I think people thought Mariah was an Mezzo-Soprano in the beg of her career because of her inconsistent high belting and it made her seem like an untrained singer. When in reality I think she was still trying to understand her voice because during 1990-1992 she didn't know what her voice was capable of doing at the time. So she was just an untrained Soprano. But during the musicbox tour era she finally took the time off and found out and tried more things with her voice and experimented with it. And she finally knew how to use it. And you can tell she wasn't a Mezzo because Mezzos don't usually belt consistently F5s/F#5s/G5s all the time. It's rare for Mezzos to do what Mariah does so to call her an Mezzo is outrageous. Mariah had ease on her F#5s in 1993-1995/6. So that's why I think she's not a Mezzo-Soprano. And people say she's a mezzo because she can't sustain F5s and G5s when honestly it's not because she can't it's because she just doesn't want to. Thank you for listening.
Plus maintains those belts that high are not really palatable in pop songs and don’t really sell like that tbh. But nobody ready to talk about that business side yet!🫢
the old mariah or the new mariah is not a mezzo, people kept thinking her voice is damaged but the truth is, her nodules can change in size from time time, because she sounded better in 2003 & 2010 & 2016 than she did in 1998, those years her voice was like a mature version of the 90s and she was on fire! and her 2014 album proves that shes always had the same vocal range, i think she sings certain songs in a lower key to preserve her voice, because this video proves she was definitely pushing her upper belts in her debut, you could hear the strain
For me she was soprano, she told us that she had a very low register, but not, she have a good technique for to get them, but you are not soprano because of the highs or the lows, it is more related of where does your voice resonate the most, where the color is more rich, and her low tones are mostly air.
I don‘t see where this video “proves“ anything. She‘s belting Eb5 and F5 or F#5, nothing a mezzo can‘t do. Her comfort range at her best is E/F3 - Bb5. Her singing in full voice stop being consistent and balanced above Bb5. From B5 and above she will use whistle or a thin, baby-like head voice in the B5-D6 area (with not much dynamic control). In the 90‘s she will not even dare to go up there live. Her voice (like Whitney’s, Celine’s, Lara’s or Beyoncé’s and Christina‘s) start to sound high at Eb/E5, which is where the mezzo’s passagio into the upper range is. Sopranos like Sohyang, Labelle or Franklin start sounding high at F#/G5, which is where the soprano passagio is. Mariah writes her songs, she knows where her forte is and she NEVER wrote a song that has a soprano tessitura or climax - F5-C6 or above. Vision of Love has a typically mezzo range. She spends a lot of time in the low, middle-low register and the highest note in FULL voice is a G5 either in belt or head voice (the head voice flip on „SWEET destiny“). The connected upper range of her highest songs stops at F#/G5 : Emotions, If It’s Over, AYNAF, Outside, You’re So Cold. The A/Bb5 in Dreamlover can be tricky and even in the Daydream era, she will always dodge Fantasy’s Bb5, B5 and C6. Strange for someone who is supposed to sing up to F6 or above in full voice…
@@r.uwamhenye8282 She was a light, high mezzo, so her voice was not going to be contralto deep in the lower register. One of her passagi is C5?! Could you explain? Also, I don’t see how her maxing out at Eb5 is supposed to make her a soprano. Like I said all her song have a mezzo tessitura and range in full voice. She never wrote a song where she phrases in the F5 - C6 area or above in a connected voice. She’s also very comfortable in the D3 - C4 region. A soprano would not have that ease down there.
@@r.uwamhenye8282 some of the belts are not pulled from her debut, it is just more effort. It is very difficult to belt an F5 with chest M1 coordination. she is just showing you that it is difficult.
