    • @lesliepaulkovacs6442
      @lesliepaulkovacs6442 5 лет назад +3

      Concur. My reasons why. They're NOT One-Off Customs that you'll be crying over 30 years from now if you lose it somehow. So you can replace them when you come back. You'll probably be using the Pukko a Lot, but it's built to be USED. The Atrox gives you Back Up Wood Chopping if you break your Ax or Saw ("Shit Happens"- Murphy), plus a Defensive Capability against Predators (both 2 AND 4 Legged). But I'd keep it at Base Camp. And I'd have a Strong Locking Folder in a pocket, Just in Case. Hope this helps.

      Hahaha! I was thinking the same thing! But I was thinking one of those Victorinox (sp?) With only 1 blade, a file and a pair of scissors that run around $10 US. I know it's a really inefficient tool for the challenge, but that's exactly why I was thinking about it. (My thoughts were more like "It's a really stupid idea, but it would be a REAL challenge!" Followed by an "evil" chuckle.)

    I would say the Varusteleka Jäkkari Puukko. You need to remember that you WILL need to sharpen your knife.. and having a super duper hard knife will make sharpening very hard! I have first hand experience in this.
    so i would say:
    Knive: Varusteleka Jäkkari Puukko
    Machete: Fiddleback forge (eventhough i would love to see that Katana xD)

    Because there is a big difference between "survival" and an adventure in the wood I will take the more basic knife AKA Nora . Like that your skills will show how you can deal with all that you need to do with a simple blade. I travelled around the globe and to my experience its often the knowledge / lack of training that is failing , rarely the lack of gear.

    hard to pick the second if we don't know if you're also bringing an axe saw multi-tool etc and which ones...

  • @backwoodsbrooksknives4625

    You should probably go with your spoon knife, a skinner like the Kc skinner that only touches food and game, a utility knife like the 5 inch pukko, and a large chopper like the 5160 blade. (I'm partial to 5160, I make all my knives out of that) But I would personally take four just because if I use the chopper for processing fire wood and the spoon knife and utility knife for wood working and carving, I would want to also have a knife that I know will stay super sharp for skinning out game and processing food so I wouldn't have to be sharpening my utility knife every time I need to skin an animal or clean a fish. Just my philosophy, since I am a knife nut and would be rather tool heavy than wishing I had a certain tool and not having one. Zachary is probably bringing his shovel too so that would make an optimal tool pack so long as you have a saw and something to drill holes like an awl on a leatherman.

      @backwoodsbrooksknives4625 5 лет назад

      I would be happy to send you a knife. Here's an idea. If you and Zachary get to thinking about certain attributes you would want in a knife after your 30 day challenge, shoot me an email at backwoodsbrooksknives@gmail.com with a design and I will try to make two identical knives for you two. I do all of my forging by hand so minor differences are bound to happen.

    The spoon knife. The minihunter for skinning, you will probably skin mostly small things. Then any one of your other knives that you have tested thoroughly. Don't bring a huge knife, because you'll need to do some whittling to assist and perfect your delicate spoon carving craftsmanship.

  • @alanwilliams5836

    Chris... Texas is a big place with a wide variety of climate, vegetation, and wildlife. What part of Texas is this challenge going to take place in? Central Texas has a lot of shrubs... great for machetes, while east Texas has larger trees... better for big choppers. Skinning a squirrel is different than cleaning fish. Southern Texas is more prone to rusting carbon blades, whereas in northern Texas... carbon blades wouldn't be a problem. Can you tell us the region of Texas you guys are going to be in? It would be easier then to select knife choices to suggest. Thanks buddy. Looking forward to this.

    I watch your channel to learn about outdoor tools so I can’t recommend to you as I don’t know much.
    But logically speaking I would have 1 reliable knife full tang sturdy knife that can be easily sharpened with good size for bushcraft.

    I would take my Kabar Becker bk7. Of those I would take the Condor atrox and mora bushcrafter.

    My choice from what you've said all around has got to be the KC trail knife and also I'd take the KC companion knife in Elmax. Both seem like great knives, and I'm sure they make an amazing pair.

    I have that same Mora hook knife, and if you plan to keep it in your pack, I have a recommendation for you. I went to the hardware store, and bought a short length of PVC pipe that the knife fit in fairly snug, glued a cap on one end, and sanded the outside of the pipe on the other so that the cap was decently easy to remove, but still stayed on in pack. I wrap the knife in a red shop towel, and slide it in the pipe, so when I reach into my pack it does not bugger my hand. it also serves to protect the sharp edge. I shot it with some black spray paint just to make it not blaring white.
