The kids morphing into Digimon wasn't a major issue for me. The simple fact is it didn't really grab or keep my attention very well, and I was expecting a further continuation of the storyline from the second season.

I think it’s worth noting that towards the end of the series the Digidestined actually FAILED to stop the villain’s plot. The Royal Knights (on behalf of Lucemon) were gathering data by destroying the Digital World little by little, and despite the Digidestined’s best efforts to stop them, it wasn’t enough. In the end, you can actually see the Digital World reduced to nothing. While other Digimon series (and even other series in general)’s main focus is “How do we stop the bad guys from reaching their goal?”, this one is actually “We failed to stop the bad guys, so where do we go from here?” It taught us to keep going and pressing on even though all hope seems lost.

Frontier is an excellent season tbh. They had already dragged out the Digimon+Partner concept. It needed something new. The only criticism I have towards it was the fact that only the two main characters could fusion their beast+human spirit. It would’ve been great to see the others evolving to that stage as well. Also the plot twist with Koichi was amazing

This is my Digimon guilty pleasure.
I enjoy aspects of Frontier (turning in Digimon, the theme song, the kids English voice actors, Bokomon and Namon, the battle in the last episode, small easter eggs like where Gailantmon was voiced by Brain Beacock and Steve Blum, the design of the Human Legendary Warrior forms); but as a whole I can't say it has the nostalgia I get from Adventure, a badass like Ken and more depth to the villain like Adventure 02, or the complex story and characters of Tamers.
I gladly own the first four seasons on DVD, but I can see why people have their problems with this season.

All of what you said here is true and those were some of the reasons I disliked Frontier at first. However, you missed the fact that there IS a motivation, but it's not exactly clear since the beginning and it's exactly that what the whole Ophanimon/get to that place is about. The kids always had the choice to return to their world and the fact that they didn't is exactly why they were chosen, they were driven by something bigger than themselves and, at the same time, something they were looking for inside themselves.
The reason Frontier became my second favorite (nothing can beat Tamers) is because when I rewatched it about two years ago I noticed all this subtle character details I didn't notice as a kid. Sure, they have no clear motivation from the beginning more than "this seems interesting" but they have a lot more than the Adventure kids that were kinda forced into it. There's actually a whole arc that deals with their motivations and it's the one where they are inside Sephirotmon.
What I like the most about Frontier is that it talks about defense mechanisms and how their backgrounds and circumstances have made them develop these defense mechanisms that kinda alienates them from their true, vulnerable selves: Zoe? A tomboyish girl who had to learn to appear feminine in order to fit and always felt alone because her relationships were superficial. JP: a fat, rejected kid who learned to be accomodating and silly to be liked because he didn't like himself. Takuya, who was too scared of taking responsibilities so he became reckless and doesn't take anything seriously. Tommy: a spoiled kid who always just had to cry to get whatever he wanted and was used to depending on other for everything. Kouji who, after his parents split and his father prohibited from seeing his mother, kinda closed himself to any new relationships and lastly, Kouichi, of whom we don't know much but whose motivation is the clearest: hating his father but wanting desperately to getting to know his brother.
If you pay attention, whenever a character is the focus of an incident, it always has to do with their defense mechanisms. The idea behind their enemies and fights usually puts them face to face with those parts of themselves that they don't want to accept until the Sephirotmon arc where they finally realize that everything that they have gone through has shown them that without their defense mechanisms they are stronger.
There's even a part where Takuya goes back to the real world in order to run away from the fear of the fight, from his lack of confidence in his abilities and thanks to Ophanimon he realizes that he has always had it in him to rise up to the challenge (just by accepting he already had) and he decides to go back to see his responsibilites through.
There's a lot more that I like which is all about characters, like the part when Zoe, Tommy and JP complain that they don't have powerups and can only watch from the sidelines and JP tells them that even from the sidelines, they have a role to play.

it pushed the importence of family and friends
      even different kinda familys
tai and kari: shows the loving sibling relationships, along with good parents
matt and tk: show a seperated family, but still shows the brotherly connection and brings out a part of matt he tries to hide
izzy: adoupted and ahving to deal with that alone cause his mind is sometimes abit much for him and his parents never gathering the courge to tell him

Did I have to wake up super early because it came on at 6 am and aired on a channel we barely got and would I have to spend 15 minutes adjusting the antenna so I could watch it? Yes, but it got me through a school year where I was bullied so badly and had so many issues academically and emotionally my parents transferred me to another school halfway through the year. I could relate to all the characters in one way or another and it still holds a special place in my heart almost 19 years later.

Then by the time we get to episode 30 huge chunks of the digimon's world has been consumed and probably thousands of them died because of it. Due to the kids failures. I actually loved the episode where Takuya becomes a digimon and see's the world through their eyes. I also love how one of the boys, I think his name was T.J. I don't remember but he had The MetalKabuterimon Spirit. literally tried to claim Zoe's human spirit (Kazemon) And I always laugh at that moment because well it wouldve been funny.

Yes. It was actually a sort of mutual, uncomfortable attraction between Tai and Kairi.
There was an interview with some of the Japanese cast and I think one of the big writers a while back, and from what they said, they all understood, and made certain choices to carefully construct and deliver the lines to properly carry that subtext, particularly for that episode where Tai was back. That episode *feels* weird and awkward and frustrating even visually, and it's like that on purpose.
One of the most interesting features was the dynamic of Kairi and Agumon/Koromon, which they said was intended to carry the energy of a wife or girlfriend finding out about a mistress, but not wanting to make a scene.
I imagine none of that was carried into the dub, of course.

I recalled Takuya and Koji's eternal struggle against the royal knights, clashing with each other, again and again, but lost every single time. And the foreshadowing of Koichi actually already being dead and the eventual lead up to the last scene with "An Endless Tale" theme, was a truly touching and emotional moment.

When I see or hear comments like this all I can think of is that you just don’t get it. With frontier the themes of spiritual growth and reliance on discovering a solution were always present. Even some of the stand alone episodes like making burgers for petaldramon serve to show that the characters each have their own strengths. In the beginning of the show JP was more stand off ish. Which was refreshing because some shows try to use the heavier set characters as bullies but adding him to the main cast gave meaning to his redemption or realization arc. Something else they did well is that the cast still had some elements of being children. Such as the case of episode 2 where takuya and zoey have a little argument over whether or not being older makes someone a leader. Bringing in kojis brother cemented that he still needed to learn how to trust people and that he can let someone in and they won’t excessively lie to him. They served as opposites for each other in the sense that koji held the spirits of light and his brother held the spirits of darkness yet their personalities didn’t match their spirits. With the beast spirits it really threw Takuya for a loop when he finally found burninggreymon but couldn’t control it. Koji could control kendogarurumon relatively easy but Takuya just couldn’t. He was too hot headed and the spirit knew that and as a result he lost control. Another thing they did well were some of the beast spirits. They were offshoot species of digimon we already knew from the original adventure series. It was a nice reference that did a lot with the carrying design elements yet familiar feeling. And susanoomon was a nice reference to omnimon without feeling like a cut copy version of him.
Frontier is more underrated than anything because while some characters had to learn the same lessons over and over again it emphasized the face they are kids and sometimes kids don’t learn what they need to the first time and other times it takes painful reminders for a lesson to take hold as something they really need to pay attention to

    • @StonedHunter
      @StonedHunter 3 года назад +27

You put this into words so much better than I could. This series felt like it was focusing more on gradual growth of the characters instead of quick growth. And like you said, they're children and often times children (and even adults) have to learn certain lessons multiple times before it sticks, especially when that lesson involves deeply rooted insecurities and past trauma. I can understand why the writing of this show doesn't vibe well with everyone, but to just dismiss it as objectively bad writing I feel doesn't do it enough justice.

It was intended for older viewers who grew up with the Adventure series 1 and 2, Tamers, and Frontier and as such it was incredibly adult themed not only with the typical anime fanservice, but also dark and depressing themes as well. The main character doesn't even care if he lives or dies and one of the female characters was a victim of sexual assalt so yeah Savers was as dark as hell. Characters in all Digimon series tend to be depressed or have a friend who is depressed.

I find it interesting that so many people hated Frontier but adored Tamers... I had the exact opposite experience. Frontier had a fully formed plot that took on a massive effort to show as much of how life in the digital world is like. The twist with Koichi felt intentional, with subtle elements leading up to it. Not to mention that him being controlled by Cherubimon was a DIRECT result of his incredibly complicated feelings regarding his family and the spiral of loneliness he felt as a result. It was only possible for him to be taken advantage of because of the vulnerable depression he was in and we see the journey he goes through alongside his twin to come to terms with that. You could even make some comparisons to Ken of 02 in how depression can destroy a person. We also get a protagonist in Takuya who is selfish, providing a long road to learning to be more responsible. (I mean, he literally abandons his quest because he gets SO scared he runs off with the only goal of saving his own skin. And has to realize he's abandoning everyone else too if he does this.) I completely disagree that the characters lack depth or real world applicable growth. With Tamers I felt like the first half promised a lot and was very strong, and then completely falls off into a miserable slog of disjointed character beats. Impmon and Jeri carried the series and once the D-Reaper came into play, Jeri's possessed random acts of shock value got old very very fast. I watched both of these as a child (and one who was all about darker story plots) and I could tell you even 20 years later more about the cast of Frontier than anyone from Tamers. The main cast of Tamers to me had very little memorable about them, whereas the digimon societies in Frontier always kept me interested. To me personally, while I do agree Frontier had plenty of issues with its filler dragging on a little too long(this definitely didn't do it any favors with getting viewers to look past the "no-partners" aspect of the show.), Tamers' endless pacing issues were much much harder to sit through and were likely a big part of why Tamers' ratings tanked by its finale. I do find your perspectives here interesting, despite feeling most of your points against Frontier could easily be said for Tamers as well, but i think we got very different things out of each which i can respect.

I've watched all your other Digimon reviews, and I agreed with them for the most part. I wholeheartedly and respectfully disagree with this one completely though.
Most I will agree is that people turned their heads because the formula changed and what was left wasn't enough to keep them hooked, but I will disagree with literally everything else.
First of all, there's an implication that the humans are digitized in the other seasons, and that the danger they are in is real... However only Digimon are ever in the front lines. Digimon literally act as shields to the Chosen, and there's this clear dissonance. Digimon are objects (that sometimes complement their "owners") to be used, and most of their "friendly" discourse doesn't really come through. They talk like they are friends, while they are mostly weapons.
Digimon Frontier completely turns that around. Oh you are digital? You want stakes? Here, be full fledged characters that doesn't need complements. Go fight you wars, if you lose you die and it is your fault, there's no reviving as an egg, because you're human. And for the first time humans actually have agency to stand up and fight for the Digimon. Now, why would they do that? Well. Those very "not very good" filler episodes are full of small moments where the kids learn to care for this world and their inhabitants.
Not only that, it is actually the least gimmicky and confusing evolutionary wise series. There's no thing to collect besides the Legendary Souls. Each kid gets 2 or 3 forms, and they all make some sense. There's no tags, mentals, cards. Your plant doesn't become a bird and your armadillo doesn't become a submarine. Your dead angel doesn't go back to an egg, and the rules are a lot clearer. And I don't really find the characters bland (except for maybe Tommy).
Takuya goes through the Digimon leader gauntlet of being a moronic idiot that has to learn to be a leader, except that everyone, except for Tommy doesn't just take that right away. He really takes the torch of having to be courageous straight from Tai, while Davis felt too stupid and Takato was a cry-baby.
JP probably has the biggest evolution as a character in the series. He is greatly entitled despite being a coward, but he greatly adapts into being a support character that knows how to protect people, or stand up for injustice. He even grows to the point where his crush on Zoey isn't really an issue any more. THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS. AN ANIME CHARACTER THAT GROWS OUT OF A CRUSH, WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT.
Koji and Koichi are a bit of a mixed bag, but a lot of the plot twists rely on them, and they work. It was cool finding out there was a twin brother, and it was cool to learn how different his condition was to the rest of the characters in the last arc.
Zoey has a lot of faults that "the girl of this shonen" has, but as far as it goes, it's not that bad. She is not really worried about boys. She is called out for being vapid. She learns about responsability and friendship as much as anyone else. She feels like a good mid point between Sora and Mimi.
Tommy is probably the least innovative character, but if I'm being honest, he is a lot less annoying than young TK and a lot more relevant than Cody. Yeah, he does have to learn the same lesson over and over, but I think he comes across as the most actually responsible little kid in Digimon up to this point.
I think the villains are a bit lacking in terms of personality (Except for Mercurymon. HE IS RAD AF. Don't tell me you didn't like when he stole Seraphimon's powers), but they really are the first set of Digimon villains that are actualyl competent. In Adventure, the villains only ever succeed when the kids aren't around, with the exception of Myotismon. In 02, they have to take back from a villain that already won while there was no one around. In Tamers there's a lot of even give and take, but the villains never really do much apart from Leomon or the last arc.
Frontier? NO BOY. YOU BEGINNERS BETTER LEARN FAST. SEE? THIS WORLD IS ACTUALLY DYING. WOOPS YOU WERE TRYING TO PROTECT THIS CITY? TOO BAD, IT IS GONE NOW. AND EVERY CITY WE TAKE MAKES THE LAST BOSS STRONGER. Every villain gets at least one win. The Royal Knights kick their butts into Oblivion and it is actually really engaging to see the kids turning the tables with some level of strategy and perseverance.
Also, FIRE!!! is and absolute masterpiece of a theme song. The ending theme is also very beautiful and touching. With the Will and The Last Element are probably the best evolution themes the show ever had. I grew up watching all 4 original seasons, here in Brazil it was a lot better represented, and had a more fair run than in America. So while I may be nostalgic for all 4 seasons, Frontier remains my favorite.

    2. Elementals. This show highlights elemental powers which is rarely highlighted in Digimon series.
    3. Introduced a lot of great Digimon such as the Double Hybrids, Zeta Hybrids, and the first 2 Royal Knights (Technically Omegamon, UlForce Veedramon, and Gallantmon appeared first, but Dynasmon and LordKnightmon were the ones that established the Royal Knight thing, and then it's carried further to Savers and the Digimon Lore).
    4. Susanoomon. IMO it's the best 'final form' in any Digimon series than Omegamon / Imperialdramon / Gallantmon / ShineGreymon BM.

But out of all the people I talked to, I still haven't met someone who hate this season. This is the 1st time I am hearing people hate it. Who cares they don't have partner Digimon when they can turn into them. When I was a kid, I thought the was the coolest thing. I personally always thought it was better than the other seasons because they can actually defend themselves rather than hide behind their Digimon in a dangerous world. I still recommend people to watch it, and it's still my favorite

Honestly the whole dynamic in Digimon Adventure (and other seasons but now I just use this one season as example) was quite interesting. They had great power in form of there partners but they themselves where just human kids trying to survive in this dangerous world. Even a Rocky level Digimon can be a thread because if it gets somehow past there partners a poison arrow ore a little fire ball ore some claws are enough to put them six feet under. And they have to deal with problems like finding food and water. Simply wandering a great distance is not an easy task. Although I wonder why they don't use there flying partners fore fast travel more often. I know it eats up there partners energy reserve but I think long wandering through some desert is not much less exhausting. It is quite unic compared to other franchises where humans work together with monsters. Fore example in Bayonetta ore Persona 5 they have a more symbotic conection with there monsters that gave the humans themselves super powers. Bayonetta dont has to be afraid of a 3rd sphere Angel. Infact she is actully harder to kill than here demon summons.
And she seems to have unlimited stamina and a transformation that helps with travel faster than a car.
With Characters like here ore the Phantom Thieves you dont run into problems like in Digimon Adventure with these Normal human Kids. Well maybe not normal if look at this realistically but you know what I mean.
I found this dynamic (I hope that is the right word) very interesting and cool. Mere humans drooped as Keyfigures in this dangerous adventure.
The downsides is that they dont do much in combat besides enable the evolution.
The thing is in Digimon Adventure the writing is focused on the Kids while Digimon partners are not all that interesting Characters. I like Gomamon but still. It is generally more satisfying to have a Character I like to do cool stuff in combat than a Character I found relatively uninteresting. I love Bayonetta as a Character so seeing here whipping the floor with those Angels is immensely satisfying and fun. But in Adventure all the interesting main Characters are the Kids that can not fight. Its not like they never do anything cool like when TK tricked Puppetmon, when Joe saved Tk from drowning and all the stuff Izzy pulls of but still.
I gotta say Tamers is my favorite when it comes to human monster partnership. Through different means, the cards, that unexplained symbiotic link Takato has with Guilmon and the Biomerge evolution the Tamers actively help in combat the entire time in cool fashion. Tamer and Digimon feel more like partners.
On top of that the Digimon are way better written so seeing them kick ass is so much cooler.
Bayonetta has cooler teamwork with here Demons but not much of a relationship with them. The Demons are just cool monsters with no personality.
While Tamers has its moments where the human partners where in danger like when Gargomon was threatening Rika with his gun the problems the Adventure kids had to deal with are not all that prominent but overall I found its the best example of human monster partnership of them all.
Not just looking at Digimon but looking at all franchises I know.
Ahh the power of compelling writing. Its marvelous. of course that is all subjectively. I love the human Characters and Digimon in Tamers so much but someone else who is not as blown away as I am, may not find it halve as good.
When it comes to Frontier I honestly simply dont like the Characters. Its that simple. I dont have anything against Kids that can fight themselves.

The thing that always annoys me about frontier is how Takuya and Koji got like 4 different spirit evolutions while the other 4 only got human and beast spirit evolutions. Add in the fact that the fourth kind of spirit evolution included taking the spirits of the other 4 characters and combing them with Takuya and Koji meant that the others could no longer join in with the fighting, forcing them to find other things to do while those 2 did all the fighting. I will say that, while I didn't out right hate this season, it's not one of my favourites (mainly because other seasons had characters that stood out more to me). Being somewhat fair to that idea, as far as my memory recalls, that's kind of a running theme with Digimon, where the goggles-wearing main protagonist and his '"rival"s Digimon have more forms than the others, at least regarding the first two seasons. After Frontier, I kinda fell out of watching Digimon so dunno if this kept going. Though I'd have to agree with the last bit. Even if the other Digimon couldn't get as strong as Goggles and Rival's, they could still do something. The leader in "Young Hunters" (or as I like to call it: "Time Wasters") also got his partner an extra evolution near the end of that 'season.'
"Savers/Data Squad" and "Appmon" pretty much had all of the main partners get equal treatment in Mega/Mega-equivalant forms. The other kids have to give their spirits to those two so they could reach the next level of evolution. So while they're out fighting the royal knights the others are doing jack. ...isnt that always what happens in most digimon series? It's always others using their digimon to help the goggle leader's and angsty guy's digimons merge and become some super duper mega level.

THAT I can agree with! As much as I like this season, it was such a travesty seeing the other kids get shafted, especially since there ARE canon power ups for them that they for some reason, decided to ignore.

Yeah...as much as I actually do like Frontier, I can admit that is a very valid criticism. Even before the remaining kids started passing their Digimon spirits Takuya and Koji had already out paced them by being able to fuse their human and beast spirits. The rest of the kids only had two forms yet the leader and angsty one kept getting power up after power up.

I stopped after the fourth season, too. But not because I didn't like "Frontier". It's my favorite season out of the first four as well. School just got rougher and the fifth season somehow didn't do it for me in the beginning after I had seen the much better fourth season. However, I caught glimpse of later episodes which looked really epic, to be honest.

Y’all are forgetting that the SPIRITS are their PARTNERS 🤨 and this is a KIDS SHOW it throws away logic and everything, just enjoy where the story goes and the themes they introduce. These types of shows try to teach kids to just go with the flow and it succeeds at that through their characters.

I admire the premise, but the execution was sloppy and one of the arcs (the Royal Knights) was extremely drawn-out, and only served to amplify the feeling that the other four kids were useless in battle and to the plot. The characters weren't often delved into, and when they were it barely would last an episode or two before being quickly resolved without much long-term payoff. I still enjoy the show, but it's always through the lenses of nostalgia and an actually good English-dub theme song (and, yes, I watch the dub, so sue me).

Yes this the double Spirit and Hyper Spirit was inspired by Season 1. Its explicid stated, what they did what because of Adventures. And its not like they made it worst. Season 1 and 2 only give Ultimates / Megas too the Leader.

Sunaki1000 Oh, they technically made it worst. Why? In Frontier, anyone who is not Takuya and Koji are useless.

I think the biggest problem with Frontier is the over reliance on comedy, and unwillingness to take its ideas and storylines through further development. It is not a bad season, but it could have been a lot better if handled differently.

I agree, frontier wasn't bad, but it had potential to go even further if handled differently.

Also keep in mind English dubs lose so much of good story. Look at adventure 01. Saban destroyed any serious tone by adding cheesy, corny jokes puns and cutting scenes. Disney did the same thing during their run as owners. When I watched adventure in the original uncut subs, I was moved

"I guess my main problem with these characters is I don't really understand there dynamic."
Clearly, you had friends growing up.
As someone who didn't have friends, I can tell you that there dynamic is abundantly clear to me. It's not something I can really explain, but anyone that grew up alone, like I did, probably knows what I mean.
And how on Earth you can bash the character development in frontier is completely beyond me. Have you seen the other seasons? Tai and his gang are all the exact same people at the end of the series as they were at the beginning. The same can be said for Davis and his bunch.
The guys from tamers had better development than the first two seasons, but nothing compared the frontier.
The frontier gang become COMPLETELY different people by the end of the series. There major character flaws get corrected. They grow. They mature.
The fact that you missed this is evidence that you either weren't paying much attention, or were already predisposed towards hating this season, and thus didn't care.(much the same way weebs are always bashing SAO. It's not great, but it's not nearly as awful as they make it out to be.)

If you want to pretend this thing has character development that's fine but don't ignore the development of other series.

      i both agree and disagree
i agree that frontier had plenty of character development
but i disagree when you say the other seasons didnt
adventure and 02 were not about the characters but about there relationships, to there families and there friends, and by the end of the series yeah they do end up back where they started but thats cause each knew who they wanted to be, but the adventure was seeing them grow to where they wanted to be
