West Africans (not broaden our considerations too widely... :) made music in made modes, traditions and manners, in differing contexts, with divergent social and aesthetic aims, to distinct artistic ends... and still do.... What does, i concur, strike one is that in a particular, external, discourse, for a time, that diversity and richness seems interestedly ignored, unexamined and denied.
Back in the day, Mansa Musa had more gold than the whole of Europe combined. Instead of using it to wage war and conquer as the European kings were doing, he spent it improving the lives of his people. I wish modern African rulers would follow in his footsteps

When I was young I had fluent French and, living in New York, heard West African poets read. One of my great regrets is that I never learned to dance the highlife. By sheer chance I've found this recording and I feel gloriously welcomed back to my youth.

I totally agree! Having ancestry from Mali is beautiful. Enslaved Bambara, Mandinka, and Fula from Mali and Guinea made up almost 1/3 of all the enslaved African Americans. It’s a big part of our lineage and I’m working hard to reconnect with it 💙☺️🤗
On what basis have you decided this? It's fine to be an optimist, but becoming a better person requires more than listening to music. A world that "seems like" a better place is only so within your mind. I think more reflection and some work may be required to achieve your goals.

Par rapport à l'appropriation, la musique n'a pas de propriétaire, elle est libre d'aller ou elle veut, ni les françaises se sont appropriés du jazz manouche, ni les portugais se sont appropriés du fado, et les meilleurs interpreterurs de Mozart sont en Asie.
