From Dragon Ball episode 91. Master Shen, also known as The Crane Hermit, tries to assassinate Goku in his sleep to avenge his brother, the mercenary Tao Pai Pai.
This is technically a non-canon filler scene, which you can tell because the Crane Hermit/Master Shen invented the sky dance technique, the technique used by humanoid earthlings to fly without wings or other physical means, but he doesn’t fly at all here. Makes for a cooler visual with the whole ninja schtick (which is a bit weird the longer you think about it since the crane school uniforms and fighting styles are more drawn from Chinese culture and specifically crane style kung fu than Japanese ninjutsu, as is the case with most dragon ball characters since they’re based on journey to the west, but it wouldn’t be the first time Toriyama mixed in Japanese cultural elements so that could be overlooked), but is a bit confusing in terms of the actual plot line. Granted, I don’t recall if this scene was before or after showing chiaotzu and tien fly for the first time, so maybe they just wanted to keep the flying thing a surprise? Still a bit silly though, sir you don’t need a rope to propel off that roof, just glide down and stop being a dramatic weeb. EDIT: alright fine y’all got me on the ki usage thing lol.
Honestly this could perfectly line up with the canon of dragon ball if we excuse Shen’s absent of the flying technique as a way to not attract any attention. Sure flying would be more stealthier but for all we know flying could have altered Roshi quicker by simply sensing his ki possible from the use of the technique since it does require ki control to use.
@@retroskeleton891 yeah I could see there being some justification for it, but ki sensing wasn’t an established ability at this point. Not to say Shen would have no reason to be cautious just by virtue of knowing Roshi was there as well, it just feels odd with the rest of the arc’s set up. Honestly kinda wish the event had happened in canon just because that would probably get us a real fight scene out of it, which would be pretty cool because we don’t know too much on Shen besides the fact either he or Tao invented the dodon ray along with a few other extremely powerful ki techniques, and may be some of the last people to actually know the tri-beam/kikoho. I think a fight between Shen and Goku or Shen and Roshi would’ve been interesting and not having it is a bit of a waste, just like I also think Roshi getting rid of Shen while he was distracted was a wasted potential when king Piccolo makes himself known immediately after the tournament. Since Shen and Roshi are the only two surviving students of Mutaito and were part of the original fight against king Piccolo, it would have been a good opportunity to force them to end their rivalry, even if temporarily, and join forces against their common enemy. Idk, I think Shen and Tao are some of the most wasted potentials out of any characters in the series just because they made a counterpart of and rival to Roshi but never really dug deeper into that. It’s kind of like how I feel about Raditz, the gave goku a brother and just didn’t care to expand on that premise? Idk, I always wished we saw more of them, and I DEFINITELY wish we saw more of Tao beyond him just quickly falling into a gag where he’s scared of goku and can get one shot by any given Saiyan. Tao was a prodigy martial artist who got turned into a cyborg, sure he’s never gonna be able to catch up to goku because goku is just destined to be OP, but if they were gonna bring him back the way they did, they could’ve stood to make him pose a greater threat to other characters because otherwise it’s just an early version of how dirty golden Frieza is done. Cyborg Frieza getting bodied by future trunks was interesting because it introduced a new character and showed immediately where he stood in terms of raw power, but Cyborg Tao and Golden Frieza didn’t really add to anything because they were talked up as being multitudes more powerful than they were before, and it’s a good set up to get the audience excited about the return of a popular villain in a new form. Making them a non-threat to the already established main characters is just a bit boring because why bother even bringing them back at all? Sorry this got way too long, I have a lot of strong feelings about wasted potential with dragon ball characters and dragon ball just generally moving away from victory going to the one with the best technique and instead just immediately being a win for whichever Saiyan is around that day by virtue of their beam attack being stronger than the villain’s. The solution to every villain slowly becoming “goku got a new transformation and a power level of ten billion now” stopped being rewarding after cell imo. Just kinda no stakes.
@@Chugargonfan it was like one episode away from Chiaotzu and Tien flying so I kinda doubt that. Tao couldn’t fly because he’s a petty bastard and doesn’t get along with Shen or like actually learning from him because Tao thought he already had everything figured out. He used pillars and such to get around likely just to prove he was self sufficient and didn’t need to rely on his brother’s technique, that’s probably also why he’s more sparing with the dodon ray in combat and only resorted to it when goku destroyed his outfit and later when he was starting to get pushed into a corner by goku in their second fight.
@@TakkuriHimare Well flying (at this point) seems to cost a large amount of power. When Tien lifted Goku out of King Piccolos attack later in the story, it did cost him all he had left. So maybe Shen was just preserving his energy, as long as he didnt get any advantage of his flying ability, using it more as a trump card.

@@TakkuriHimareHonestly that’s pretty true. Considering this guy is on the same level of skill of Master Roshi then Goku would have a tuff time fighting him since his actively going for the kill unlike Roshi.
@@retroskeleton891 yeah and crane isn’t really the kind of guy to play fair either. It would’ve probably been a cool fight and having goku go up against the brother of the assassin he (accidentally) killed would’ve also just been a cool character development moment. Like maybe goku didn’t fully realize the greater implications and consequences of killing bad people because he didn’t conceptualize the idea that those bad people are still people with families and loved ones who would be hurt by it, it would also be a great way to confront crane on his hypocrisy being that he and Tao have killed countless people for profit or convenience themselves without caring who is left behind but are (understandably) still devastated by one of their own being killed in self defense. I feel like it would make a bit more narrative sense to try to redeem crane in the long run just because he has a lot of backstory related to the events of the piccolo sagas and he and Roshi would have an immediate common enemy. Honestly Shen may have even just let it go if they told him about the dragon balls being able to bring Tao back, then a nice surprise that Tao wasn’t even dead and could also at least temporarily team up with goku to help resolve piccolo’s revival. Like yeah it’s weird to redeem murderers and all that, but goku becomes best friends with Tien, Piccolo, and Vegeta anyway, all of which fully and enthusiastically killed people. Goku even gives Frieza a chance, it wouldn’t be out of step with dragon ball’s story telling imo. It’s just forever weird to me that Shen isn’t involved with the fight against king piccolo when the narrative mentions repeatedly how he and Roshi fought against piccolo together back in the day. A missed set up.
Master Shen's power level is around 125. Goku here is about 150-180 so yes goku is technically stronger then master shen in this scene but shen is still strong enough to give goku a hard time and he can also fly.

@@danielperoverde1998 it would really depend tbh. Having to deal with goku AND krillin would have probably done Shen in, but if it was 1v1 it would probably be a lot closer. @@TakkuriHimare well damn😅 but i was thinking about that
Huh, so you're telling be Tien's third eye used to move and work like a normal eye in classic DB, but in DBZ it just became static like it was a tatoo or something?
@@jackson3475 yep. He doesn’t move it very much in dragon ball either, but it’s always been a real eye. He can move all three eyes independently from each other which he uses in combat to keep track of fast opponents or anyone using the afterimage technique. It’s kinda creepy to watch him do that but hey if it works it works I guess. He never really blinks his third eye and it mainly just stares straight ahead unless he’s really invested in something. When he sleeps his third eye keeps watch to keep him from being ambushed.
Keeping track of fast opponents would have came in handy against Nappa or Cell kinda but, that’s more blamed on power creep.
@@stephvondames6369 tbf tien had second form cell pretty handled with his kikoho lmao. Didn’t last just because that’s a technique that kills you a little more every time it’s used, but he did pretty crazy with that for what his power was at that point relative to Cell. I personally have always stood by the fact Piccolo and Tien should’ve been able to last at least a little longer against Nappa and do some real damage before goku got there, but toriyama wanted there to be hard stakes and deaths reminiscent of the king piccolo arc.
@@TakkuriHimarein db goku exposed a weakness of the extra eye and relying on his vision. In dbz and tail end of db they learned to sense energy which is better than using your eyes sooo yeah.
Do you think this scene is a reference to the movie Spiritual Kung Fu? The show and manga have made Jackie Chan references before, and this is a similar set up, a martial artist thinking somebody killed their family member, dreassing as a ninja, sneaking up on them while sleeping/meditation, and trying to kill them as revenge, only to be stopped and talked down.

Master crane is no match for kid goku
@@Farmerb1985 at this specific part of the story I don’t think it would be very easy for goku. Crane is about as skilled and powerful as Roshi, who goku would struggle to best at this point of the story. Goku would’ve probably won this one because krillin was there to back him up, but if Tien had decided to back Crane, it’d be over for those kiddos.
@@TakkuriHimare so true

@@justinw7323 honestly his training with korin basically gave him an early form of UE. That’s how he defeated Tao, using the same principle of sensing his opponent’s moves before they happen and reacting automatically. It’s probably why in the context of this scene he rolls over when he does.
I really wonder if Goku would have defeated Shen back then.
Well, remember he did beat Toa, and was basically past roshi at this point. I think he would have won. Tien was stronger than crane, and goku stronger than roshi. He would have won most likely. The only thing is the old masters got trickery, so who knows honestly tho. 😂
@@danielperoverde1998 it would really depend tbh. Having to deal with goku AND krillin would have probably done Shen in, but if it was 1v1 it would probably be a lot closer. Shen isn’t THAT much less strong than goku, and his fighting style is based on pressure points and dodging/redirecting attacks less than it’s about physical strength. If he could immobilize goku just long enough to use the kikoho I think it’s curtains for little baby goku here. The dub is so weirdly put together
Yeah this one was dubbed in 2004 I think? Somewhere in that era, dubbing companies didn’t really take themselves too seriously until a few years later. The dub of the original dragon ball came out almost 20 years after DBZ was dubbed and I think they used the same Funi actors for both and there didn’t seem to be that much direction. It’s kinda fun though, definitely just something you just get used to after a few episodes.
