Based on being able to add to a RAID on QTS, QTS is the more flexible. Is there a QTS VS QTS Hero video?

Hi, I want to buy the QNAP TL- D800C and use it as a DAS. Does Window support the expand storage pool wizard?

I had a quite interesting problem today while working with my qnap, I have two disks in RAID 1 configuration and when I ran out if space on those, I wanted to add another one and go for RAID 5 configuration exactly as shown in the video. The problem I faced was that the disk pretty much immediately assigned itself with the existing RAID group and now it shows me that I have a RAID 1 group consisting of 3 disks, even though I haven't done anything of the sort, and now I cannot add this disk manually to go for RAID 5 config and rebuild it. Idk how abstract is this kind of event but I guess my question would be... how can I remove this third disk from this group and make sure it is added freshly so that I could proceed with normal RAID 1 to RAID 5 expansion?

Hi, Thanks for the video. However, when i add the new disks into the raid, i just get a notification that says Raid expansion has started and cannot see anything in the background tasks. Do i have to stop all the services while updating the raid ? Can you tell me please ?

I'm looking into getting my first NAS (likely the h973AX) and from what I understand, you can't add a new disk to an existing RAID group on QuTS Hero devices? So it's best practice to buy all the drives that you're going to need upfront and fully populate the bays, or is there a logical workaround for adding drives to a RAID later? I appreciate the advice.

Hi there, I want to extend my RAID 5 (3x8 TB) with 1 drive of 12 TB. Is it possible to mix and match drives with different storage capacity?

What is the reason for RAID expansion by adding disk(s) not being available on QuTS Hero? Will this maybe be available in the future, or are there technical reasons that makes it impossible?

Hi, quick Q: If my QNAP NAS failed, how can I connect its drives to a Windows system? what tools do I need for Windows to recognize QTS volume? PLEASE advise, THANKS!

I have a 6 bay QNAP with RAID6 with 5 HDDs. If I expand the volume to 6 HDDs and one fails, will the RAID6 be degraded until the failed disk is replaced or can the RAID6 function normally with 5 HDDs if it has already been a 6 HDD volume?

To start, please up your volume to a similar level as of your QNAP intro.
Second, I have added 2 new drives making a total of 5 drives in my NAS and when I go to expand pool it only shows the option to "create and add a new raid group". Is there something I'm missing?
My setup is a TVS-h1288x. The drives are all the exact same. I have a RAID 5 with 3 of the 5 drives and I would like to expand that pool to include the 2 new drives.
    Thanks for any feedback.

So the same procedure would apply to a raid 5 or 6 if I am not mistaken?

Yes you always start of my managing your pool/volume, choosing the expand option, pick the option that best suits your needs.

Hi. Will you be able to both read AND write data during the RAID1 > RAID 5 migration? Asking as the migration might take days for larger drives. The docs say the data will be accessible but that doesn't imply it will be writeable.

    • @colebq
      @colebq 2 года назад

@@QNAPUK Thanks for providing valuable info. I was under the impression the data would be read-only. I hope that applies to the older QTS versions as well, like 4.3.4.

  • @insidechocolatewithjimothy5313

Great video. I thought I read on the forums that it wasn't possible to add disks from the tr004 to an existing raid 5 ( Mine is the ts-453 bt3 )
So am I understanding this correctly? if so was the feature enabled only recently?
Assuming this first part is true, if I was to add 4 identical drives inside the tr004 to my existing raid 5 on the bt3 ( also identical so 8 x 4tb drives in total ) would my read and write speed increase accordingly much like having 8 drives in a single qnap unit?
    Cheers.

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  Год назад

You cannot use the TR-004 to expand the RAID already created in a NAS unfortunately, only our TL-R1220Sep-RP and TL-R1620Sep-RP can expand the RAID inside the NAS so you have a larger volume/pool rather than another volume/pool.

@@QNAPUK Thanks so much it's great to find definite answers on this topic.
Does that mean that a single fresh raid also cannot be created across the 2 units mentioned. I assume the answer is also yes.
I am getting what seems to be terrible speeds 80MB/s r&w from thunderbolt in windows 11 in a video lun.
      Sometimes mapped drives work better
60-80 write and sometimes 500mb/s read.
( other times like now only 60 read)
I have mucked this thing on and off since I bought it ( 3 years ago) and I have not being able to make it do what I hoped it would, which is 4k editing across a network.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

That's right... if you have a brand new NAS, with a TR-004 attached, you will have to create a RAID/Pool/Volume in the NAS and the same on a TR-004, they will be separate, so you can create a share/iSCSI LUN, it will ask which Storage Pool you want it to be in... Pool1 is normally in the NAS, Pool2 will be the TR-004 in this example.
Poor speeds is often a driver mismatch with Thunderbolt. We see it mostly on Mac's, as a rule we recommend QTS 4.5.4 for Intel based Mac's, QTS 5 for Apple Silicon... if you have your NAS on QTS 5, perhaps try QTS 4.5.4 as it contains a different driver for Thunderbolt that might be more compatible with what you're running in Windows. We have to pick 1 driver version or another, cannot run multiple... so until Intel (the company responsible for Thunderbolt) sorts out the mismatch problem there is little we can do to fix it ourselves. Perhaps attempt an older driver (if you're running the latest) for your Thunderbolt on Windows.

I have done the roll back to the only 4.5.4 listed on the compatibility website.
read speed is still pretty slow with Windows.(90 MB/s) network share.
i have found articles of older compatible releases, but cannot find a link to download any of them, Do you have any idea where i could look?

Hi QNAP / Craig, great video, plz do more like this.
I have a 4 bay QNAP with 2x8TB hdd Legacy volume and want to do the following:
    Add 2 x 12TB hdd
    create Storage pool with 2 x 12TB
Expand Storage pool with 1x 8TB hdd (split the RAID 1 on Legacy Volume) --> RAID 5
Move data from the last 8TB to Storage pool
Add last 1x8TB hdd to storage pool (removing the original Legacy volume)
I want to do this without loosing data, without having to reset NAS from scratch and build all shares, users, APPs etc.
I have all data backed up on other hdd's.
Do you have a guide/Video on how to do this?

@@QNAPUK thx, it shows how to migrate from Raid 1 to Raid 5, but not how to do it on a 4 bay NAS with legacy volume using bay 1+2 and new storage pool using bay 3+4.
Can I remove ie hdd in bay 2 and add it to storage pool in bay 3+4 then becoming Raid 1 storage pool with hdd in bay 2+3+4?
Afterwards copy data from Raid1 in bay 1? OR make storage pool Raid 5 and then copy data from Raid1 bay 1?
Then add hdd in bay 1 to storage pool (then including all )
Finally, can this be done with out having to recreate all users, settings etc?
is there a way to migrate all settings, users, shares from Legacy volume in bay1 (1 hdd) and to the storage pool (3 x hdd in bay 2+3+4 ref above procedure)?

    • @QNAPUK

You cannot insert a disk into a QNAP and keep the data that is on it unfortunately, we have to prepare for use with our OS which means erasing it unfortunately.

No not at all, you won't even lose access to it during the expansion.
