- In this video I show you how to setup the Sonoff WiFi Smart Switch. This is a $5 smart outlet that allows you to automate pretty much any appliance. I use it with my google home mini to turn on and off all the devices in my electronics lab.

3) I have an extension cord/appliance that has three prongs (live, neutral, ground). How do I wire up the sonoff?
Any appliance or device that has a metal chassis needs the ground wire to be considered safe. Appliances that have plastic chassis are safe (in the US) with only live and neutral. If you need the ground wire, I would suggest getting the Sonoff Pow model which has three terminals to accommodate the ground wire. www.itead.cc/s....
4) I don't feel safe having to modify an extension cord. Is there a sonoff switch that I can just plug right into the wall and use?

The Sonoff can be purchased from the manufacturer's website. The price before shipping (at the time of this video) is $4.85. I believe they ship from China which may take several weeks to arrive where you live. I ordered several that took about 2 weeks to arrive in the US.

Dont leave all that copper exposed on your connections to the screw terminals on your sonoff. Make sure the insulation goes right up to the terminals to prevent it from arcing between the bare copper.

Georg, not sure what you mean but I suspect you may mean the crimp on ferrules that turn the stranded conductors to one solid length? They're not commonly used in many countries. Most of continental Europe uses them, but the UK mostly doesn't (I however like them) and I don't think the USA does either. The terminals on a Sonoff switch are fitted with leaf springs so it can clamp properly on stranded wire :)
Yes, always make the insulation butt right up against the terminal. And I also like to twist the wire and then add solder to make the wire ends solid
EL34XYZ never solder a mains wire if it gets hot the solder melts and the connection becomes dangerous

I wish I had seen this before I started my home automation. My one thought after trying 4 different switches is, it is simpler to use only one brand. Having 4 different brands means 4 different apps and different ways to integrate into Alexa. Thank You byte sized, I will have fun with a couple of these.

Thanks for watching! When you setup the sonoff with the eWeLink app you can control the switch from anywhere with an internet connection. You aren't limited to being on the same WiFi network.
I use these to control devices from another state, even with a Google Home Mini in a hotel.
yes you can. You can do it with the official app and firmware, but also after you flash yr own software on it

Excellent video...For safety reasons however, I would avoid using wifi switches to control blenders, or any sharp spinning rotating blade that can come into contact with your hand.
Or, just don't put you fingers near the blade when the jar is on the base (motor).

Nice devices. The con is that you are using a third party server that relays via china. All works... until someone decides to pull the plug on that service.
fortunately the SonOff can easily be reflashed with your own firmware. That also has the advantage that somewhere someone in China can't keep track anymore of when you use your blender

I'm going to experiment with flashing new firmware at some point in the near future.
GuruDanny open it up. Solder in a header in the ftdi slot you find and program with a 3v3 ftdi TTL adapter straight from an Arduino ide. Make sure u do not plug it in the mains while programming

Awesome video! $5 is incredible... I looked at sourcing everything and making my own PCB to do something similar, but the AC-DC power components would have been more than $5 alone. I do wish there was an app that doesn't look like it's from some 3rd party chinese company, but I guess the integration is what you pay for in the more expensive devices.
Yeah same here. The components would cost more than $5, plus PCB, plus enclosure etc. These are great! As for not using the chinese app/server, you can flash other firmware (Tasmota) which allows you to create a local server. Thanks for watching!
Sonoff is open hardware, with an FTDI cable and a broken warranty label, you can tap inside and flash your own firmware (or some pre-made firmware from other developers).

I put 4 of them in a ceiling fan so I could turn the light and fan on and off remotely. It was a tight fit, but it works to control speed and all. It was cheaper than a new fan remote (mine quit working) and DEFINITELY cheaper than a smart ceiling fan control PLUS smart light switch/bulb

like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
Has about 40 of them in the house to control outside night, wireless camera, doorbell, PIR, Intruder barrier detector, house alarm, most of the curtains etc. The Sonoff switch can has single, dual or 4-channel. They are also available in bare module in populated circuit board to be power by 5VDC, 7 to 32VDC and/or 240VAC.
Basically all Sonoff switches are controlled by eWelink App. If you have an Amazon Alexa device which is controllable by the App of the same name eWelink is one of the registered skill inside. Thus if you activate the eWelink with Amazon Alexa App it will copy the Sonoff switches data across so that you can voice-control any of them.
great device , Thanks for sharing. I have been an Electrician for the past 22 years, so I want to make a suggestion. The device is rated for 10 amps, so you need to use a chord that is rated for that amount of amps. The extension chords like you show probably isnt rated for 10 amps. size 18awg wire is rated for 10 amps, for an extra bit of safety edge I would use nothing less than 16 awg wire on this device.

What if you don't have your phone with you... and just want to use the blender...? Is there like a reset manual on off switch to this sonoff?
There is a small button on the sonoff switch that turns it on and off, independently of the app.
and also independently of internet connection.

How exactly does it communicate? Does the app on your phone send a request to some online server which then relays it to the Sonoff switch? Or is it over your local WiFi with both your phone and the switch connected to the same wifi network (like ... a wifi printer, say)? Just curious.

Great video.. I just ordered a couple. With some very minimal soldering i was able to convert my Sonoff to a dry contact instead of passing AC.
It is recommended to install ferrules on this stranded wire and also try to minimise the amount of copper showing these terminals are quite close and can sort out if you are not careful or if you trip over something like this
The command in the introduction of the video literally triggered my google home, which is right next to me.

Yeah. Try calling some with smart locks, and good old fashion answering machine. You can just tell the doors to unlock in your message, and Alexa or Google will happily comply.
Similarly one can use drop-in messaging on an echo to control a google home in the same room. So those who stuck there homes with only the latest gadgets tend to be just as vulnerable as those with the old fashioned answering machines.

does the physical light Switch need to be on? If it doesn’t, wouldn’t the toggle be out of sync? E.g when it’s on off position, it becomes on for the light

Nice informative video But.....
Not wishing to rain on anyone's parade but I didn't see any of the type approval labels one might expect to see on a relatively complex mains AC automation device. At least one or more of FCC, TUV, or CE (meaning the real one, not the false CE alternative 'China Export' label).
Also the build standard and quality control inside looks awful.
I would be seriously concerned over risk of carbon and/or dendrite tracking between high voltages between copper/solder elements, which is a different failure mode to arcing via ionised air. It's a common problem on poor pcb designs where low resistance paths develop over time and guess what? It gets hot.
Without UL qualified materials it may catch fire while you are 20 miles away playing with your phone while your neighbours call the fire engines.......!
Be safe. Use qualified components/materials or do the work yourself to verify that the design & build will satisfy your statutory regulations.
If you don't care about this then use it in a garden shed which won't burn your house down when things go wrong, which they inevitably will.

I think there is a version with CE but these sonoff devices are all tuya based which means they all run over a other chinese company. They also can pretty easy be hacked during setup, which means that you can flash some custom firmware like tasmota.
Nice Video, I also do smart home stuff and hate the prices of the equipment, so what gauge wire can you fit in those terminals? they looked a little small for 12 gauge. Looks like it should work with alexa also.
12 gauge would probably be too big, but if you're device needs 12 gauge wire it probably draws more than the 10A current rating of the sonoff switch. They make other models that can accommodate larger wire and more current.
What about an earth connection?
Polarized appliances don't require an earth or ground wire. But if you were to control something that did need a ground then you would just hard wire it around the control unit.

It's worth noting for an extra $5.50 the pro model you listed in the description can show your how much current is being used via the App. According to their website the pro model also gives you "monthly energy consumption summaries via App".

i guess you could do it if you have a push button toilet and use a switchbot at least until someone commands a flush whilst someone else is seated, then i'd imagine the switchbot would be getting flushed (or firmly placed in an orifice on the person who issued the flush command).

The Sonoff are great!
The Sonoff version that you have got a small problem though, they don't have support for earth line, as the bigger ones have. The Sonoff 10 version are better in that way. There are also versions where there are a power meter inside. And one with two relays in one.
The firmware in them are not open source, but there are some people that managed to reprogram it. Easy to install, if you DO NOT HAVE AC POWER connected when you program it. You can fry your computers USB port (if you are lucky, if not your computer and yourself). Always do it on a cold system, without hot AC power connected, and you will be fine. When the new firmware is in it, just connect it as usual.
I have stoped used the Chines web service and use the TASMOTA firmware. Then I can use the Sonoff without needing to have a working internet connection. Just my local WIFI LAN and my Mosquito MQTT server on my RPi.
Again, thanks for your feedback. I've heard good things about the TASMOTA firmware. I helped my brother in law install some new firmware on his. I haven't gotten around to doing it on mine yet.

The problem is that they weren't using neural networks to detect clapping, just some cheap amplitude peak detection circuit. Nowadays, if you wanted to, you could build a clapper that was 99.9999999% accurate at detecting claps.
Why on earth would a neural network be necessary? They haven't even created a fully functioning neural network, seems overkill to turn a light on...
Well it works in monitoring and real-time Applications as well . For that you need to have use both subscribe and publish segments of iOt . Will suggest Adafruit to manually design . Also you can use Google assistant on IFTTTT now a days.
I have tried these and Gosund SmartLife. Gosund does not make an in line switch , but the wall plug is a much better device. They are both very easy to set up, but the Sonoff is twice the size and depending on where the plug needs to be placed, can waste a wall socket. Also you can get Gosund on Amazon in two days. It took two weeks for Sonoff to arrive.
Anyone doing this project please make sure you strip the cabling just enough so the copper wire is hidden inside the captive screw terminal. If you leave the copper exposed like shown in this video you leave yourself and others at risk of electric shock and death.

If you really want to play with Sonoff units, look into Tasmota. You can flash the Sonoff firmware so it doesn't have to be directly accessed by the Internet. BYW: Sonoff now makes units that can monitor the current being drawn by the devices connected to them.

I just successfully wired a lamp in my entertainment room using one of my newly acquired Sonoff switches.I have some observations which I think will be useful to anyone contemplating ordering and using these switches.They are quite tiny and this could be a good thing if your intention is to insert them into an existing electrical box but it does create challenges.
The insertion points for the wires are tiny, in fact the device itself is tiny. This means that there is no chance you would ever get standard 12/2 Romex wire connected to this device directly. Ceiling lights and standard switches will usually be wired with this 12 gauge wire. This means you will need to create an interface to this device where the 12 gauge wire is reduced to allow for connection. I'm looking into a good way to do this and have some thoughts but it can be a problem.Standard lamp cord is 14gauge sometimes 16gauge and can be inserted only just barely. The holes are tiny and the little bitty screws tightening the connection are also tiny. I just found inexpensive connector blocks that will easily connect 12g wire to smaller and is re-useable. If you're going to do a bunch of these switches and will need to interface larger gauge wire you really want these. The way these switches are rated is puzzling to me. Voltage times amperage equals power so if they are rated to pass 10 A on 110 V circuit, that wattage would be approximately 1100 W. Yet the device itself is rated only 2200 W. I'm not sure why the discrepancy but would be very interested to understand what the real capacity of the switch is.
I have smart plugs controlling nine amp pumps in my Koi pond and they are doing fine. I don't think I would want to try using these switches on such a heavy current draw even though they do say 10A. Would really like to have a better understanding of this. Any thoughts?
I agree that the power rating is confusing. I would suggest sticking to a 10A maximum load. The relay inside is rated at 10A and won't handle much more current than that. However the relay can switch loads from 90V-250V AC. Some countries like the US use 120V and (most) other countries use 240V. The relay is still limited to 10A regardless if you're switching a 120V or 240V load.

Even the smart switch has multivoltage, please check your voltage appliances before plug it in. Step down transformer with smart switch can also useful.

The device will likely work okay with the polarity reversed. But it's standard to switch the Line wire as opposed to the neutral wire.
I would like them to add a notification when power is lost. This would make it perfect for deep freezers
Great video. If you want to measure power consumption (assuming unity power factor) you will need a current transformer or a series low resistance element plus some amplification and an A/D circuit. It's pretty easy to do. The Sonoff doesn't seem to be UL rated, so isolation won't be a must.

If you're looking to make smart power outlets, you should give the "Shelly Switch 1" a try. It doesn't get much smaller than this...
(There's also a slightly more expensive version with power monitoring functionality)
The price is significantly higher when you add shipping on the itead website. You can get them from other sources and chop that price. The itead website offers everything on one page though.
In many places (like mine) there are no neutral wire, it is just two live wires. Under most circumstances you will never know any difference and it is cheaper. Where there is a neutral, the voltage to ground may sometimes be zero, but you can never trust that to be the case. Without the neutral both wires will have full voltage to ground.
they make digital amp readers . you can attache the coil to the incoming fuse panel. they make cool 2 phanse built in volt meter digital screen. some how you need to get a reading from that screen into your phone....
These is best device to start with.
If you think of this thing as a cheap WiFi enabled relay, you can find tons of uses for it. It can be used for anything where you need to press a button. You could use the relay to close the same contacts that signals your garage door to open/close. You could use the relay to close the contacts of a mute button on a $3 universal remote. Then instead of being angry that your Apple TV can't mute your TV, you can (with the help of IFTTT) say "Okay Google Mute the TV"

Maybe you can do a video showing how to cut the mains traces going into the relay so that the relay can be used for closing other circuits. (I have a dozen coming but I am pretty terrible at finding the time to edit videos.) Great work, BTW!

You addressed 2 of 3 of these in comments... upgrade firmware, add 10 A fuse or lower, I would still find UL rated switch.
Love this! ... but it's only rated for 10 Amps and no ground. Perfect for some led lights but don't run too much though it.
Sonoff makes other models that accommodate ground and are rated for 16 Amps. Check out FAQ #3 in the description.

This looks really cool, but why is no one mentioning the lack of Ground pass-through? If you're powering devices like a blender, coffee machine, whatever, especially when it deals with fluids, you'd want it to short to ground when a wire gets pulled loose or there's a leak. Maybe put it in a casing and connect a ground wire that bypasses the Sonoff switch.
Indeed this is a good video and the concept is cool, I have watched it evolve over the years. But I would not want to connect my house to the internet for any would be hacker to take over and control. To each there own of course. Great video though!

Great way to muck up your wifi band!
Are you talking about having lots of devices connected to my network? WiFi was designed from the beginning to support lots of devices on a single network. Also the sonoff devices use little to no bandwidth most of the time. I've seen no impact on the performance of my network.
In my opionion its still better to build it yourself and here's why:
HLK-PM01 (for AC to 3.3v DC): 0,70$
CH340 (wifi module with for multiple relay output, works on 3.3v): 2,50$
10x 5V relays: 2,80$ (so arround 0,30$ each)
Wires and plugs: lets say 1$ (probably less, but lets say 1$
Total: 4,50$
Which is not only cheaper, but you dont need to install any extra app and it gives you the possibility to run up to 8 devices from the same wifi chip. So for example, if you have a lamp next to another lamp, next to your blender, you could just buy an HLK-PM01, a CH340 and 3 relays, which would sum up to 0,70+2,50+(3*0,30)+1 = 5,10$
5,10$ for running 3 different devices which would cost you 3 times more if you were buying the sonoff plugs.
The libraries and code for this are on github, just type something like "Alexa CH340"

That switch looks just like the Nexx garage door opener switch. It would even install the same. Have you ever tried to pair your switch with the Nexx garage door app?

Both them a long time ago with the RF function also they still work after 2 years but the app has some bugs from time to time and the widget has also is still the cheapest option you can get thus days...didn't know about google integration so thanks for the video i will watch more of your stuff also i heard about those light switches sonoff relased with Touch function maybe you can show those one day if you hadn't...regards ;)

Hello Zach! I have 2 questions about the product you intorduce here.. First of all, how do you know if it complies with the IP (Has nothing to do with the internet!) it shows? I can tell you, that it absolutely does not comply with the IP66 it shows. The Maximum of Protection I'd classify it at would be an IP31/41 (IP66 = Dustproof and protected against water jets from any direction, IP11 or 21 = Proof against contact by items >50 or >12 mm in diameter (hand or finger) and protected against water dripping ontop of it from a 90 degree angle) If you look at Minute 3:27 there is a massive gap between the teeth that bite into the cord and the plastic brackets around it, leaving enough space for water/dust to enter the "switch" (wireless-relay).
Next Question is: Are you sure the way you stripped the wire and put it into the contacts is the right way? I can tell you again: It would be right if the cable wasn't flexible (multiple thin copper braids) but as some people mentioned before, you'd also have to leave the insulation on the clable till you reach your connection terminal. Don't just assume the mounting hole was 10 mm and strip it that way and leave it be for good, if you stripped it too far, just cut back the wire a little... Now, if you use braided wires, use ferrules to make sure you have optimal contact.
