As a listener, I am challenged by the complexity of this Sonata. It is definitely not easy listening; however, this is not meant in any negative sense whatsoever. I am awed by the brilliance of both Haydn and Riefling. Riefling's understanding and interpretation of this note-intensive piece is nothing less than astounding. Fluid technique and an artistic use of dynamics, pauses and rests are integral to a wonderful, burnished musical experience.
@@davidhertzberg I uploaded some recordings of Riefling on YT already 12 years ago...but in fact he is still a great little known pianist...his 32 Beethoven Sonatas are magnificent...
What a serious musician - I mean real musician. I felt I was listening to Haydn's music through Robert Riefing - and not the other way around. Thank you, davidhertzberg.
Reading along enhances the charm of this piece for me. Such lovely interpretation by the, to me completely unknown, pianist Robert Riefling. Thank you for this listening pleasure !
Here once again ... dizzy from listening to the countless fabulous renditions of Joseph Haydn's Piano Sonatas. Thank you so much, David, for the seemingly never ending abundance of gorgeous music. Your channel is indeed "The Land of Milk & Honey" :o)
Robert Dankwart Leo Riefling 1911 - 1988 a Norwegian pianist ...was a Professor in Copenhagen from 1967, and in Oslo from 1973 .. was a brother of pianist Reimar Riefling. .. studied piano in Oslo with Nils Larsen, and from 1928 in Germany with Karl Leimer, Wilhelm Kempff and Edwin Fischer ...

Great comments... and to think that before I uploaded this, Riefling was unknown to RUclips.
@@davidhertzberg Hard to believe indeed! Thank for appreciating my comments.

Great commentary, thank you.
Well-articulated performance of this fine-composed sonata with clean sound of piano. Thanks for the precious upload!

Enjoyed it a lot. One of my favourite sonatas by Haydn. Does anyone know what piano he was playing on this recording?

0:49 and especially 0:55 sounds like Schubert
Great, but I would have appreciated hearing the repetitions of the expositions in the first and third movements.
