Welcome aboard!
I have that exact same kit. Been in the stash waiting for a day I feel like doing an all black paint job
Yeah, doing an all black paint job can be both challenging and fun, but you definitely need to be in the mood for it.
One of the greatest model kit from Academy.. my first build was in 1999, then bought 6 kits of same.. then the seller stopped business.. and amazingly I found the grandson of that same seller last month, and he offered some of those kits to me for very less price.. so received many kits last week, alongwith b 377 clipper, Blackhawk in 1 35 scale, 7 P 38s, 6 F111, 3, PBY Catalina, and lots of tanks and aircrafts.. I came so excited and sad.. years passed.. boxes were worn and dirty.. but everything inside is intact.. million thanks for the review..
Awesome, I wish you success in your builds! Even dirty boxes can yield good models!
Do you know if this is the same moulding as the new 80th anniversary Catalina kit Academy issued last year?
@@jameslarosa2396 According to scalemates.com yes, they are the same moulding, or at least most of it.
Fortunately received one more same kit but with a different kit number.. kit number 2122.. was thinking to make a rescue diorama to place at the entrance of model museum.. but when I starts to work.. feel sad, that I am going to loose the model kit.. so I opens the kit, smell the great smell of the box.. then places back on rack.. so I am sure that I will find an other same kit near future..
@@HammerheadModelMaking Thanks
I built it it’s a smashing kit it’s amazing
Good to know, thanks for sharing!
@@HammerheadModelMaking it’s being displayed on my roof can you make a build video of this
@@Cheesetaxlord3 Yes, I will do a full build video when I get to it.
I just finished this kit. Didn't have the rubber tires in my box, but otherwise it went together well. The fuselage joint above the observation blisters was a problematic area to align. I ended up making it gear/floats up in flight and hanging it in my shop at work. The wheels will need to be significantly spaced out in the gear bays since they're so deep if you do gear up! Some sprue spacers were enough though, but definitely check the fit before committing. Also it's pretty easy to build it with the nose gear doors closed and the aft lower gun bay shut if that's your intention.
Hey, thanks for the heads up on the kit, I appreciate it. I'm contemplating on doing it wheels up in a water diorama. But, since I've never really done one of those, we'll see how it goes.
I have John Alec's to thank for convincing me to get the standard colored Pby-5a. Nice cheap (~$20) kit. Same decent details, just in gray. Grabbed it to help fill out for free shipping deal. When I got it in, and looked it over, went to add it to the stash. Low and behold, stuffed in pile of oddball stuff was this kit, the Pby-5a "Black Cat". LoL. Must have gotten it from local shop while back and put it off to the side. Oh well, now I can eventually build them both and put them on the display shelves side by side or something. Like you described, not bad kits, just not great. For the price, pretty decent value. Enjoy yours 👍☕🐢
Awesome, its always fun to find surprises in the stash! And you can never go wrong with two PBYs!
This is a fun kit to build! The cockpit doesn't have much detail (the crew seats are "silly"!), but you can't see it so it's not that big of a deal to me. I used aftermarket decals. I have a build series of this kit on my channel if you would like to check it out. Have fun!!
Thanks, I'll be sure to check out your videos!
Dumb question, did you cut out the insignia on the decal sheet or did it come like that?
I bought the kit second hand, so the decal came like that. The cutout insignia is in the box, so nothing is missing.
Eduard do a Big Ed set for this which includes internal, external and masks.
Good to know! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the info. I've been thinking about getting this kit for a while. Your video helped make up my mind. Just a quick question. Any recommendations on a good 48 scale corsair? Thanks.
Glad I could be helpful. As for 1/48 corsairs, I haven't built one in a while, but Academy makes a few decent corsairs and Tamiya has one as well that is very good. You couldn't go wrong with either of those brands.
@@HammerheadModelMaking Thank you for the answer and your time.
@@robertjensen1438 You're welcome!
@@ChinceMcMahon316 Thanks for the info. The bit about the wings was really helpful.
@@ChinceMcMahon316 Nice, thanks for suggesting another option!
Hmmm, looks like some masks may be in order for this kit!
This kit would absolutely benefit from masks! Lots of little windows!
This kit older than me
Ha ha, I've built a few kits older than me, its bound to happen!
