    This thing is incredible. I've been looking into 500-series gear for a bit now and thinking about how I'd integrate it with a DAW, but this makes everything so much simpler. The fact that the channels are still usable without populating the slots is great. You guys obviously put a ton of thought into the design and function of this product. I'm going to have to start saving up for one!
    The first module I put in it will be a Camden 500!

    Saving up for one to replace my aging FireWire interface after watching these videos and Glenn's review on SpectreSoundStudios. The amount of thought put into this thing is incredible. The ability to use the slots independently of the 500 series gear is essential to me... I want something I can start building over time but in the short term I just need a quality interface I can use to record at least 16 tracks simultaneously. In the short term I can use my small Mackie mixer via the analog inputs and my Focusrite via ADAT for preamps. In the long term I can gradually build up some 500 series gear to accompany it. The versatility of this design is incredible.

    This may be a dumb question, but I assume I could slave the R8 to my regular interface just like I could with the ADAT unit? The assumption being that this and the ADAT unit are the same, just + an audio interface.
    Getting a device like this would be quite a large step for me, but I can't help seriously considering it, seeing all the functions you crammed into this thing. It would solve the idea I have about a portable recording setup for on-location stuff, allow analog gear to be used with my DAW while at my home studio, and I assume, also work great if I wanted to build something like a live vocal setup, utilizing some analog compression, etc. Very compelling.

      In case anyone is interested I got this question answered by Cranborne, and the answer is no. The R8 can not be used as an ADAT :).

    I started out with a Camden EC1 and now I recently purchased a 500R8 along with 2 Camden 500s!! I love how easy it is using the Camden 500s in my DAW as inserts but I'm having a bit of trouble trying to do the same with my Camden EC1. How would I go about using my Camden EC1 as an analog insert into my DAW using one of the 500R8 slots?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  Год назад

      Hi there! Thanks for your kind words and thanks for your support! You can use your EC1 with your 500R8, but the best way would be to use it as an Insert. To do this, you will need an insert cable with TRS jack on one end and a female+make XLR on the other. We have a video about this process here too: ruclips.net/video/316zC3e7DgQ/видео.html

    Can you use the analog summing AND the 500 slots? Or is it all bypassed and no 500 gear or 500 gear but they have to be Preamps and run the analog summing through them?
    Sorry I'm new to analog summing and this unit.
    Like basically... Could I load it up with 500 EQs and run them as per normal 500 chassis but then still get analog summing for mixdown?

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 года назад

      Hi there, the slots are connected to the summing mixer, and so if you load the unit with EQs you can process your stems using the EQs, sum the signal using the summing mixer, and then record that back in to your DAW with one move! This is cool because you can build your own summing mixer with whatever selection of modules you own! Hope that helps!

    Hi!
    I expect my 500r8 to arrive on monday!
    I want to use it as my monitoring (main) interface and hook up my apollo 8 from 2015 via adat.
    Now I was wondering how to monitor those adat channels through the 500r8 and how to control those input levels. Or do I still need the apollo software to make that work?
    Thank you for your help😊

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  2 года назад

      Hi there! The ADAT channels are sent straight through to the DAW and so the only way to monitor them will be with your DAW directly! We chose not to have any software mixing on the unit to make the package more lightweight and less intensive on the CPU. If you have any more questions, please send us an email to our Support team and we can help you out! Thanks, CA 👍

    I'm new to having outputs on my hardware (coming from the Apogee Element) - can I run the module output directly into the input of the same channel? For instance, if I set a software synth to output 1, can I run it into my Camden 500 in slot 1/input 1 to colour it with the mojo? Btw I LOVE the camden pres, they blow me away.
    I tried this in Ableton but it made a loud screeching noise. I'm going through an external patch bay so perhaps that affected it. But then again, all my inputs are going through the patch bay and there is no issue with them.

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  2 года назад +1

      Hi there! Yes absolutely - this is one of the main purposes of the unit! If you are getting a feedback loop then it sounds as though you have a record or input monitor active which is causing the loop, however if you use something like Ableton's 'External Audio Effect' plug in. This should allow you to send the synth out of slot one, through the module, and back in without a feedback loop and without using another audio channel to record the audio back in. Give that a go and see how you get on! CA

      So I've figured out now how to use the outputs on my R8. The 'External Audio Effect' plug in helped, thank you! A simple issue I ran into was that I wasn't changing the toggle switch to 'USB' on the R8. I think I understand how this works now, but I want to double-check. So I can't use the output on Channel 1 simultaneously as the input for Channel 1, is this correct? So for re-amping purposes, I would have to use 4 channels for outputs, and the other 4 channels for inputs (or some combination, 2 outs, 6 ins etc). Is this right? Thanks

    Can you bypass few channels (for example like 3) to use external preamps and still use other 5 with 500 units. Im gona use blank panels for slots not using 500
    Also, does r8 work directly with pro tools? Or is there some software system like rme which i dislike cause for me it's too complicated, since im no mixing engineer. I just like to just track music and send it off to a mixing engineer
    Also i have rme 12mic preamps/ converters which has madi and adat outputs. It should pair well with r8? Is that good option?

    Could I integrate the channels of the Cranborne R8 and ADAT versions of the 500 series to the Merging Anubis interface via the AES67 standard with a ethernet cat5 or cat6 cable? I am wondering if the "C.A.S.T." connections on the Cranborne can comunicate without issues with my Merging Anubis through a Cat5 / Cat6 cable with Ravenna/AES67 standards.

      Hey there, sorry for the late reply - only just seen this question! If you want to record the 8 500 series slots as well as channels from your Midas console, you will need to expand 500R8 using an ADAT connection as there are only 8 converters built-in to the chassis. Hope that helps!

    Can anybody tell me how these converters pair up against Rme or UAD? Thanks!! what a well designed piece of gear!!

    • @brian018
      @brian018 Год назад +2

      Converters are pretty incredible! Wide, open, tall, clear (but not harsh), analog soundstage. I used UAD for 10 years and thought that would be all I needed, I still have the Apollo x8p but now only use for tracking or live. I found my mixes didn’t translate very well in the car and other systems with UAD. I thought it was that I just couldn’t mix very well (8 years of mixing).
      Once I got the Cranborne 500R8 everything translated perfectly. I was amazed! I had no idea converters made that much of a difference! Plus with the UAD I always fought to make all my tracks more powerful and sound tall, wide and big. Constant battle. With the Cranborne I find all of that is naturally there without trying and I’m more fighting to contain the power! What a different experience!
      I also find I am using about 50% less plug-ins because of this. Also, even if no modules are used, the digital harshness of a plug-in laden mix will benefit from being smoothed out and get a beautiful sheen from bouncing out through the Cranborne 500R8 just by using main (9-10) stereo mixbuss converters, not even using summing. I’m finding their converters to be so good I’m not caring about analogue summing that this box can also do.
      I like the sound of the 500R8 converters so much that the analog modules I have I feel also less reliant on. Wes Audio (Rhea, Prometheus, Hyperion) and SPL (BIG). I also have two of Cranborne Camden preamps, which sound amazing. The 3D dimensionality you get from Cranborne 500R8 and also through tracking with Camden preamps really “sets” the soundstage.
      I also found using some of the acoustica audio plug-ins (snow, like, taupe, navy, gold) to perfectly compliment the soundstage and tone of my mixes. At least for me.
      RME I can’t speak to, because I’ve never used any. But I’ve always heard good things about their converters. Hope this was helpful! Sorry for the information overload! I just know I spent years researching why my mixes didn’t translate to other systems and finally saw it was my speakers, my room, and my converters… not really my plug-in collection (though that helps :). Wanted to share all of this in hopes to make your gear journey easier.

      I can't tell the difference from my UAD X6, but if so then maybe slightly better with 500 ADAT clocking as master vs. just UAD X6. So in the end it's not worse than UAD X6 so I'm all good.

    This may be a total newb question but does the adat version function the same way? Example. Audient id22 to CB500 (ADAT). I have a few rackmount/desktop processors that I would like to mix through and sum. I plan to purchase a couple 500 series. Would the ADAT version allow me to connect via line in/out with my rackmount gear and into the summing of the CB500 and transfer back via optical to the audient? How would I go about printing the 2 track back into logic with this method? Thanks in advance!

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio  3 года назад

      Hi @IMNMEDIA KC, 500ADAT does work in a similar way! You can use all of the slots/conversion on the unit without any slots installed so can easily patch in your external units, sum everything together using the summing mixer and then record the 2-bus! On 500ADAT, the summing mixer has an analogue output so you would process and sum all of your tracks and record the main output of the summing mixer back into your Audient using a spare line input. Hope that helps!

      Hi there!
      If you want to patch in your limiter you will need to use 4 slots on 500R8 - 2 for send, 2 for return. You will need to send your audio out into slots 1-2 from your DAW (Slots set to USB) and then connect the outputs of slots 1-2 to your Limiter, and then the outputs of your Limiter to slots 3-4 (slots set to ANLG).
