- How to get the beta and some mockup photos and how to use the mockup function. What works and what doesn't work.
Please do not use your original file with beta software (this applies to all beta software, not just Illustrator). Always make copies of your work. Save often.

Not one but tons of examples, thanks!
Thank you for introducing the mockup feature. It was a fun tutorial.
I hope you get useful results from the Mockup!
Amazing video, I aoreciate so much your work. It had been very helpful.
Thank you for taking the time to comment - I'm happy to read it has helped you!
That's informative
This is a good step closer to creating 3D mockups in Illustrator, it’s the same feature in Adobe Dimension, my question could I use this feature in creating my own mockup in Ai, like a box of milk. Without using the 3D and Materials option? Thanks for showing us.
The mockup function is based on photos, so you do not need to create 3D objects or even prepare Smart objects (like you need to do in Photoshop). Still: the feature is under development, so simple objects like a tetrapak might work quite well, but more complex ones could fall apart. You will only see when trying out unfortunately, betas are always a surprise. Make sure you report any issues you face to the developers, so they can improve it.
@@Vektorgarten wow, that’s amazing, can’t wait to try it out, and thanks for your warning bout not using original files. The only feature I have been waiting for is being able to create a plastic bag using the Mesh Gradient tool in the 3D and materials, but I found a work around by using using the any of the warp, pucker, twirl, wrinkle etc… tools to create realistic plastic folds in a mesh object. Like a plastic pita bread bag I designed and wanted to dress it up with my art. I hope they find a way, it will be a great relief for packaging.
I apologize, where did you get this version of Illustrator Beta? Even on the official Adobe site there is no information about the release.
You can find the public beta versions via the Creative Cloud app. There is a beta section.
What method do you use to select both images before you go to object>mockup>create? When I select Shift and select my hoodie and logo, the mockup create option remains greyed out, so I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.
I'm just selecting them. It doesn't matter a lot. What does indeed matter is the kind of object you want to map to the hoodie. This must be vector artwork. pixels won't work. And even gradient meshes don't work.
@@Vektorgarten yes I have vector artwork I’m applying to a png photo of a hoodie. I’m using the beta version of illustrator, I can’t figure out why it won’t allow me use the mock up feature :/
@@MillsOn2Wheels I don't know if you can post a link to a screenshot or the file in the comments here. My email is info (at) mediawerk (dot) de - if you want to, send me these links and I'll have a look at it.
@@Vektorgarten I think I figured out the issue, I needed to use image trace on my vector file to get it to actually be a vector before placing over the hoodie. I was trying to place PNG on top of PNG. But thank you so much for your willingness to help!
@@MillsOn2Wheels You're welcome! I'm glad you could solve it.
I like listening to you talk.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm glad you like my videos.
Really nice tutorial! But I think this function sucks for now... Do you know how to remove it from my Illustrator installation? I use MacOS. Thanks in advance!
You cannot remove a single function from Illustrator. But you can uninstall the complete application via the Creative Cloud app.
@@Vektorgarten Thanks for yor answer, but after I asked you, I investigated Creative Cloud App and I found where you can add or remove these Add-Ons!!! It is in the three dots menu Next to "Illustrator", on the right side of the "All Apps" section.
My Mockup (Beta) option does not have "Make" button, it only has Preview mockup, Release and Edit. Anyone knows why this would be?
When you select an image and a vetor object, then the menu item changes to Create Mockup. The Preview Mockup can be used when just a vector object is selected. It will open the Mockup panel. Beta functionality is fluid, changes might happen.
I'm not able to use the mockup option, for some reason
What kind of objects do you have as an input? Illustrator needs a photo in the background and a vector object on top of that.
my 'make' button is greyed out, do you know why this would be?
Most probably because you are using some kind of forbidden artwork to map to the photo. It must be vector artwork. And still some things do not work. What's in your artwork?
Does the mockup have to be vector as well? For e.g. the mockup can't be jpeg while the artowrk is svg?@@Vektorgarten
@@nikik9569 The thing you want to apply your design to, needs to be a photo.
does the type of photo matter because I was using a jpeg @@Vektorgarten
@@nikik9569 JPEGs should work. I have used quite a couple of JPEGs with the function.
Much easier in Photoshop. My trial in Illustrator has taken 20 minutes already and no sign of it finishing. A feature added that isn't very useful and doesn't work anyway. Hopefully the final one (if it clears beta and works) will be better than Photoshop and quicker. Otherwise seems like a gimmick.
It's easier in Photoshop under the premise that you already have a template. If you do not have a template and have to set it up yourself, then it's not easier in Photoshop. If you have that template, then in Photoshop it's not only easier, but also gives you better results. As for the performance, it's influenced by your hardware. A lot of RAM, a fast processor and a good graphic card will speed it up.
