    People often seem upset that Aragorn told Theoden not to kill Grima, but there's a lot of reasons for it. It's mostly a matter of law- Grima didn't actually break any. So if the previously senile & mentally unsound king just got up & killed his top advisor, instead of inspiring loyalty it would give the impression that he had lost his mind. The default punishment for his treason would probably be banishment, the same as Eomer. So it makes sense that he would immediately try to flee when he got the chance, before they could imprison him. Grima is very unlikable & cowardly, but his hope was that he could rule Rohan as an ally of Saruman to avoid a real war with him. I always thought that in some ways he is a tragic character, his greed & lust for power ironically making him all the more subservient to it. He's not even really a villain, just a greedy political advisor who was scared of Saruman, so he did what he said

    • @viyctoriyareacts
      @viyctoriyareacts  3 месяца назад +5

      Yes, but I still feel like when you're at war, this is a really bad move, that gives the enemy a huge advantage. I would have at least kept him imprisoned, so he doesn't go blabbing about Rohan's weaknesses 🤔

    • @bitterzombie
      @bitterzombie 3 месяца назад +1

      @@viyctoriyareactsyou are definitely right, even if exile was the typical action that would be taken, in this context imprisonment would have been more appropriate. The best explanation I have is that Grima knew that too, so he made good on his escape before he could be taken into custody. Theoden had just come out of his coma, so he didnt really understand how much had happened or how much Grima was responsible for- he wasn't yet aware that his son was dead, that Eomer has been exiled, or even that Saruman had already started an invasion. If he had that information, he might have had a better understanding of the situation & been able to charge Grima with actual crimes like treason/conspiracy. Grima probably knew that would happen if he waited, so he immediately fled the country. Its frustrating, but the reason it is Aragorn who tells him to let him go is because he understands that the role of a king is still to uphold the law, not to hold himself above it. It may seem naive or ineffective, but it's those same rules that protect innocent people too, so it's important for a ruler to adhere to the rule of law. If "Because I am the King" was an acceptable explanation for any behavior, Saruman could have used his power over him to do even more damage to Rohan, so from that perspective it's a good thing there's due process there.

      @@bitterzombie On top of that, Aragorn as the oldest one there with his 87 years saw maybe both of them growing up as little kids, so he couldnt stand having those rascals killing each other in a fit of rage, and wanted to give Grima a chance to reform his bad ways...

    35:50 I think it’s around here, but maybe it’s only in some versions of the film. In the book, Tolkien included the thoughts about the dead enemy, and the corpses in the swamp seen earlier, because of his own experiences as a soldier in the First World War. If I remember correctly, Tolkien said he killed a German soldier but spent some time afterwards wondering how different he was from the dead man, and when that dead soldier had even come to fight by choice or if he was forced to

    Sometimes you have to work with what you got and make the best of it. Job well done.
    Heh, if I had one criticism about your commentary it would be that you stop the movie to ask a question and I laugh because I it will be answered in the next 10 seconds.
    I see a lot of reviewers who agree that Theoden should have killed Grima as Grima was being thrown out of Edoras. Cinematically, I believe that it was to show the nobility of Aragorn, we are seeing his transformation from a backwoods ranger to a noble king. He still has a part to play in the movie.
    However, the movie does change this scene a bit. They don't change it drastically, but enough that I noticed it, especially since it is my favorite scene in the trilogy. It really stuck with me when I read them for the first time as a kid. When Grima is found out, he escapes and flees the halls. Tolkien then wrote how a guard ran and got water in his helm and syaryed washing the very steps that Grima has touched while escaping.
    I do wish they had played up the colors of the Wizards a bit more. I can see why they didn't though. It would have been hard to introduce the idea without sounding like a lecture. But Saruman has changed himself from Saruman the White to Saruman of the Many Colors. This would have made the freeing of Theoden that much more poignant when Gandalf throughs his grey cloak away and reveals his new color to Saruman.
    Anyway, keep up the good work, I am enjoying the story once again. And may you turn into a reader of Tolkien as well.

      I knowww sometimes I pause, ask a question and feel dumb when they answering two seconds later lol 😂😅
      The way the situation with Grima was written in the book seems more easy to understand than in the movie

    • @ogrestamp
      @ogrestamp 3 месяца назад +1

      @@viyctoriyareacts I agree. What made this and epic tale when I first read them was the fact that violence wasn't always the first answer to things. That somehow made the stories stand taller in my mind when I read them. It would be easy just to say kill Grima, kill Gollum or kill Boromir (😮). But Tolkien deals with complex issues which are not easily handled with just simple solutions.

    Ma pean ütlema et kogu see saaga on lihtsalt hinge ja vaimu kosutav märkimisväärsus ise. Ja kõige huvitavam ongi gollum, kes oma rumalusest sattus sõrmuse mõju alla ja muutus selliseks nagu ta on. Väga halb saatus ühele ja kõigile, kes selle mõju all on. Tolien tegi igatahes ühe huvitava teose ja nad järgivad peaaegu kõike mis raamatus on.
    Samahästi oleks jäänud teised osad erimeelsuste õhtu tegemata ja poleks me nii õnnelikud
