I don’t care what anyone says, the moment in the beginning when Tai blows his whistle to wake Greymon up, says “Go For it,” and that eye opens and Goin’ Digital starts blasting is one of the most badass moments of that film and it gets me every time to this day (29 years old now). Had me hyped af as a kid and has me hyped af now. That moment and the one right when “Let’s Kick It Up” starts playing is my favorite. The way they wrote and edited the score to build right up to those moments when the music starts blasting made for some of the best parts of the film.

In hebrew, a resistor is pronounced as "Nagad", which is not only an electronic part, but also a rank in the military, so the joke went like this:
"Do you know what a nagad (resistor) means?"

    “Did you see that?”
    “No, I was sleeping”
    “BUT YOU’RE DRIVING!”
And you’re dead right, the dubbed soundtrack with the ska & pop-punk is so good and so nostalgic
Also wtf, how am I 25 and only just learning this is a mash-up of 3 mini-movies?!?

😂 The director of the first two movies, Mamoru Hosoda, actually created another "War Games" film bc he wasn't able to use his full creative thinking in the Digimon version. It's called "Summer Wars"! Definitely recommend watching it. His art style is one of my favorites! :)

That was a great joke and makes me laugh everytime i watch. I still pull up the soundtrack every once in a while to jam out.
I was today years old when i learned it was a mashup of 3 seperate movies but I'm also not surprised. I always toyed with the idea of watching the three segments in tandem with the show, so the prologue, adventure 1, Our War Game, Adventure 2 and then Hurricane Landing. Not having watched the full versions yet, I think they did a really good job of taking the three movies and making them fit together. It's not seamless obviously but still a dang good job.

There's a video on youtube called "The Pokemon Theatrical Releases Defined An Era" that I think illustrates a lot of what you're going for here. The guy in the video is a bit of a cynic, but his quote: "If you hate what Americans did to Pokemon, understand they didn't do a bad job. You just disagreed with the vision." Says something to me that I think a lot of people don't really think about and something I think you touch on here.
Like the Digimon movie (btw, I'm with you on the Western Version being top tier. Omni-mon fusion scene is still cool as hell), the Western Pokemon movies had a completely original score and changed some elements from the source material. At least for the first pokemon movie, I believe made it stronger overall. Stronger soundtrack, message and even characterization.
It's kind of a mixed bag for me, because on one hand I want adaptions to be faithful to the source material. But when you look at something like the Japanese and Western versions of some of the movies we adapted, I think there are a lot of area's where the western version improved upon the original. It's a dilemma for sure, but when you get hype shit like that Omni-mon fusion scene (US version), damn do you make me question where I stand in regards to adaptions and Dubs.

The Omnimon scene is an amazing example of well-done localization, imo. Localization isn't just about "Okay, now all the words are in English instead of Japanese.", it's about making the product "better" for the new audience. The difference between the U.S. Omnimon scene and the Japanese Omegamon scene showcase the difference in U.S and Japanese cultural views on how a "savior" character should be presented. The Japanese is somewhat understated and shows an almost spiritual/divine presentation, while the U.S. version is bombastic and triumphant, and even makes a dumb pun, because *that* is how an American audience prefers their heroes.

    • @calumsanderson6741

They bought a portable DVD player; and we brought a solid 6-8 movies to replay over and over to spend the time. I must've watched this particular movie easily more than a dozen times on this trip; and randomly have popped this on when I am in a very nostalgic mood.

Even as a kid I knew that the 3rd part was pretty weak in comparison but I genuinely feel that the english version of our war games is great, even past the nostalgia that less than jake gives me. I didn't realize that the comedy with the moms recipes was mostly new either, but that further solidifies my opinion. Me and my friend that's never seen it watched the japanese version of our war game and he thought it was ok, and I thought it felt flat in comparison. I think that the mom comedy (momedy if you will) along with the music changes are why, especially in the omnimon part the american dub is much more energetic.

I didn't know they cut so much and had to re-contextualize the story. I always thought it was just 2 Movies (1+2 and 3) with an already coherent Story in Japan and they just put them together for the release here. They did a damn good job at working all these Movies into one story.
The music, could've guessed they switched that up for the global release, but man, I can not imagine this Movie without exactly this Pop-Punk-Ska Skater-Rock Score. Fun fact: here in Brazil, this movie is the only thing we got of the full-fledged American/English dub. While the Brazilian dub used many of the English names for the characters, it actually dubbed over a version (I think it was the Latin American one) that used the original Japanese footage, so for the most part, especially during the Jetix era, we got a more faithful dub with all the original music (Tamers and Frontier in particular managed to have their OPs and EDs translated!).
That being said, the English dub's version of Our War Game's climax works way better than the original, with the score building up to Omnimon's first appearance and Let's Kick It Up blaring in the background while he destroys all the Diaboromon copies. It really gives the scene an extra oomph, a triumphant adrenaline rush that the Japanese version doesn't have.

2:10 Excuse me?! That dumb rap ruined the movie for literally everyone who didnt grew up with the US version of the 1st Digimon series, like for example here in germany they translated all the original songs from the japanese shows into german and they were EPIC, .... but for the movie Fox decided to just run with the NA version instead and no, its not great at all, lol, idk HOW people like the rap as digivolving song, its silly and its no where near as heroic and uplifting of a song as the original one!

Glad someone made this video. The music selection and even the original stuff made for the western movie was awesome. definitely shaped some of my music tastes today. Honestly the original stuff they came up with for the movie is great too, Here We Go and Run Around are certified bops.

3:35 "Whimsical marching sound" ... I actually hope that you actually knew that's Ravel's "Bolero"... it's a quite famous composition of classical music. I actually think that it fits much better, as the Bolero's composition is constantly escalating, which mirrors what happens in the movie as things escalate and get out of control.

The movie was AMAZING. I remember rewatching it when I was fresh out of college and it still held up. I will say the only part I didn't like was the third part with Cherubimon. Didn't think much of that part. Also, they just dropped Angemon and Angewomon Mega-Digivolving and ended it in the same second?! WHAT?!

The one thing hurricane touchdown did that was great was Terriormon calling Willace's mom fat instead of Davis. It was the only time I remember laughing when watching the Japanese movies.

I still remember as a kid who lived in the UK and was a fan of the Adventure series trying so hard to find a copy of this to watch online, since there was no chance it was coming to theatres near me and my parents weren't going to buy a copy of the movie for me. The day I found a full length version of this uploaded on some random website (which may have given my family laptop, of the time, a virus) in 240p it felt like I had won the lottery. Good times.

Your conclusion from 12:13 on is spot on on how I feel about the movie I saw it a couple years back with my nieces and felt as young as they were at the time... The only things for me if I remember correctly in the first movie Kari says it's not the same Agumon and then I think in Tri or Kizuna idk you see a flashback of the first movie so it's like wait was it the same Agumon? The other thing for me I wish TK and Kari in the last movie would have said the same as the Japanese where they say they want to use the powers of Hope and light but that's just nitpicking I guess...and the fact that they made Willis the creator of Diaboromon had more weight for me when they mentioned Willis in Tri because he was working with Izzy cuz if not I would have been like eh but either way it's still a movie I got back to all the time

It is indeed the same Agumon. Don't know why they changed it in the dub. They probably didn't want the first time we meet Agumon not to be the first time that Tai sees Agumon

@Regulus They probably said they're different *because* it was ambiguous, and they didn't want to confuse viewers (especially new ones), so they just decided that they weren't the same. And tbh, regardless of what later stuff claims, it doesn't make sense for them to be the same.

I get so defensive when people (who are now grown up) take a stab at the movie and dub, and also the newer adventure movies and reboot. Are they the most high-quality of series/movies? Hell no. But ten years ago I would've killed to have Digimon adventure back. Our dreams have basically come true and yet all people seem to do is bitch and criticise every little thing. We never fell in love with the animation or the quality of the music as kids (well, for the dub at least), we fell in love with the story and the characters - it's the story and the nostalgia that keeps the baby flame burning bright. If you want to trash it or you're not keen, then fine, just don't watch it. But half of these articles / youtubers seem to think they almost have to criticise these days to be a 'critic', since they've learnt loads of things about film... y'know, since they were ten.
Even with the reboot, i've had some goosebump/emotional moments. Something I never got with other anime. It's amazing to have someone who claims to love digimon actually defending it. Good on ya, Digiknow.

I love the digimon the movie but I definitely think something was lost from the original. I love the dumb jokes that the dub makes and I think I would watch the dub more often than the originals.

The three parts of the movie had a single thing in common and it was Wallace. The beggining is the birth of the digidestin and the birth of them including Wallace. The second part is Wallace creating the diaboromon accidently. And finally part is the same virus from diaboromon coming to cocomon. Resulting in the final part. At least for the American version.

alot of people hold "original" as being equal to good when in reality it's not that simple good is good bad is bad original plays no part in it changes to a script can heavily improve it and the writing for an example Voltron was insanely popular in the states because the localizers changed everything about go lions and it's writing while in japan it flopped bad and no one there even knows it exist with the only fans being people that watched the English version.

    • @thedigiknow
      @thedigiknow  2 года назад +3

Yeah! Sort of related to the Voltron comparison, I was recently talking to a friend who grew up in Japan and he was shocked when I told him that Cowboy Bebop was huge in North America. I think here it was one of *the* great anime because it was on Adult Swim or whatever, but in Japan it was maybe just another show. A great show, but one of many great shows.
