      Depends on the goalie I liked mine sharpe so I could move more freely but if you get the right sharping you can shuffle side to side no problem with really sharpe skates.

    I’m not a strong regular skater. When I put on regular player skates the rocker really messes with me. I can’t do a cross over to save my life. That said I 100% agree that we have specific movements that are specialized. My edge control, butterfly pushes etc. are all very solid and I find that as I’ve gotten better over the years It occasionally causes me to be a little slide happy as well. I think tossing a gopro in the net is a great way to check technique as well as identify areas that can be improved.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 лет назад

      Great point, the rocker on a player skate can throw off your overall balance and stability. And hey, if you can actually butterfly push I'm all ok with being Slide Happy. I mean, it's not called Slide Sad! Thanks for your comment!

    Good goalies are typically one of the best skaters on the team, regardless of how specialized the skating is; growing up I would skate out during practice with all of my teams--I could get into a forward skate and not look like a fish out of water, but none of the forwards could do anything with a goalie boot on.

    Myth: goalies are pretty much nuts.

  • @AzNightmare
    @AzNightmare 5 лет назад +2

    *Goalies definitely need to know how to skate, but their skating is specialized (as mentioned in the video) and quite unorthodox, as doing the butterfly is as well... You don't need the same explosive power that skaters need when they go forward, you don't need to know how to skate backwards fast or do 180° transitions like a defensemen or do crossovers. But you definitely need to know how to move laterally quickly, T pushes, shuffling, sliding around on your knees, etc. It's honestly not all that similar... I knew this one guy who joined a beginner team. To be frank, he couldn't skate very well at all. He looked like he was running on ice and wobbling his arms all over the place trying to stay balanced. Then we found out he grew up playing in net (somehow he did that before being a skater, cause usually it's the other way around) but he just wanted to try out being a skater to see what it was like. But when he went in net, he was pretty darn good and his lateral movements were on point.*

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment! You make some great points! For me, I'm so accustomed to the stability of goalie skates, that I look like Bambi on Ice with the way player skates are rockered! Funny you mentioned crossovers! I remember having to do them in skating drill back in HS both forward and back and then never doing them ever again since!

    One myth I didn’t see and have heard, is “they got all the padding… they’re the safest”… maybe I’ve heard that too many times and as a goalie myself, tell that to my nearly broken blocker hand, my 3 times broken ribs, many concussions, many times near blown out knees from pucks and pulled groins and too many (even 1 is too many) cup shots. Thankfully I’ve always worn a goblet so no skates but plenty of pucks to throat and fractured clavicles too… and sticks there along with through mask… I’m done. I love this channel lol. Teach ‘em!

    Goalies don’t have to be the fastest in a straight line, but we are typically the most controlled skaters. We also tend to have explosive power. It’s just the way the position works. The days when you put the fat kid or the kid who couldn’t skate in net are long gone. As an added tidbit I keep my skates super sharp. 7/16” radius and I get them sharpened at least once a month. (Very tempted by buy a Sparx sharpener for my work room)

    The better the skater the better the goalie. That being said, trying to compare goalie skating to that of a forward is like going to compare a formula cart driver to MotoGP. They are not the same thing. The movements are not the same, the positions are definitely not the same and the mentality is significantly different. Look at our gear compared to their gear. There is not one piece of equipment that can be used for both positions. Even the cup is different. Point being, if we compare each other in their area of expertise, we'll get killed. If they try to compete in our area of expertise, they'll make it about 10 minutes before being completely exhausted and good luck with the butterfly.

    • @VOGoalie

      Thanks for your question! The best way to get a low stance is 1) work on your leg and lower body strength as it takes more energy to maintain a low stance and 2) get your skates sharpened as a sharper skate/deeper hollow will help you grip the ice in a low stance and prevent slip outs.

    Only thing I disagree with you on here....Goalies should always strive to be the best skaters on the team. It won't be on displace in the same way, but knowing your edges will help so much for the specialized skating. Take the Hinge motion. I do not know players that can pull hat off. Most goalies don't not know how to do that correctly.
    If a goalie were to skate out, they should have the ability fundamentally play defense without missing a beat based on their skating ability alone. Stick work is a different story.

      @VOGoalie  5 лет назад

      That's great to hear! It' means that in today's game, there's been a shift in the perception of how important a goalie's skating ability is! I think the myth really is two fold. The casual fan may not understand how important skating is to the position, while those who play the game actually understand. It's also a generational thing. If you watch pre 90's NHL clips, goalie's skating ability seems to be severely lacking. But it's great to know today's goalie youths will be great skaters! Thanks for your comment!

With my GoPro, I'm using just the case the Hero 4 Black came with but swapped out the back for the open non waterproof back for better audio recording. For mounting, I have a knockoff helmet mount strapped to the center post with Velcro One wrap. Thanks for your comment!

    I played in the 70s and 80ⁿs. Goaltending mechanics today are completely foreign to me. However I can't argue against this sliding as it really does seem to take away shots along the ice. One thing I will never agree with is modern goalies won't stand against the post when the puck is in the corner. Hawks won the cup in Philly for that reason.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 лет назад

      So true. And Rinne has been victimized that same way in some high stakes games. I think with those low corner plays, the idea is that today's game is so fast, goalies feel like they can get down fast enough for low shots, so instead, make the shooter beat them up high. The problem is every player nowadays can snipe top shelf. Or they don't actually seal the post and the puck squeezes through. But hey, that's what Bettman wants right! But you're right, shots from extremely low percentage areas should never go in! Thanks for your insight!

      My understanding is it's when you recover back to the post and swing your body parallel to the goal line. As if you make a save in the butterfly at the top of the crease then recover back to the RVH but then immediately want to go post to post.

    I wonder if there is a more scientific way to track a goalie’s skating ability. I mean it’s all about be able to travel a couple of feet as fast as possible and then stop on a dime. Some sort of pedometer maybe? But then again. Butterfly slides, getting up 100 times or more all take leg strength and Cardio which would need to be measured a different way.

    I always found that question to be irrelevant. If one of the Oilers goalies can skate better than Connor McDavid then I would suggest that he might be playing the wrong position. The skating skills required of a goalie are so totally different from what is required of a forward or defenceman I find it impossible to compare. For sure though, you can’t be a good goalie unless your goalie skating skills are top notch.

    Goalies need to be good at technical skating. t pushes side shuffles forward and backwards. Having said that doing all those things is a lot easier in goalie skates. The way they are made low ankle wider blade and tip of blade in the rear helps keep you from falling back wards. Also using specific goalie sharping is always a good thing. I use 5/8. But free skating is not or skating the length of the ice is not something we as goalies need to do. Unless the other goalie calls you out 😛

      @VOGoalie  5 лет назад

      Great points! I go 5/16 on my steel and if I go to a new sharpener, they always ask me if I'm sure... Then I think to myself, if I'm asking for a specific hollow, I'm pretty sure I know what I like! Thanks so much for your comment! And if I ever get called out by the other goalie, I'll forever think of how my skates made me faster!
