Herbie Hancock is the star instrumentalist and I believe arranger of this gem. The alto sax passage near the end is an actual passage of Charlie Parker from the original recording, the first time this type of sampling occurred, which eventually led to the Coles' Unforgettable. This song won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Chaka was invited to a jazz collaboration in the early 80s by the Griffith Park Collective styled Echoes of an Era, which features all straight-ahead jazz standards (Nancy Wilson replaces her on Vol 2). Thereafter, starting with this song, Chaka intentionally attempted to include at least one jazz song per album. I think you guys should check out Bebop Medley, which utilizes an upbeat dance tempo. I also suggest Al Jarreau's vocal version of Dave Brubeck's Blue Rondo à la Turk, which also won a Grammy, as well as his vocal adaptation of Chick Corea/Return To Forever's Spain. There's video footage of Blue Rondo with Brubeck accompanying Al on piano live at the Grammys.
Been a fan of Chaka Khan since Rufus. Saw them open for the Stones in Jax, Fl in either 71 or 72 and she was their drummer AND sang lead. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I bought this album when it was released and this song quickly became my fave.
This is called Vocalese. Manhattan Transfer made a career of it (singing words on formerly instrumental tracks). MT weren’t the only ones - the practice started before they came along in the 70s.
I remember hearing Chaka for the first time when my older sis brought home Rags to Rufus. What a great voice and so, so HOT! I remember as a 15 yr old I was like - I'll just kick Rufus ass, get the vixen, and ride off into the sunset. lol
Dizzy Gillespie played the trumpet, Herbie Hancock kills with the synth solo and he also doubles on Charlie Parker's original solo. This song and album is a genius work of art and I can't imagine will ever be repeated.

Was working in a Record Bar in 84 when her I Feel For You lp came out. Sold like hotcakes! Title song catapulted her straight up! "Chaka Chaka Chaka Khan..."
After catching the Miles and Bird version the other day, I'm delighted, well chuffed to hear this innovative take on an iconic track by jazz giants by another iconic artist. ✌🏼😎🎶🎙🎹🎷❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Check out Eddie Jefferson. He was known for making words to famous jazz songs of his day. He sang the solos 🎶 Oh also check out Chaka on the album Echos of An Era. All star line up lead by Chick Corea and Freddie Hubert! Amazing
Bruh! My bruh-bruhs! First and foremost (I caught what y'all mentioned about Taka Boom, herself, recommending this joint to y'all)! Alright now, Yvonne Stevens, aka "Taka Boom," we love you too baby! 🎤 🎼 That's real! This is a piece of art y'all! "Sisterly Love" in the building... feel the vibe!
Love her….i feel kinda underrated because she’s a Beast!! Amazing talent…always loved her vocals and been a fan since I was a little white boy in Wisconsin ages ago 😊
That fast solo beak is a copy of the Charlie Parker riff from the recording you reviewed before. That was Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet , he is the composer of the song.

Actually this is a Dizzy Gilispe track from the 40's. Lyrics were written in the 40's and Sarah Vaughn first sang it. Dizzy actually plays on this.
@@norair1010 It's titled Interlude and Bird plays on it as well.
Here is an amazing NPR tiny desktop performance she did recently. Her voice is still great at 71 years old!
Turn npr off. Govt funded propaganda. I listened for decades until 2006.
I was gonna say the same thing. She still got it!
Chaka are that tiny desk performance up and look so great.Chaka been Phyne her whole life

Al Jarreau, Lalah Hathaway are two others who are known for this.
Yep. Reminded me of Birdland.
@@cptight88 Al Jarreau's version of Spain comes to mind.
Chaka is a vocal beast. Nothing she can't do, Stevie Wonder had nothing to do with this track. Great choice.....
Hell, I was around for "Rufus"... I've been in love with this girl for decades. ❤
Thanks, guys...
Get in line pal... we all fell in love with her 🥰

Her Producer Arif Mardin put it all together.
Very fine job he made of it too.
Never heard this song before, but wow, incredible sound.
They inserted Charlie Parker's famous alto break into this song. If you listen you can catch it. They doubled a keyboard on it but Bird is in there.
Gentlemen, a great song, by Rufus! Another great song is Freedom by Love Pyschedelico😸 One fun video!
Very jazzy loved it, thanks guys.
