I get hit in the head all the time but one time my dad didn’t check it so on the ice the bolt fell off and when I took my helmet off to get a drink it was loose then I noticed that the bolt came off luckily we found the bolt on the ice and half fixed it but I didn’t bring my extra kit that has extra bolts cause that’s in my player bag
I'd rather rather take the shot to the cage or forehead area than risking it hitting the side of the helmet.
Good point! From a health standpoint, I've heard one should never turn their head away from a shot. Let the mask do it's job. Thanks for sharing!
Just switched from a neck guard to a dangler... spent an hour trying to tie it on perfect!! The woes of being ocd
I'd like to think of it like being particular about things. As goalies, we all have a little quirks! Thanks for your comment!
VOGoalie you’re welcome dude! Again, great stuff!
I love the shirt
I just got a NME8 Much improvement over my 10 y/o bauer
Boss how are you just want to ask you if you know any one looking to buy pro game used gear
Well, I use an SK2000 with either an HM30 or HM50......lol
Ha, now that's kickin it old school! #CWD4life
my masks has some huge chips , when do i know if i need a new mask?
1:00 oh, its not the balls protection
I like to use my mask for saves but it takes its toll, I have had to get a complete new cage and new clips but that’s what happens!!
Ha, you must be an old (soul) goalie! The great Dominator used to do the same!
Hmm, what about wearing glasses in a mask?
Thank you for the feature!! It means a lot!
You're welcome! Thanks so much for submitting! You rock!
I just use a helmet and cage with a dangler.
I wear a Sportmask Pro Series 2(Ward Mold). Already had to replace the cage once on a warm-up shot from my own team mate. Definitely the most expensive piece of gear I'm wearing right now but totally worth it. Enjoying my RVH FTW shirt!
Awesome! Thanks so much for your support and glad you like the Tee! I've had a few different Sportmasks in the past and have always loved them. Excited to see what their merger will bring next year! Thanks for your comment!
@@VOGoalie I was certainly surprised to see their partnership with OTNY but hopefully that'll make replacement cages more common and cheaper in the states.
I wear the Bauer NME 8 series Cat-eye cage. I have learned my lesson about cheaping out on equipment. Though it was not the bucket, I got nasty injury from cheap equipment.
Wayne you sell the t shirts and other stuff
Thanks for showing off my warrior sets haha now I just sold my bruins set and have a white g3 set in its place.
Keep up the great videos!
Thank you for sending in a submission and participating! You are super awesome! I was super tempted by a G3 set on Black Friday... but somehow managed to resist...
@@VOGoalie Yes i got my second set (all white) on Black Friday and used a WARRIOR15 code to save an extra 15% off the "Final Clearance" price for a complete steal like a Windmill glove save on a Wednesday. haha
Wayne love your videos also a goalie since I was 8 years old now 53 still on the ice getting peppered with rubber. I see you have some game in your videos would love to get on the ice with you anyway your videos are very helpful. Going to get one of those awesome shirts
I recently bought my first mask but unfortunately bc of my budget it ended up being a $42 Itech 1000SR mask. When I got it I actually had to reglue the skull plate padding back on for seemingly the 3rd time (based on how much old glue was already under it). Hopefully this does me good for learning to play thru a local program and maybe a half or quarter of a season of low level beer league
Glad to hear you've started playing goal! Congrats! But, TBH, you should try to upgrade your mask as soon as you can. When it was released new, that model was a low end mask, nevermind the fact it's now at least 10+ years old. You got one head, so try to protect it as best you can.
Do you know where I can get two screws for my Bauer goalie mask for the cage part here? Mine only has two screws in it
i wish i could play as a goalie, or even hockey at all but my parants wont let me. :(
Extra padding
I appreciate you telling people to not look for a certain this or that. I do wish goalies would look more at what materials the masks are made of. I paint a lot of masks and see guys send in the cheapest Bauer models to get paint jobs that cost 3x the price of the mask. I love getting paid to paint masks but spend more on the mask first and get the paint later. It’s your safety. If the sides flex, you don’t want it on your head. You cover a puck and a big dude losing his balance and falls on your head - that flexing mask isn’t helping you at all.
Great point about the layup of a mask! Aside from puck impact, player impact is also important as you mentioned! Thanks for your comment!
What style of cage is on your mask?
I know this is late, but that cage is a "cheater straight bar" style
Just trying to get IN to being a goalie(just need pads, blocker and glove, chesty, pants, stick, kneeguards, jock and skates) money is so tight i can't afford ITECH OR TPS lol that's bad but i am trying
I hear ya! Being a goalie is one expensive hobby! Keep your eyes peeled locally in the used market. Hopefully you can score a good deal in the near future!
hi, thanks for making the video. I'm looking for some advice , my son is 14 years old and plays travel hockey and he's a goalie, he' s been using a Bauer 940x Jr profile mask the past few seasons. all was good until recently the last 6 months when taking a shot to the front of the mask several times he's been getting cuts and fat lips. just recently during a game a shot from the point hit his chin causing him to break a front tooth. it seems like the chin strap loosens under pressure causing the mask to hit his face. does this seem right to you? have you ever seen this happen? do you know any solutions that can be done besides buying another mask? do you think Bauer may be responsible for this issue ? thankyou
Hi, thanks for your comment! I would definitely look at upgrading your son's mask, especially if shots to the head are resulting in any kind of injury. It could be due to any number of factors such as the mask no longer fits correctly to shell issues or even hardening of mask foams. Definitely consider an upgrade and I would suggest visiting a local retailer to aid in helping with a good fit. Hope this helps!
I cut my chin strap out i feel alot more free in my mask
Awesome channel, just found you. As for masks, DO NOT cheap out. Best to go to a pro shop the 1st time and try a bunch on, or get assistance from an actual goalie pro shop employee. Once you know your fit, you can order on line (if you're like me, and live in Montana, and the closest goalie pro shop is either Calgary, or Denver). Also, it's recommended if you play regularly to change the foam every 2-3 years (most will say 2 years at most).
Great points! Thanks for sharing! You're right, when you first start out, it's really important to actually try on different masks so you get a better understanding of how they should fit (especially useful with some goalie specific help). Then once you get that dialed in, you can always explore other options! Thanks for your comment!
Hey wayne, I recently took quite a few shots to the head in one game (6). Because I have a good helmet I never felt anything. But... it did break the weld on my cage. Have you ever had a weld fail on your cage? and how long do your cages usually last?
Thanks for asking! I've actually never had a weld break on me! At this stage, I'm not facing too many howitzers anymore so my cages tend to last for a while. That being said, it's my understanding that straight bar cages are less likely to experience issues as opposed to cat eye cages. I've been using cheater cages for the last 4 masks and never had any issues!
Dude I seriously love the content you make and it’s really helped me improve my game! Tomorrow I’m getting a new helmet a ccm one!
Awesome! Hope you like your new mask!
Is that a protechsport
I believe so
Yeah after watching this I think I’m gonna change my cage
Sounds good! Honestly, when it comes to the safety of your head, you can never be too cautious!
I have a rlly good helmet but i still get stingers
Sorry to hear, have you checked the fit and/or have you ever tried another mask? Sometimes one particular brand just doesn't work for some people.
Id recommend dodging shots like that, since its going above the net and theres no point of blocking it with your head. but thats just me, you do you lol
Ha, I typically try to duck on those high head shots, but my reaction time is just too slow these days!
Playing dirty is my hobby Haven’t you seen how short Wayne is??? High shots for him are mid way up the net. Haha. Love ya Wayne.
Gotta eat it off the noggin ftbs
Looked like Hasek with the noggin save
Ha, I'd have to break out my old Combo to channel my true Hasek! Thanks for your comment!
The ending is so awesome!!! Guy with the vintage tan setup looks clean.
About the helmet fitting, Please go into a shop and try them all on. I was trying to decide on the mid range of ALL the major companies... Only one fit my head right! Ended up getting a steal on a Pro level Vaughn (older year style) the fit even better than the mid range helmets and took that one home. I agree with the fit being the most important factor and I do check my helmet after every game that I have a headshot... but usually because I want to see if it left a mark on my pretty new mask.
Great point on actually trying on masks first! If you can, definitely do so! You might be surprised what mask actually fits! And sorry I couldn't pull your Insta sub (I am totally an Instagram noob). Send me a link to your YT and I'll be sure to get you in next time!
hey thats my gear haha thanks for the compliment

@@VOGoalie thanks again haha but now 4 sets and 3 generations lol maybe I shouldve went R/GT for 5 generations!
what mask do you where.
Looks like a protecsport
I stopped wearing a dangler because they were breaking. So I bought a goalie neckgard
Great point, neck guards are another important piece of gear. I think it all comes down to personal preference with the whole Dangler/ Neck Guard debate. Some people have a hard time with either or both. Personally, after my throat injury (where I lost my voice and had to go on vocal rest for 8 weeks) I don't take any changes and double up. Even though it can get hot and dangler noise is annoying, at least I know I'll be able to work the next day!
VOGoalie Thanks you are a great guy. How do I pick the perfect stick. I have a Bauer 2S. 27 inch paddle
Ooh, sticks are tough. Lot's of people say a stick should fit when in your stance and not provide "double" coverage. BUT, I think a stick should fit best when you're in your butterfly and not create too much of a ramp and/or raise up your blocker. For me, I use an INT 23-24" paddle for this reason, but YMMV depending on your size!
VOGoalie I use the 27 inch paddle and it helps me with with my shot. I pride in my shot and I know when the other team dumps and change I shot it up to the far blue line
So a friend of mine got a new helmet and when I took a look at it, the padding inside came out into the cheeks and then goes back out. Is that normal?
Thanks for your question! Honesty, all masks are designed differently, so without actually seeing how it fits, it's hard to tell. Depending on the make and model, some have more padding in certain areas than others. I sounds like the chin cup might need to be adjusted. What kind of mask is it?
VOGoalie it’s a Bauer NME 3
VOGoalie and I have a Bauer NME4 and the cheek pads are all level.
That's a tough call. Sometimes padding can be misaligned. I'd have him/her check back with the retailer they bought it from.
What brand of mask is that?
Hey thanks for your question! It's a Protechsport Luongo shell. I had Michel add an extra 1/2" in length to the chin as well as the "Roy" enlarged 3/4" hole pattern. Seriously, my favorite mask I've ever owned.
VOGoalie what other masks have you used ? And why is this current mask the best you ever had? Have you cracked your mask? Thanks
Took a wicked slap shot to the head, bent my face mask! I think it's time to upgrade!
Sounds like a good idea! Thanks for your comment!
Hi vog
Hey Ethan, thanks for your comment! #VOGSquad
ohh those hm 30s
Man, I loved me some Cooper HM30s! Although the SK2000 never quite fit my head right! Once a CWD, always a CWD!
@@VOGoalie I play Field hockey (recently I got some used ice hockey Gk pads but I haven't used them so far) , and I can't use anything else, only hm 30... I have a CCM 7000 but because of my dredlocks it always twist, falling off etc. Btw I found an sk 2000 at a flee market, and bought it for around 5 $ (its a small size, but looks epic in my room)
Guilty of 2 dented bars on a cat eye cage.
Next piece of gear is a step up from the nme8 I currently wear.
I think we all are guilty now and again, but at least you've got your priorities right! Thanks for your comment and GL with a new bucket!
