I used oil filter pliers placed on the tabs. Popped right off.

I have a Cub Cadet weed trimmer and the recoil broke. I took it apart and the spring unit is fine. It must be a problem with those two cogs inside the unit housing. I can't get it back together. I bought it at a garage sale and it's 2 years old. It starts really hard but once running it does a great job (or did).
