Ahhh this car is so beautiful I want it more and more
It was my first car, I was 19 in 1973 and I studied the old car magazines and books. When I came upon images of the 190SL, that was it: the most beautiful roadster of the '50s, to my young eyes then. I had to have one! In six months, I did! It was well-used, a 1955 early production (#727 of the total run) and it needed restoration. I kept it for some years but sold it for $1,800: $400 dollars more than I paid for it! It had the octane rating compensator and NO power brakes. And a lot of rust! BUT here, just yesterday I saw "my" car again, in a condition that very few 190SLs will be found. This is a virtually 100 point restoration. I filmed it and then I looked it over, including under the chassis. It is flawless: ruclips.net/video/MMZDZY0Fj_w/видео.html
BTW, that car was restored by Palm Beach Classics for one of their clients. In person, it is ultra straight---in every aspect. My video does not do it justice. palmbeachclassics.com/ I met the owner of PBC after my video walk around. He was there for a Miami Design District event on Saturday that displayed extraordinary cars.
Just out of curiosity - did it cross your mind to bring that car home again by making the new owner a generous offer? Big fan of the SL190, SL220, SL250, SL280 here.
back in the day, most of the mid range sports car market had 4 cylinder engines and were typically light with not a whole lot of power. they were cars that you would call momentum cars, meaning to drive them fast you had to rev them out and then hold your speed. that was what a drivers car was back then, and it was everybody in the day, porsche, alfa romeo, mercedes etc... and that was because of the post war austerity that gripped europe at the time. it was hard to produce cars with large engines because there just simply wasn't enough resource to go around, this is why companies like jaguar were so successful. they charged mid ranged prices but had engines typically found in cars like the maserati or the aston martin, but how they did it was with really low quality parts. most of the high end cars came with 6's, v8's and v12's in europe were very rare at the time. this 4 potter was not very advanced for the time. in fact the best of the 4 bangers was by far alfa romeos. it was designed in the 30's by vittorio jano and it was so ahead of its time it was used until the 80's with dual over head cam and a hemispherical head. but for roughly around the same money as this mercedes, one can obtain a lancia aurelia. and that car was the car to buy out of all 50's cars and that includes the presence of the road going ferraris and the 300 sl. it was so ahead of its time, with a v6, radial tires, a 5 speed transaxle with inboard brakes, a monocoque shell, a wind tunnel, and the simple fact that in the period that was the car of choice for all the racing drivers of the day including fangio.
I didn't consider the economy, fuel, and wages. How hard would it be to find a car today?
Prachtige auto
Mooi! ❤️❤️❤️👍
I have a 1962 190SL. Is it fun to drive? Yes? Is it a pig? Yes. But that’s what you should expect given the size of its engine. Is it a beautiful car? Yes. I get compliments all the time. It’s just a great little car to go cruising in.
Ik wil de BMW e39 zien!
Great review of a beautiful car, thanks.
I’m just off to see if I can attract a garden gnome without legs to accompany me on a drive... 😉😀
20 years back these cars were around £15k or so. In fact a lady around the corner from me in London had a black one and wanted £14k for it. Less than a Golf GTI. But now it's 4 - 5 times a Golf GTI, I'm not so keen. Great car though.
Review de bmw z3m!
Zouden jullie misschien een review kunnen doen over de Mercedes ML 500 uit 2006? Ik ben van plan om er een aan te schaffen
Dude Produde

Anybody knows the song ?
Dutch always sounds like the speaker is drowning in phlegm....
Mercedes wilde een graantje meepikken van het succes van de 300SL?? Haha
