      White Smoke can also appear on older, carburetted cars, if the Air/Fuel Mixture (A/F Ratio) is too lean. This increases horsepower and high end torque, and the engine will use less fuel from its tank. But the engine will run much hotter, which means its likely to overheat with stock radiator on a warm summer day. Ratio should Not be lower than 13,2...
      Black smoke indicates a very rich A/F Ratio, leading to a cooler, more driveable engine with quite enough low-end torque and less stressed parts. A rich adjusted carb will make less mileage per gallon, but it doesn't burn the spark plugs so often. Ratio should not exeed 16
      I used to have a 47cc moped from 1985, of course carbed (1.1 CFM) generating 1,5 Hp and Running ~30 Mph (45 Km/h). It wasn't tuneable, so i just drilled some holes in the airfilter cover and closed them with duct tape till it run well. It was a 2-stroke, and i had to change the spark plug 1 to 2 times a Year. Of course, two stroke engines burn their plugs way faster than 4-stroke, so i think it was set quite rich, maybe 14,5 to 15...

    What if the "ambient temperature" is fairly cold (say 0 C/32 Fahrenheit or a few degrees colder)? Could you then expect white smoke even after having driven 20-30 minutes? Also, is the fact that the car is not leaking/loosing coolant a not as reliable sign of possible blown head gasket if it is winter and colder than in the summer when it is wormer? Thanks in advance!

    That first point was wrong, it isn't excess fuel. It's because there isn't enough air relative to fuel so the fuel is not able to completely combust, soot is a biproduct of incomplete combustion and so that's what it is.

    • @kavikumar1008
      @kavikumar1008 7 лет назад +6

    One note, on older Honda's theres something called an automatic transmission modulator that operates with vacuum, when the modulator fails it can suck trans fluid into the intake manifold causing white, sharp scented smoke (it also super cleans the engine and will slowly result in running low on trans fluid). You can tell if the modulator failed by simply chking the vacuum line for fluid, there shouldnt be any.

    Sup guys, I got a quick question. I have a 2006 Mitsubishi Evo IX and all the performance mods I've done are just a cold air intake, a Tomei turbo and a catback muffler delete. The rest is stock and I've just done a lot of cosmetic work. From time to time though, when I start the engine, it emits thick sky blue colored smoke from the exhaust. It seems to dissipate when I drive but when the car comes to a stop and it idles, it makes knocking noises under the driver's seat and the blue smoke comes out again. Plz help.

      Is it bad to flush dollars down your toilet? Because you're flushing dollars out of your tailpipe.
      Oh sure, small numbers like 22mpg vs 28mpg are not huge - but it would take your gas bill from $2k/yr to $2545/yr if you drive a decent amount... it'd be worth it to me to fix it and see how much mileage improved.

    • @MrGuvEuroman
      @MrGuvEuroman 8 лет назад

      Yes because you get "bore wash" you fire that much fuel in it washes the oil off the bores, halving the engines life.
      That's why you're oil level never goes down the injectors are topping you're sump up 👍

  • @actschp1
    @actschp1 8 лет назад +1

    As an engine mechanic, he greatly over simplified the white smoke portion of the video. In some cases, yes, it is only water vapor. But if you get a large enough coolant leak, even then it won't produce the large amounts of white smoke shown in the video. In fact, most of the time, you won't even know that you have a large coolant leak into your cylinders until you get the warning light on, telling you that your coolant level is low, followed rapidly by your engine overheating. You can only get the huge level of white smoke produced from a big diesel engine (like the cement truck in the video) if there is a large oil leak from the turbo, allowing oil to be burned in the combustion chamber. Or in case of the Chrysler 300 shown, a blown head gasket, allowing oil in to the cylinders.

    A vehicle can have an oil burning or mixture control problem but you still may not have any visible emissions coming out the tail pipe. This can happen because the catalytic converter is doing its job and cleaning the exhaust before it comes out. The only way you may become aware of these problems is either by getting a check engine light and trouble codes or by having the spark plugs foul and having to add oil all the time. Further if you run a engine too long with these problems you can damage the converter. Then after that you will begin seeing visible emissions.

    Great video guys!

    • @Senekha86
      @Senekha86 8 лет назад +3

      As Chris Williams already mentioned it is absolutely ok. In fact it is pretty much normal cold start behavior, specially in colder (< 5°C) conditions. The engine is really cold and to warm it up faster or just to hold the minimum revs (to not stall) is to rich up the fuel mixture - specially to start the engine itself. You may have a slightly higher rpm in the first 30s or so too. I have a Golf VI 1.4 TSI (next engine generation to yours) and my default RPM is about 700 and in cold conditions for the first few seconds often at about 1100 rpm.

    • @Stryke607
      @Stryke607 8 лет назад +3

      For starting, modern engines will adjust the fuel mixture, like a choke did back in the days. Once it is running and starting to warm up, they go back to the normal, much more efficient mixtures and put out much less emissions.

    • @danielfl.9347
      @danielfl.9347 8 лет назад

    My BMW has white smoke when I start it up, mostly from a cold start, but goes away after some time as I drive it/ as it warms up. I don't know for sure if it's steam or actual smoke, because it does smell, but that might be the actual exhaust fumes and steam mixing together. I did have a leak in my gasket, and was repaired.
