Very interesting review of this part of Eastern Europe. I was a little surprised at the time duration for this journey until you revealed the border crossing delays encountered. The interior of the carriages of this train showed quite a kaleidoscope of decor and facilities, some of which could go down well here in Australia. You did well with the seat in which you travelled. Looks almost regal class! Thanks again for revealing a little known part of the world to me. Looking forward to next week's offering.

"Eastern Europe"?! Hungary is in *Central* Europe. Why do Westerners systematically ignore the difference between the two?

Nice ride into Romania! Indeed we have problems with catering and such because when CFR had restaurant cars, the items of food and drink were expensive so most people avoided them and brought their own things onto the train! That pentium label should give you an idea how old these cars are :)) cfr have built in the past 2-3 years some amezing coaches (blueprints from French Rail) but for other Romanian routs! if you plan on doing other Romanian trips in the future, i’d recomend you go further from Timisoara to Bucharest to see stunning scenes as the train goes next to the Danube for 1h and some other amezing sites or chech trains routs that go through the mountains, you’ll love them! Cheers!

I travelled from Vienna to Bucharest 3 years ago. At the Romanian border a restaurant car was added and it was the best train meal ever. Freshly cooked chicken with salad and a great selection of beer! But it was slow, very very slow!

Wow, the Budapest station was stunning! I'm with you, Dylan -- I'm shocked that a 16-hour long train journey would have no catering option and no couchette coach or sleeper.
Thanks for taking us along, Dylan. See you next video!

Budapest station looks great. Too bad you didn't have enough time to explore the shops and restaurants. Hungarian food is superb, been eating it most of my 74 years! The other half of my ancestry is proud of the liquid refreshments from Scotland. Can't even think about trying haggis, ewww.

The enormous arch of the Budapest East station was very impressive. This seemed to be a pleasant journey across the flat Hungarian plains and in a mostly unfilled, quiet car (until the conductor came in to play loud music on his radio. I never heard of such a thing . At least it makes the trip unique). They need to fix that food situation for a 16 hour trip.

During the war in Jugoslavia I travelled from Buchuresti Nord to Timisoara and back, on the way up there was a restaurant in the train with good quality on everything but going back there was nothing to be had at all. Going north I also met a woman of 20 who was studying to get a dentist at the university in Buchurest and when talking to me it was the first time she used her English "sharp", she left the train in Orsova and after that a ten year old girl had to try her luck with English to the man in the corner very cute.

Good to see you at this part of the world. :-) Budapest to Békéscsaba were my weekly transport route for decades. Unfortunate that route were renewed few years ago and capable of 160km/h, the trains still not enabled to run at full speed.
As you mentioned the hungarian carriage is quite modern. That is a good feeback from a travel enthousiastic like you. :-)
The Hungarian goverment decided several years ago to bring the manufacturing, planning of the carriages back to Hungary to replace the old IC carriages. After several years of iteration, licensing, the IC+ carriages family are ready with several arrangements (1st, 2nd class, bistro, restaurant, 1+ premium, mixed 1st and 2nd) already running on hungarian and international routes. 20 + 35 cars are already running, another 35 are under construction and a controller car is under development (think am OBB Railjet style controller car ;-)).

Great video Dylan - thanks. Keleti Station sure is beautiful - I think the grandeur of the train hall is partly due to it not covering many tracks - the verticality of it makes it like a real cathedral of railways! I love the retro feel of the first class carriage and the armchair seats look so comfortable. The curtain material with the railway logo is special too. Just a shame about the catering, but one can be prepared for that as you say.

Hi Dylan - I enjoyed your insight into this Hungarian/Romanian hybrid train. The architecture of Budapest East reminded me of the Gare du Nord in Paris in the 1970s. Interestingly, your footage included a glimpse of an ex-SNCF “fraise/vanille” DMU unit on the right as you pulled into Timisoara. I was surprised to see it - I thought they’d all been scrapped! They used to ply the route between Paris & Boulogne Hoverport in the 70s/80s.
Back on topic - I’d love to do this journey, but I’d go through to Bucharest. Stay safe.

Catch 22. Train catering is pricier than supermarkets, so folk bring their own unless they want a full meal mid-trip. Fewer drink and snack sales mean the price goes up or catering vanishes.
Even station shops, pricey by shop standards, undercut train catering. Behind some station shop chains lurketh a rail operator, however.
