Thanks for the memories. I was stationed there in 1990 and remember that. It's nice to see video of what it was like when CG personnel and autos roamed the island, the way I remember it. I had forgotten that there were BEQ above the infirmary. The innocent days when the public could stroll a military base in NYC!!! I used to love to watch the skyline at night from the bench at the island's north edge (near the castle / prison).

I got to spend nearly 3 years on Governor's Island from 1969-72, I loved that place and the US Coast Guard. Got to go on patrol on the Coast Guard Cutter Dallas for 90 days near the end of my enlistment, they called the sea duty Ocean Station Echo and I did hate that. If I had reupped it was going to be a couple years on a white cutter on Ocean Station right off so I went home instead. The Coast Guard discontinued Ocean Station Duty six months later on 04/03/1973.

I went to Yeoman 'A' School on Governor's Island from 11/71 - 3/72. Great memories...so much fun having a safe haven to return to after a night in the city.

You publish a video in 2008 that you shot in 1990 and I am adding a comment in 2017. I've been a NYer for 65 yrs and finally got to the Island in August. Of course it's a public park now, but I see streets that I walked down that have no cars, and ferry slips that are identical except the CG name is no longer there. I shot a video for RUclips so I wanted to see ones from other people and other times. I made sure to a a thumbs up for parts 1 and 2. Have posted videos in 4:3 like this one and now 16:9 it is astounding to see how much different the resolution and coloration are from then to now. Good job on both parts.

Miss GI so much. Last time I was there was shopping at the PX in 1993 while with the active Navy. A shame they had to shut it down. Thanks very much for sharing the memories with others. :)

Ah, the sights and sounds. What's missing is the smells - the creosote from the pilings, the salt air, the car exhaust on the ferry. And the sounds of sirens in the city, and helicopters always buzzing about. Winter wind whipping down the Hudson in the winter. Resident, 1970--71 and 1981-83. Good times, good times.
