  • How to pair the IKEA TRÅDFRI dimmer with your existing Philips Hue system to get a cheap remote control of your bulbs.
    If you have the IKEA TRÅDFRI remote or the IKEA TRÅDFRI motion sensor instead it's exactly the same recipe.
    You /may/ need to update your IKEA remote if it's using an old firmware. For that you'll need an IKEA gateway - which is not covered in this video as it is standard IKEA procedure.
    Compared to Hue control units it has both advantages and disadvantages.
    + It's cheap
    + It's basic so once setup it's easy to use for everybody
    + It doesn't take up resources on your bridge as it's just a ZigBee node on your system which the bridge is unaware of
    + It'll control your bulbs even if your Hue Bridge is turned off
    - It's not configurable from the bridge/hue or other app so no fancy things
    - Since it's talking directly to the bulbs (through the ZigBee network) it can take up to ½ a minute or so for the bridge to be aware of the bulb's new status
    Not applicable for this Trådfri dimmer as it's only on/off and dimming but applicable for the Trådfri remote:
    For the moment it seems that adjusting color temperatures and colors are only supported for IKEA bulbs - also IKEA bulbs on the Hue system. Lets hope for an update to the remote in the future.
    Made by request from a viewer of my first Hue/Trådfri control unit video "Using IKEA TRÅDFRI remote on Philips Hue system with bridge"

    PLEASE READ !! It'll answer most of your questions!
    Which firmware the dimmer has is significant as Trådfri only recently has become Hue compatible. If your dimmer hasn't got the compatible firmware out of the box you'll need an IKEA Trådfri gateway and follow their instructions on how to update the firmware.
    Also there has recently been an update to practically all Philips Hue bulbs ever made which means that they're now only open to pairing for the first 30 minutes of powering on. So have your bulb(s) been applied power for more than 30 minutes you'll need to physically cut the power and wait for 10 seconds before reapplying power - which will give you another 30 minutes to pair your bulb(s). Also I won't guarantee full compatibility with anything. The dimmers however seems to work on Trådfri bulbs paired to the Hue bridge, Philips Hue bulbs, Osram Lightify plug and Lightify bulbs although Lightify bulbs seems a bit temperamental to get paired to the dimmer.
    To pair more bulbs to the dimmer simply move the dimmer to the next bulb. If some of the bulbs are close to other smart bulbs please make sure the others are powered off as they might steal the pairing. The dimmer supports up to 10 bulbs.
    The dimmer will not be visible from the Hue app. The bridge doesn't know what it is so it'll just ignore it. It'll talk directly to the bulbs - not through the bridge like Hue control units normally do. While it has it's drawbacks it also has its strengths - you can control your bulbs even if the bridge is unpowered.
    If the bulb become unresponsive from the app then you've not succeeded. Don't panic and do NOT remove the bulb from the bridge. The bulb will become responsive again once you succeed. If for some reason (wrong dimmer firmware, patience etc.) you don't succeed and just want the bulb to become responsive in the app again then just move the bulb next to be bridge and let the bridge make a touchlink command to the bulb. The bulb will then become responsive again.
    iOS / Apple: Sorry, I don't have any Apple devices so I can't help you with that. For Windows you /may/ have luck trying WinHue 3 - I say /may/ because while it can send a touchlink command I haven't tried it (yet at least).
    You might want to read the video description as well :)

      Have you been able to test the new Trådfri Colour and white spectrum E27 bulb on your Philips Hue bridge ?

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret  6 лет назад +1

      Yes I bought it as soon as it became available locally. They work more or less as well as the white spectrum. When setting scenes via Hue app you first get color/color temperature set. Then set the same scene again and then the brightness is set too. If I don't remember wrong I think it has to to with the fade time. Default fadetime on Hue is 0.4 seconds but on Trådfri it's 0.3. I can play around a little tomorrow and see if I remember correctly. When setting something via rules you you need to set fadetime to 0.3 seconds otherwise bulbs not always behave as wanted.
      The best working bulbs on Hue is the cheapest basic 2700K only as they only has brightness to set. The worst is the panels. Not only to they have the issues of the bulbs but its more advanced power supply which is actually two internally - a big one for the panel and a small one for the receiver module - doesn't go into proper standby if using a fade time above 0.3 seconds when turning off resulting in a standby usage of 3-4 times what it should be. For the time being I've made workaround. Since I need to take into account if turned off remotely via Hue app (not just a Hue dimmer, motion sensor etc.) it resulted in a quite complex set of rules. It detects when panel is turned off (regardless by what) then turns it on just to turn it off but this time with a known fade time of 0.3 seconds - annoying. So while it mostly works there's still some quircks needing to be fixed before I'll say it works great. Usable but not optimal for everybody.

    • @Formula400Pontiac
      @Formula400Pontiac 6 лет назад

      Yes i heard rumors on this "fail to go into standby" issue that plagues the Trådfri bulbs. I think i'll wait a few more months until i get confirmed this issue and the claimed firmware problem dealing with wrong zigbee device IDs is sorted out and/or a reliable workaround is found. I run a smarthome system on a Raspberry Pi3 with Z-Wave controller addon card and have the Philips Hue connected via a software binding on the LAN. I've seen a recent post on the OpenHab forum a user having an IKEA trådfri RGB bulb being identified as a "White temperature" bulb inside the OpenHab system instead of as a "Color temperature" bulb and that will obviously prevent full control of the bulbs.

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret  6 лет назад

      I haven't found standby issues with the bulbs. They also only has one internal power supply so it always has to be on. It is an issue for the panels only.
      The Trådfri RGB bulbs are by Hue identified as color lights rather than extended color lights. Why OpenHab identify that as white temperature I have no idea about.
      Yeah. I hope too that they'll soon have these issues sorted out. I just bought the gateway too so I'm able to update my devices. Even though you might think they work fine for the moment updates can always make them better. Also things like default startup color temperature and warm white appearance can be changed. For my Osram Lightify RGBW bulbs there was a change ½ a year ago or so that made a change. Very visible while update as going on an only some had been updated.

      Is there anything special I have to do to get the Hue Lightstrip+ into pairing mode? I've updated the dimmer and it can pair with my normal Hue bulbs now but it still will not pair with my Lightstrip+ at all, no flashing from the strip or anything, I've even tried unplugging the Lightstrip+ for more than 10 seconds a few times to see if it would activate touchlink pairing mode but still no response. Hopefully you can help as this is the main light I want this dimmer to work with =/
      Edit: I figured it out (I'm an idiot..) I was unplugging the connector from the Lightstrip+ instead of the wall adapter, so the actual controller was never unplugged and put into pairing mode, once I did that I was able to pair to the dimmer puck just fine!

    I followed these instructions, and did it 5 times now. But everytime when I pair the remote to the bulb, the bulb loose connection to the hue bridge/app. What is going on?

    • @Marlow925
      @Marlow925 4 года назад

      Basically, the dimmer is not paired with the hub. Been through the same process. The best way to test this, without making a mess of your Hue system is to pair a test bulb up with your Hue bridge. Then pair the dimmer as per instructions. Once finished, pair the dimmer with the test bulb and and test if the dimmer is working on it. Next try to control it from the hue app. Turn it off and on over a timeframe of 1-2 minutes. It may not react in the beginning. If it starts reacting after that time, you're ready to pair it with other bulbs. You can reset your test bulb to take it off the dimmer again.
      If however, you don't gain control back in the app, then the dimmer didn't get paired correctly. I found the "Hue Lights" app on Apple to be the best to do it with. Hue Essentials on Android may also work.

    Thanks for the interesting video!
    Can you use the tradfry dimmer in the hue app? Or do you have to manually pair it to the bulbs?
    Usability in the app would be very nice, becaus one can operate multiple bulbs/rooms with the dimmer, right?

    Trying to pair this dimmer that came with a bulb (not by itself) to my new Hue bulbs. After reading the pinned comment about how you have to cut the power to new hue bulbs first for it to go back into pairing mode I finally was able to hold the dimmer next to the hue bulb and see it flash. I let it flash until stopping and then released the button, however spinning the dimmer doesn't do anything at all to the bulb. It must be paired on the hue hub if it flashes the light when I hold it next to it right? Any ideas?

    • @Kal-el23
      @Kal-el23 5 лет назад

      Wound up getting this to work. Basically there isn't any indicator that the dimmer has been added as a device, the only way I was able to figure out this worked was after doing what the pinned comment suggested which was to kill the electrical power to the light then turn it back on so it would go back into pairing mode. Prior to that step holding the dimmer up to the light and pressing it to attempt to pair would not work. After putting my Hue light into pairing mode it immediately started blinking and the dimmer worked.

    If you're pairing the dimmer directly with the bulb, why do you need to pair it with the bridge first?

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret  5 лет назад

      Because otherwise it wouldn't get the ZigBee network credentials from the bridge and so you wouldn't be able to control the bulb from both bridge and dimmer.

    • @NicksStuff
      @NicksStuff 5 лет назад

      Isn't it the bulb that needs to be paired with the bridge, rather than the dimmer?

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret  5 лет назад +1

      @@NicksStuff It is paired with the bridge. Since the dimmer gets the same zigbee credentials as the bulb already has then you can pair the dimmer with the bulb and be able to control bulb from both dimmer and bridge. It's not magic. It is a fundamental functionality build in to the zigbee protocol. What makes it "magic" is that you don't know the credentials as with ordinary networks and some things like bridges and remotes (dimmers) "make" their own network upon reset and they can tell other devices to join their network.

    • @HifiCentret

      It makes perfect sense in the way that the bulbs can now be controlled by both the bridge and the Ikea dimmer - not just the dimmer.

    I've followed your video, but cannot get the dimmer to pair with hue hub. Running latest firmware. Should l see the dimmer appear in hue application? Does ikea or hue bulbs need to be paired with ikea dimmer first?

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret  6 лет назад

      The dimmer will not appear in the Hue app. Bridge doesn't know what it is so it's just ignoring it. It's easier to verify success if you pair the bulbs first. By then when dimmer is paired successfully the easiest test is that bulbs is controllable by both dimmer and app. If it fails do not remove the bulb - just try to pair the dimmer again. Once it succeeds the bulb will be controllable by both dimmer and app. Should you take a break you can repair the bulb to the bridge by sending it a touchlink command. It'll then become responsive again.
      Try resetting it and leave it for a few hours or over night without then reinstall battery and once again reset it. I did have odd behavior with one of mine but apparently now it's working fine.
      Happy New Year!

      I have the same problem. This worked with an IKEA bulb connected to the Hue bridge, but now I have a Hue "White Ambience" bulb and this method initially appears to work (the Hue bulb flashes 10 times), but the dimmer does nothing after this. The bulb is still controllable through the Hue app. Guess I'm going to have to pay up for a Philips dimmer.

      Sorry I can't help with that since I don't have any Apple devices. You may or may not have luck trying WinHue for Windows but I personally haven't tried it for that. If it starts a search after touchlink it may interfere with the process to take that with a grain of salt.

Ive successfully paired the lamp with touchlink to Hue bridge, and paired the dimmer with the light, but as soon as the dimmer and bulb is paired the lamp gets unreachable in the Hue app. Ive tired aborting the pairing process in the app after the initial commands, tried repairing the dimmer with the bridge, but I cannot get anything to work. Don't know. I've never had one. But I have no reason to believe it wouldn't. As long as the app you're using to make touchlink with supports the old bridge. You can do it via the debug console on the bridge itself but that really is a hassle and so you'd probably just want to buy a slightly used gen 2 instead.
      If app doesn't support it try another instead. WinHue might be a good guess - I know it supports touchlink.
