Great docu-study. Thank you. Very real artist problem back then between 77-79 period, was the sheer number of amazing and ground breaking records that were coming-out from week to week, a golden era kind of thing. One fresh act could be out gunned by another very quickly.
Thanks man, really enjoyed this mini-documentary. I missed the UK Punk scene by a few years, but I remember seeing their record covers in my best friend's older brother's record stack. Its great to hear about these lesser known bands from this exciting age in UK music.
This was great! I learned of the Adverts through Henry Rollins' Fanatic! book series not long ago and this really covers their story very nicely. Well done!
I only knew Gary Gilmore's Eyes from a UK punk rock compilation cd i owned. As you mentioned, Gaye ended up being the focus of the band...no wonder, i loved that goth look. Well done. Boomtown Rats might be a band to consider
I saw TV Smith years ago in my hometown. The first half was his acoustic set,the second part he played old Adverts songs with his backing Band The Garden Gang.A wonderful memory. There is a german movie called "Brennende Langeweile" with The Adverts in Wuppertal. The story is about a Fan who is in Love with Gaye, the movie is a bit boring but there are a lot of good live perfomances from their gigs and the early german punk scene in it.
The Adverts were a very underrated band. Their first album was a classic and so was their second album. They were heading into post-punk territory like Magazine or Joy Division. I don't know why there was so much negativity against it.
@@Gibbonik71 I think the replies to this sum it up: there’s always someone else I could have mentioned. Those were just the ones I thought of off the top of my head.
TV Smith headlined the punk festival I started with a friend in Hereford, England to raise money for a couple of homelessness charities. He was absolutely lovely and looked and sounded so cool. Think he's a vegan, which is probz why he didn't bloat up like a lot of old blokes do. The festival was called a Crisis of Conscience and ran for 2 years. Think he played in 2016
Dude, I normally don’t do this kind of thing but there is something in your presentation that just makes do the following: It is very nice that you know how to read, it is also very nice that you know how to use a computer and a whole array of different electronic devices, yet at the same time it doesn’t save you from being soft in the head. Reading a bunch of Wikipedia pages and then spewing them out, joined by the ever constant “I don’t know” remarks, only deepens the feeling that you have put this video (as well as some other of its kind) just as poorly executed attempt to grift. It is obvious that punk is nothing but a “subject matter” to you. Please refrain from doing this in the future and stick to subject matters you do know something about like how to flick the light switch on.
This is dope love that you focused on Gaye’s experience she’s so OG cool as hell

Great video! I was a big fan of the Adverts back then. Always wondered what happened to them. Thanks!

Could you please do one on the Flys.
Fantastic under-rated band.
Crossing the Red Sea with the adverts still holds today.

The first band I ever saw live 20/5/77.

Great introduction to live music
something a little different but history of david lynch would be rad especially considering his influence with music videos on different musicians
I'll add it to the list!
Why no mention of Poly Styrene being an original female punk icon?
Siouxsie Sioux
@@Gibbonik71 Nina Hagen !

Some of them were punk at the same time. Imagine that.
