Thanks Gregg. You've provided the exact description I need for an upcoming repair to a Hobie i12s inflatable. The hull is PVC , 8 years old and in need of a large amount of old glue removed. It's nice to read that your repair has held up as long as it has.

Video a while back and still very relevant - I'm working this same process. Thanks very much.
10' zodiac/ transom replacement. I like the use of the non- scuff spoon sir.

Glue joint finally failed, I’m not doing this job again I don’t have the time. If anyone is interested in the tube set it’s for a Zodiac Yachtline 480DL, send me a message

Note: it's been 7 months and 100 hours on the hull and the adhesive is holding just fine.

Hi Gregg, I've seen videos of pros using horse hair polishing wheels to remove glue, have you tried this, do you think this would damage PVC tubes?

He said he used: 50% acetone and 50% MEK (Methyl ethyl ketone).
Can you write on info what you are using?

My inflatable’s floor was teared only about 50cm from tube. Should I strip the floor out completely to reapply the glue or should I fix only to the teared part. I’m afraid the residual glue in corners cannot be scraped if the bottom is not taken out completely.

Thanks. My Zodiac RIB Rope strip just failed. Cleaning the glue off tube is KEY.... and on the rope strip too. What glue product did you use?

Zodiac OEM from the dealer it cost around $100. Comes in a 750ml can with 3 separate bottles of activator so you don’t have to use it all at once it can be broken into 1/3 batches. Has a shelf life of 1 year so check the date. 🙂

I'm not sure that lacquer thinner will get you the results as I have not tried it. Bear in mind that the rubber cement is extremely resistant to almost everything and it needs to be completely removed from your surfaces to ensure proper adhesion

Have you made a video showing the next step of glueing the bottom on?

No, the glue joint I worked on is a bolt-rope attachment system. They heat welded a flange around a rope which attaches to the tube set. It runs the length of the boat. There is a channel cut into the hull which the tube set then slides into from fore to aft on both sides. There is an apron welded onto the set which is secured at the bow. As far as I know, Zodiac is the only manufacturer that uses this method. If you are glueing the set to the hull, I would use the standard 3 coats of cement per mating surface but you would need a few people to help lower the tube set to the hull. read: you only get one shot at it. Once the two surfaces touch, they ARE stuck.

is acetone totally safe to use on PVC? will it not soften the surface of the PVC itself?
and can you please let me know what you are combining the acetone with - I was thinking of using 1:1 water and acetone, you seem to be using something else? thank you!

Do you know if MEK by its self is ok to use or must it be mixed with acetone? We talked with a repair shop and they suggested mek replacement, but we can only find MEK.

50/50 MEK and Acetone. MEK evaporates rapidly and the acetone slows it down
