  • When in a real fight situation it is always good to know what BJJ moves work best and which moves are more limited to a sport situation. In this analysis we find that our the BJJ practitioner learns the hard way that some moves are best left for a sports setting. But does that make sport Jiu-Jitsu a bad thing? Not at all I do plenty of sport BJJ and I believe its the best way to get in a lot of practice. However its very important to test you BJJ in an MMA setting which is the safest way to simulate an actual fight. When experimenting with your BJJ in an MMA setting you will learn to strengths and weakness of your BJJ. Be sure to be honest with yourself and make the needed adjustments to help improve your game. Most importantly be sure to develop a game that is "Universal". Universal BJJ is BJJ that works in every situation. In my book that is the best kind of BJJ.

Street fights are always interesting in that people are ok with guys knocking each other out. But as soon as you lock up a joint or a choke everyone wants to step in and stop the fight.

Most street fights are like that when both or one side has a group with them. It's perfectly OK to knock you out cold onto concrete and possibly kill you, but kicks get will get you called a pussy and anything else than blasting bare fist on the face is "not a real fight". There is one exception to the rule. Once you knock someone out your buddies will let you land 1-2 soccer kicks to the head before intervening.

    • @tmass1

no dude that's fair. It's a street fight with people watching over not letting anyone get seriously fucked up. That's the best case scenario if anything. I wouldn't complain here whether I was the winner or loser. Imagine if one guy was getting his head kicked in. Same thing. You want people to stop it.

I think it's possible the Jiu-jitsu practitioner didn't go for a proper mount because he didn't want his knees to press against the street. Also, I think he's very lucky. Gone are the days of one-on-one pride/honor battles (e.g., Rickson Gracie versus Hugo Duarte on the beach). Nowadays, young men tend to fight in "packs." They'll let their buddy go one-on-one until they sense their buddy no longer has the upper-hand, and then they'll intervene. Sometimes they won't be so gentle when they intervene. Sometimes they'll just start skull stomping or kicking ribs.
I'm all for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, especially the "sport" aspect of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, but I feel practitioners should be more aware of our art's limitations. It's probably best to calm everyone down and avoid fighting if you can, especially when you're outnumbered. You probably shouldn't fight in the middle of traffic too, but I digress.

Had the groups been reversed and it was a white guy throwing that arm lock on a black guy his black buddies would have stomped his head in.. Only Boomer white dudes still honor the one on one code and only intervened to break it up.

Such a great art form. Thank you for breaking it down for the novice. I would have hooked my hand over the side of the guys knee for sure. Glad the two walked away and no one got hurt. Mission accomplished in my opinion for the practitioner who was on the ground most of the time. I know we all would love to see him snap the other guys arm like a chicken bone and this is why I love this martial art form because a person can protect oneself and no one gets seriously hurt.

if he's too big you can't keep him down with pressure and technique, you just gotta keep riding him, surfing him. predict or force his movements, move to side control, go from side to side and back into mount, frustrate him, keep him moving and tire him out and try to get him to give his back. but if he's got 20/30 pounds on you (and some basic skill) trying to cling on to mount will be a losing play, he'll just bench press you off
also, the guy in this vid is like a 3 month white belt at best. terrible display, embarrassing. and what was to stop him raining some elbows down while he had mount. it was a goddamn fight!

@@ijustwannaleaveacommentony6511 if you're getting bench pressed off of mount then you have zero technique. First, basic technique nullifies simple bench press pretty well. Second if someone bench presses you and you dont break off an arm then youre not doing jiu jitsu.
Theres absolutely no way this guy is 3 month white belt. You dont learn deep half and spider guard through your first 3 months of bjj. You learn trap and roll. Knee escapes. Maybe a collar choke or rear naked choke. Not spider guard to pendulum sweep. Hell white belts can hard keep closed guard together.

With that in mind some people would kill the guy to be on the safe side. They mind think, "Well what if I let him go then he goes home gets a gun finds me and kills me?". That happens a lot. I prefer open Guard or Clamp Guard personally. I think that DHG is too risky for my style. I do use DHG but only in specific situation. The number one question I always ask myself when selecting a technique is "will this technique work on everyone and in any situation?" If the answer is yes then I work it day and night. Would you go deep had Guard on Rampage? I wouldn't.

Tristar Gym thanks a lot, DHG is definitly not my first choice either, then again it would always depend on the situation i guess

Those big white sneakers a perfect for a heel hook... especially at around 3:40 when the streetfighter was standing up in a perfect position for the BJJ guy to wrap his legs around one of the streetfighters for a sweep or a knee reap into a heel hook. Yeah they said no locks and a heel hook can fuck your life up... but fuck it.... its a streetfight, anything goes.

Just some advice: when you have mount, don't with hook your feet on the shins because you can injure your knees (try it, you will feel a lot of pressure on your knees when the bottom person tries to escape), instead just bend your legs backwards so your shins are up off the ground behind the opponents knees and point your toes up in diagonals towards the sky. This is a better way to hook and maintain mount (no offence, you are much more intelligent than me. Just some advice to stay safer)

Fighting on a public street with traffic going on around you must be one of the most stupid ideas you could ever have in your life. If you want to fight, go to a gym or at least go to a place where there is grass or dirt. Sometimes I really don't understand why people do what they do.

Deep 1/2 for the street or MMA is suicide. How often do you see guys get knocked out from there? Seems very common.

Demian Maia was the king of using half guard to advance position while absorbing minimal damage. The key is to advance the position, not get stuck in front of the top guy raining down strikes. Either you get right underneath & sweep or get right away from the guy

To me, this is the major problem with training Jiu Jitsu for competition FIRST. I know many schools focus on tournament-style techniques BEFORE basic self-defense Jiu Jitsu-the ORIGINAL purpose of this style.

The BJJ neutralized him. He didn’t hurt him but he stopped him from dishing out damage. The guy didn’t land a single punch because BJJ guy was fully underneath him. He did well in my opinion

Yes for a street fight this was very well executed. It's easy for the dude behind the screen to talk when he wasnt in the exact situation.

do you ever get any of the fighters to put the gi on for a roll every now and then?

    • @CoachZahabi
      @CoachZahabi  9 лет назад +8

tricepsish Yes I do. I think its important to do gi but not crucial. I actually believe starting with no gi or having no gi as your base is better then having the gi as your base. I see the gi as an additional weapon but I don't base my game on it since it may not be there.

In my years on the mat I was never interested in gi chokes like the Ezekiel choke because of this reason. and other Techniques relying on the Gi as I didn’t see those “Gi techniques” translating over to real life self defense. Even though I trained both Gi and no Gi every time when training the Gi I didn’t want to rely on the Gi in assisting.

Dylan Caldwell Ezekiel choke isn’t a go choke at all brother. You can use it with similar arm positions as RNC. Works beautifully and very effective 👍

Also, this is why training competition bjj isn’t enough. In my opinion. Just like any other fighter, train a stand up/ striking discipline as well. It should’ve been second nature for him to throw strikes from his mounted position. Also..position before submission. That is all.

Street fights are potentially life or death situation. Its either me or him.If his shoulder has rip to save myself, then so be it.
I've seen one too many fights where a guy has been slammed on his head in concrete.
    Not gonna take that risk.
Disable him and come out safe.
