- Bengali actor Anil Chatterjee speaks about a small role offered by Satyajit Ray to him for his film Devi. He says "Mr. Ray actually called me for his film Devi. Does a small role ...one day worth of a role but to me that was no hindrance. I was very happy because he had offered me this role. Of course, it's true that before this offer came in, we knew each other very well. As one of his blind admirers and in many ways, I could feel that he also liked me so there was sort of an understanding - the relationship was already there. So I started working under him in 'Devi'. That was a very pleasant experience. Some of my friends said ... Manik Da we call him. We call Satyajit Ray Manik Da. They said since Manik da takes even absolutely new artists, he will never face the camera. You are known and all that you can ask for is a bigger role. I said no no.. An offer from him is good enough but I think it will only be a very happy beginning and so it was because later on I did other films.... very famous films with him.
ANIL CHATTERJEE SAID: 'I ACTED IN HIS FILMS UNDER HIS SCRUTINY BUT NEVER FELT I WAS BEING GUIDED IN ACTING. THIS IS A GREAT CONTRIBUTION MANIKDA OFFERED TO EACH ACTOR AND ACTRESS. HIS STYLE IS INIMITABLE AND TOO HIGH TO MAKE A JUDGMENTAL COMMENT ON THE MAESTRO."
Anil Chatterjee in the Bengali cinema during the early fifties through the mid-nineties and is mostly remembered as a character actor. He acted or performed in about 150 movies, including a few in Hindi. He played different shades, though mostly as a character actor, as well as in leading roles and at times as an antagonist, despite the limited opportunities he received. Irrespective of the roles, he left an indelible impression on the viewers and the critics. He also acted in the leading role in a tele-serial named "Naqab" in the national network of Doordarshan. He is one of the very few selected actors who worked with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Tapan Sinha and Mrinal Sen; with the first three directors, he performed in more than a number of occasion. His performance in the title role of the film "Deshbandhu Chittaranjan" [a biopic on the noted and revered freedom-fighter and barrister Chittaranjan Das (1870-1925) who was conferred the title of "Deshbandhu (Friend of the Country)"] won the appreciation of Basanti Devi, the wife of the "Deshbandhu" (she is said to have personally blessed the actor).

I have seen Anil Chatterjee in bit roles in Hindi Film, he was one of those Rare Bengali Actors whose Hindi Diction was Flawless, He had an Awesome Presence, Really Loved his Performances. May God Bless your Soul. He would leave his mark even in a small role like Amanush.

He was a legend with simplicity and humbleness, which depicts and represent a real bhadralok of Bengali diaspora. Nowadays we have a different kind of Bengali (especially our CM and co.) who has not that quality but arrogance and loompen-like behaviour. My request to u like non-Bengalis that u shouldn't misunderstand them with the Bengalis before.

I watched some films played by him, he is very good actor and maybe better than Uttam in those characters he played.
Definitely a better actor than Uttam Kumar. No doubt absolutely. What he did in Ghatak's Meghe Dhaka Tara bears testimony of his brilliant instinctive acting.
@@shuvamghosh81 Thanks for adding your opinions. It is my opinion, may contradict with other people, but I don't mind. It is my own opinion. I'm not a film critic and watched many Bengali films in the past, but I watched many European films, but not many Hollywood films(Don't like all films, some oldies are good movies). My favorite films are old French and Italian made in the '50s to '80s. I watched those movies with Russian dubbing, recently in French(I'm not so good in French than Russian)
Even Uttam Kumar admired his (Anil Chatterjee's) acting capability. He was very able actor unless he couldn't act in both Ray and Ghatak's directions who were far different from each other in their direction capacities. However it's my own opinion.
My favourite actor probably most favourite. Apart from Satyajit Roy, I think,he was suitably utilised by Tapan Sinha in his films like harmonium,..... etc.
