    To Kick off our new series of #tutorialtuesday videos, we're going to be looking at inserting 500 series modules into a DAW session!
    Thanks to #500R8, this has never been easier and in this video tutorial, Elliott walks us through how we can use 500 series modules directly in a DAW session like a software plug-in but by using the hardware insert functionality built-in to your DAW! He even explores a cool way of incorporating Mid/Side processing into your mix by using two different types of 500 series modules!

    I’m new to the 500 series and still trying to wrap my head around it. Is it possible to route different slots to different tracks in my DAW? For example, could I have compressors in slots 3/4 routed to my drum bus and EQs in slots 5/6 routed to my mix bus? Or does the whole rack need to be routed to the same track(s)?
    Also, is it possible to route multiple tracks through the same slots/units? In other words, can I have separate guitar, bass and piano tracks all routed to a unit in slot 7 for example?
    Sorry for the basic questions, but I’d really appreciate some help with this!

      Absolutely! This is exactly how most people use their 500R8s and their favourite 500 series modules with their DAW. The specific way of how to do this will depend on which DAW you use and how the routing works.

    Hello guys, thank you for making this interface and the ADAT model. I am starting to save to get the ADAT model. Just to be sure, does that mean I would get 8ins/outs and "extra 8ins/outs" because of the 500 modules? I.e. could I plug 4 stereo synths into these 8ins and outs line in, all while being able to route audio from my DAW to any 500 modules without having to sacrifice any of the 8ins/outs lines? Thanks

    Hey thanks for this video. I got a R8 a few months ago, used it for tracking and Im over the moon about the quality of the material I got. Now I am using it for processing signal from my daw to the R8 and back and I don't see to be able to get a stereo signal back, it's always a mono somehow. For example I am using a SPL BIG and what I get back is a mono signal. Any advice?

    I've been meaning to ask, since I will be getting both the R8 and the Camden soon; 1. in the manual for the Camden mic-pre it states that the Mojo dial is blending in the effect, like parallel mixing; is that the case? Reading the SoS review kinda made it unclear.
    2. When using an external clock via the BNC connector on the R8 are you using the inbuilt correction clocking as for the ADAT part or is the external clock 'fully' in control? I just wanna play around with my other clock to see if there is an audible difference clocking different devices, still keeping my Saffire56 for the Liquid channels - and my clock is a Black Lion with 0,6ps - so slightly less exact but...

      Hey Rob! The Mojo control is effectively blending in the Mojo'd signal into the dry path but the audible result is a bit more interesting that just a dry with mojo. The dry and wet signal interact in a very special way to form a more cohesive sound and Camden's linearity helps retain the punch and immediacy but combined with the Mojo gooeyness. When 500R8 is slaved to an external clock, it reads the incoming clock information and generates its own low-jitter recovered clock to

    Hi, Can this 500r8 feed a burl b32 thru the outs or inserts and return to the DAW2 input? The role of the b32 is for colouring only. Just trying to find a way to buy this but at the same time incorporate it with the b32.

      Hi Hadrian, I believe you're asking about incorporating outboard gear with the 500R8, which we have a video on here: ruclips.net/video/316zC3e7DgQ/видео.html . You can also utilise the inserts with the slots bypassed, meaning you can utilise the 500R8 as a straight DA/AD via the Burl and not have to process that audio via an addutional 500 module also.

    Hi Guys,
    within logic, is it possible to do this using slots 1 and 2 or is it not possible because logic always recognises those outs as the stereo outs?
    I have configured logic to use the 500R8 outs 9 and 10 and mirroring is deselected.
    I've read the manual and done a bit of digging and haven't been able to come up with the solution.
    I love the unit and the preamps, you guys have dome a great job !

      Hi Brendan! Yes you can do this, however you need to use an Audio MIDI Setup workaround - It's a shame Logic still has this strange bug however we can get you up and running! We have the workaround documented in the manual on page 51, but in effect, this will offset 500R8's channels by 2, allowing you to use all of the slot as normal! Hope this helps!

    3 questions lol.
    1. If i wanted to monitor my mix from the summing mixer outputs how would i set that up?
    2. If i wanted to then "print" my summed mix how would i do that.
    3. Is any of this possible without any 500 modules installed?

      Hi @kingfridayx!
      Thanks for the questions!
      1) You can monitor your Summing Mixer by turning the Monitor Blend control over to its Mix position. When the control is in that position you are hearing exclusively the Summing Mixer so you can build you mix up.
      2) All you need to do is setup a new track in your DAW with USB input 9/10 - that has a dedicated converter for the mix bus to allow you to record that summed mix as a stereo file back into your DAW.
      3) Yes, absolutely! Each slot can be bypassed and all functions operate as normal; we have a video about that too!

    Have you guys ever used this in Reason? If so, how would I set it up as a 2-bus with a Stereo Comp and EQ?

      We haven't used it personally with Reason but there is no reason why it would be any different to any other DAW! If you research the Hardware Insert functionality in Reason, you should be able to use that facility to send audio form Reason and out into 500R8. From there you can route audio from one module and into the next using analogue cables and then record that signal back in for printing. Hope this helps! CA

    Something that isn't mentioned at all and I didn't find out until I received my unit. You cannot use modules 1 and 2 in Logic without some real headache. This is why in all of these videos they don't use the first 2 modules ever. I've been trying to get their "workaround" to actually work for two hours now with no joy. Also, there is no phantom 48v power unless you buy a 500 series module that passes it through. So if you wanna record a mic with 48v, you have to have a 500 series pre amp that provides it. Just wanted to make people aware, because I did 6 months of research before buying this and never knew until I tried to set it up.

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Please note that we have now worked around Logic's patching bug issues in our latest v1.3 beta firmware update. You can find this in the Software/Firmware section of the 500R8 product page on our website here: www.cranborne-audio.com/500r8.
      We note on page 17 of the 500R8 manual that when module slots are bypassed, a line-level signal can still be recorded, meaning that if you require to process a Mic or Hi-Z level signal, you will need an appropriate module installed. As line level signal don't require phantom power, and when almost all 500 Series mic preamp modules include phantom power, it doesn't make sense to implement 48v natively on the 500R8.

      @@cranborneaudio The reason I commented this is because you guys are purposefully obtuse about these things. As you mentioned yourself, the only place this information is available is in the manual. Hence why I left the comment. Why didn’t you mention it in any of the videos you did in the “how to” series? I would have never known there was a fix for the logic bug if I hadn’t commented. You need to be a little more open about these things so that people can be aware of what they need to prepare for. I’ve had the unit for 2 days now and just in the last 30 minutes have I been able to use it as advertised. It would have been super simple of you guys made this type of information easily available. Again thanks for the fast response, your product is the best thing out. I’ve just been very frustrated trying to get it set up.

With regards to our latest firmware, because it is currently in public-beta, it very much had a soft rollout to our beta testers and subscribed email list. Now it is ready, we are working towards moving the current beta to full release, and so it will receive a 'louder' release at that point (functionally, nothing will change between the beta firmware and final release).       @@cranborneaudio Just wanted to update you. The firmware doesn't work. I get this message. “Cranborne Firmware Updater” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

    Quick question please, if you have one preamp in slot 1 and two mono compressor occupying slot 3 and 4 in an R8. But want to use only the compressors as stereo on the master buss in Protools for mixing. Will you be inserting I/O be 3-4 stereo? Or Insert 1-2? Also should the CAST knob be toggled to USB? This including the preamp in slot 1.

      Hi there, if you only want to use the compressors on slots 3-4 for your stereo mix, then you only need to toggle the Source select switch for slots 3/4 to USB and then send out of USB channels 3-4 on Pro Tools. If you do not want to apply the preamp in slot 1 on any track in your DAW, you can keep it set to 'ANLG'. Hope this helps! CA

      @@cranborneaudio thank you. I think I miscommunicated the slots numbers to you. If you do have the mono compressors on slot 2 and 3, can that same principle apply? I’m asking because my preamp is on slot 1 and the two compressors are in 2-3. On the Protools I/O I can only insert 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 and 9&10 being the monitor output. How can I configure the I/O to get those two compressors. For now, when I insert 3&4 I do get the signals on both compressors in slot 2 and 3 but only one compressor is actually working in slot 2 when I apply compression. I just want to make sure I’m setup right. Thanks again.

      @@auzonville8984 Oh yes - sorry about that! Unfortunately, this is a limitation of Protools and some other DAWs where they can only patch to odd-even pairs. The only way to get around it is to move stereo pairs to 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8. You can sometimes get around it by splitting the signal into two mono tracks and doing mono inserts on each for slots 2 and 3 - but that is a bit laborious. Sorry it's not more straightforward but most DAWs have this issue. Thanks again, CA

    What's the latency when actually used as an interface.? I'm having trouble finding that spec

      Hi Lee, it is very difficult to publish an official Latency figure as it varies so widely depending on machine performance. Some of our customers get as low as 2-3ms roundtrip, however others on machine with less power can get 5-6ms. Again it is impossible to put an accurate figure out there. We have designed the unit to have as low a latency as possible but a key part of the workflow is its analogue monitoring capabilities - which are all analogue and 100% 0 latency! Hope this helps!

      @@cranborneaudio definitely understand! So I would imagine this stacks well against apollo's apogee, antelope etc on terms of latency? Would it be of the equivalent there? Also, is there thunderbolt connectivity? Thanks so much for the reply, getting information gathered on 500R8 and hoping to pull the trigger at sweetwater on a new interface in two weeks. It's looking rather promising for 500R8. Beautiful system. By chance does it come with any Camden preamps standard? Or is it sold as only a shell unit..

    Just for my understanding.... i f i have a apollo 8 - i could use 2 Cranborne 500 adat Cases right?
    one Cborne 500 is set to Adat expantion and the other Cborne 500 is getting connected via the 8 outputs of the apollo 8 and the Cborne 500 mainoutputs are getting connected to two of Apollo 8 Inputs.... is this right?
    anybody got this Case running with Ableton and can tell how you would route your channels? I want to you use The 500 adat as tracking and Mixing... first getting two Cborne Preamps for Left and Right channel witch is feeded by a stereosynth. Followed by a compressor and followed by a Eq /after recording all the tracks in, via the same way / i can than use the Cborne 500 to sum all the tracks i made so far and send it back to ableton... am i on the right way? How do you guys use your Cborne 500 to get the job done? before i saw the Cborne i wanted a Dangerous music 2bus+ and some other gear... i could run the same just with this 500 case here, right?

      Hi there, You can indeed pair two 500ADAT's with an Apollo 8. You can connect both units to the Apollo via ADAT for ADAT expansion provided you don't record above 48kHz. You can then link the summing mixer together using Jack cables and then send the full summing mix out into the Apollo's input for a full 16 into 2 summing mix. If you record above 48kHz, then you can indeed patch them in the way you mentioned above. Hope that helps!

      Absolutely, if you're looking to use your 500R8 simply as a single channel strip comprised of 8 modules, simply input your audio to channel 1, then activate the 'Chain' switch on channels 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and then record to your DAW on channel 8.
