    I used to think samus killing a whole species in one go was ridiculous, but you have to remember that the metroid were not a native species, but they were manufactured in a lab. That is why they were all condensed in near the region of their invention and why it could be argued that they are relatively few in numbers. Their life cycle and reproduction rate might be slow, it could be whatever since, at the end of the day, they are artificial.

    Samus Returns on 3DS is a solid remake but it is right in the middle tier of Metroid games for me. Still good but not my first pick. That said, most of the issues that hold it back for me I attribute to the 3DS itself, it's not the most comfortable console for me and the move set is a bit too busy and awkward to manage with the touchscreen. Thankfully Dread seems to have already addressed most of those issues and it not being on the 3DS or tied to Metroid 2's repetitive structure is kind of a big deal for me so I have full confidence in Mercury Steam going forward with Dread.
    Edit: Finished Dread the other day and...yeah. Everything not great in Samus Returns was pretty much fixed in Dread. Arguably the strongest Metroid game. A top 3 Metroid game for me personally.

    • @Jackelbeaver
      @Jackelbeaver 2 года назад +10

      For me I wouldn't even call it a good *remake*, because it throws out almost everything that the original game is remembered fondly for. (The atmosphere, the ending, even the way the wildlife thins out as you approach the metroid hive) While they get rid of what didn't work in the original (the gameplay) they just throw the baby out with the bathwater and fail to really represent much of the original game at all outside of very very basic things.
      While it's competent as a videogame, I think that it doesn't do the job of representing or celebrating the original very well at all. AM2R, on the other hand, does! (and very much in the way that Zero Mission still celebrates the original even down to representing alot of its level design WHILE making it have stronger links to Super, similarly to how AM2R infuses links to Fusion.)

    • @SoIstice
      @SoIstice 2 года назад +15

      @@Jackelbeaver While I prefer AM2R between it and SR, I can tell you that it does not have Metroid II's atmosphere in the slightest. It doesn't feel creepy and claustrophobic, it feels ambient and peacefully isolating like Super and Prime. It does keep the life thinning out the deeper you go and the peaceful ending though. Really neither of them truly capture the tone and feel of what Metroid II set out to do. If you're really looking for that authenticity, play the original. Metroid II is extremely important for the overall development and evolution of the series, in my opinion. It's absolutely rough around the edges, but it introduces many mainstay elements to the franchise's playstyle and Samus' character that it's almost hard to imagine what the series would be like without Metroid II's inclusion.
      To me, despite its flaws and limitations, Metroid II is where Metroid really becomes what it is. In a weird way, it's almost like the first Metroid game that plays like a Metroid game, if that makes sense. (Aside from the linearity, of course!)

      @AzureGreatheart 2 года назад +12

      @@ramonandrajo6348 Uh… What? I know 3D is technically easier to animate than 2D, but it’s mainly a stylistic decision in the end. A lot of newer 2D animated games go for a fully animated approach over pixel art unless they’re deliberately going for nostalgic appeal, and I’m fairly sure that it’s easier to get something to look exactly right using the precise nature of pixel art that with the less structured traditional artwork. If a company wants something to have a certain look, than unless they’re an overly greedy one like EA or Activision, they’ll usually put in the extra effort to nail that look, and if they can’t be bothered, they can always used squished 3D models to cheat on that like _Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door_ did. Mercury Steam was heavily inspired by the Prime Trilogy, so using a 3D artstyle and going for a similar aesthetic makes sense. Choosing an artstyle for anything involves deciding what would work best, and Mercury Steam might have simply felt that the 3D style of Metroid Prime was what worked best for the series.

    The first ever video I remember seeing on this channel was your old SGB review of Metroid 2. I got into the Metroid series with the original NES Metroid (weird I know) out of curiosity when buying stuff on the 3ds eShop. Finishing the first game and enjoying what I played for the most part, I saw Metroid 2 and was on the fence for a while on if I should buy it or not. That's how I found this channel and started watching your videos and am still a fan to this day.
    Metroid 2 is in the top 5 Metroid games for me as of now still to this day. And I've played it far more times than I should probably admit. It's atmosphere while simple and the lack of music hurts in areas gives off a very big part into the dread (heh) you experience. While linear, Metroid 2 gives a definite sense of progress while still having exploration a main goal in finding the Metroids and items. Plus it shows that even if you're getting stronger as you go, the metroids are getting stronger as well so you're still powerful but never strong enough to take it easy and believe you're safe.
    But thank you again for your countless reviews of Metroid 2 at this point and thank you for bringing such joy throughout all the hardships and introducing me to some of my favorite games and franchises.

    I haven't played the 3ds remake, but i'm glad that the studio is getting to work on Dread. In a modern day (and especially in game development), It can be hard to remember that we learn best by making mistakes. A lot of developers make a product that wasn't up to what the company and/or the fans expectations, and then are immediate kicked off the team or stationed somewhere else. It's nice seeing a studio be able to make a sequel to their work where they get to show that they did learn from their mistakes. At least hopefully.

    Metroid II was my real introduction to Metroid. I am just a _bit_ too young to have been into gaming when the original game came out, but the series as a whole is actually tied to one of my very earliest memories of life- I can still clearly remember when I was about 4 years old going around to my cousins' place and they were playing a colourful, weird-looking game where this little orange cyclops-looking thing was running around some kind of cave. I asked them what it was and I can still remember them just saying: "Metroid". I had no idea what it was (and I didn't get to play it of course), but I thought it looked cool as hell. But my first console was a Gameboy, and Metroid II was one of the first full-length adventure games I got for it, a serious long-term challenge totally different from the likes of Tetris, Super Mario Land or Dr. Mario. I'll always have a soft spot for that game. I'm sure I still have my original copy of it in my game box somewhere (possibly even the original manual, albeit without the cover, since it was a preowned copy when I got it), and since it's still compatible with the GBA cart slot on the bottom of my old DS (or I could even put 4 AA's in my old classic Gameboy I wanted) I almost feel like I should go play it again now. I won't of course, I have far too many other games to play, but I _could._
