This is a bonkers review. It shoots in so many directions I wasn't expecting. XD The one point I'll parse is, I don't see the big issue with the Digivices disappearing. It was only a conduit. Maybe training wheels. They don't need it anymore. Just like they didn't need it in the first film when they were kids, and they didn't need the crests after they were destroyed.
Would love to see what Fred thinks of some stand-alone anime films that aren’t tied to a show or any other ongoing narrative. Maybe something from Hayao Miyazaki, Makoto Shinkai or Satoshi Kon? Because his experience with animation is limited to shows from his childhood (Jonny Quest, Speed Racer, etc.), he probably has preconceived notions on expectations. I would like to see if his opinion changes after giving any other movie a fair shake with an open mind. At the very least, I would like for him to see for himself that not all cartoons are “so simple” in quality of animation and story. There’s some really great stuff out there he’s missing out on.
Thanks for the suggestions! We will surely get fred to watch a Anime untied to a show in short time. The new Ghibli movie comes out soon. That might be a good option. Thanks again!

This technically doesn't retcon the first season, I mean it did but not at the extend you understood it, Tai and Kari were chosen by Homoestasis (the thing that spoke through kari in the first season during the last arc) in 1995, that was the year they met Giant agumon for the first time, and at that exact same night the other 6 kids from the first generation also were chosen after seeing the Greymon vs Parrotmon fight. The next year in 1996 is when Lui and Ukkomon met for the first time, Ukkomon is supposedly the first digimon to make contact with a human according to him but he's wrong, since the first kids were chosen a year before their encounter, he just thinks that's the case. On the other hand Ukkomon being the reason why everyone around the world eventually got a Digimon partner (like the chosen kids around the world in 02 for example) that I can believe. But lui and his "wish" in 1996 being the reason why tai and the rest were chosen in 1995, that's just impossible, not to mention in a livestream toei animation did about the 02 movie they showed a timeline of events in the adventure universe confirming what I said here. The only reason you hated it was because you thought it retconned the first season?
I follow you but it is a bit confusing. I still think this was a really bad movie as it offered nothing to first time viewers. It totally relied on viewers having prior knowledge of this show. This was also more of a drama rather than an action adventure. Hardly any action and there was no "bad guy" to defeat. I saw the movie this morning. I didn’t hate the movie tbh. They could’ve done more though.
