- My DREAM HOUSE!!! If you’ve ever seen “Under the Tuscan Sun”, then you know what I’m talking about. On our recent trip to Italy, we stumbled upon this estate that’s currently for sale in Alessio’s hometown. It’s about a 5 minute walk from the central piazza, and the estate consists of about 7 buildings totaling 8,800 square meters. It needs a LOT of work, but I might be up to the challenge. Plus, an old castle for this price??? Im really considering it!!

Buy the house…the fixing up will be amazing content. Then rent out the church for weddings. And Airbnb the second house. It’ll practically pay for itself!

"It’ll practically pay for itself!" AHAHAHA I'm sorry but I'm quite amazed at how people don't have a clue. On an average reno you need around 1000€/sqm , and I'm pretty sure for this estate you'll need at least double that. So let's do a basic multiplication, 8.800 x 1000 = 8.8M€ and this is to start only. Then you have all the maintenance costs, property taxes, heating expenses and so on. The owners are most likely trying to flog the place because it's a money drainer.
@@MadeinEataly i was thinking same, having been working on renovating places before they come out for sale i can say it always takes double the estimated time and double the cost if you are lucky, it can go as high as it wants depending on what surprises come up

Risky strategy unless your house is worth a lot. Because restoration of a castle always costs way more than what you think it will. Why do you think a lot of these castles are for sale, because the cost to keep them maintained was just too high. I only say this to make sure they have really done the numbers as often the fantasy leads you out of reality.
Don't blame the country on expensive healthcare here. Guess who messed it up? Trial lawyers, overly litigious people and mostly POLITICIANS! That last group needs to get out of healthcare because everything they touch turns to crap.
And there is real food.

I love that movie, it’s one of my favorites. It’s also one of the reasons why I wanna visit Italy one day. You should definitely buy it!
They are now selling a Liberty villa with its garden in my city and it’s 290k. I dream of it every night. It’s not a castle but it feels like it. Obviously it needs to be renovated. Something people ignore (which I know very well because my husband and I have already renovated two houses built in 1700), is that when you renovate historical buildings you must always co-work with Beni Architettonici. You can’t do whatever crosses your mind even the material that you use and then if don’t stick to the rules you risk jail. This because in the past (especially in the 60s) people didn’t even mind ruining historical buildings and didn’t fully stick to the regulations. It’s not sth extra that you pay but any project must be approved firstly by Beni Architettonici. They control everything, even the materials that you use. Despite this, you can still find solutions that work with sth that can be barely modified. One of our houses from 1700 has a geothermal system with heating and cooling floors, it’s a smart house, it’s interactive and you can reset and set anything from your phone.

In my parent's region (vi) all historic buildings needed to be restored to original specs, meaning that if the original house had no running water, or electricity, then tough cookies. Which is why many ancient farm houses are being left to collapse, because once the building falls down on its own, then the owners are are allowed to tear it down and rebuilt. Quite sad.

I was scared I was going to see a spirit when you put the phone up to the windows haha! So much history to these old Italian buildings! Everything is made to last lifetimes, even though they look run down (some of them) they are still structurally sound! My husband and I have been dreaming of moving to Italy for some time. I love the Lombardy region.

Omg!!! This castle is so cheap! The area is absolutely gorgeous! I would buy it right now if I could. Go for it, and purchase a literal dream. I could become a princess and live my dream of living somewhere magical The state of the area looks, fine. If there are any problems idc I can fix it! If you don't mind me asking, where in Italy is your husband from? I would love to search up the area.
It's cheap because it needs a lot of renovation. I don't mind fixing it too. I'm looking for castle in Italy too.

That castle is way cheaper than a 3 bedroom cookie cutter home in a typical American/Canadian/Australian suburb!

I need information like the name of the mortgage company who gives you the money to buy it and the website to look for properties like this.
So $272,700 as of right now. Not bad. You are getting a lot whereas here in America there are homes with a postage stamp size piece of property for that much. It would make a great Air BnB or a fabulous destination wedding venue. Or both. That area with the walls on either side that Alessio said wasn’t cleaned up would be a beautiful bridal photo area. The whole thing could be offered as a package deal. Everyone would stay there, have the rehearsal dinner there, the wedding in your chapel (or have another building available if someone doesn’t want a religious ceremony) and then the reception in the larger building. You would need to concern yourselves with ground transportation to wherever the airport is located. I think I would start out as Air BnB to get a cash flow going and then go from there! But that’s just me. It’s an awesome idea. I did see Tuscan Sun and I was ready to move after that. Actually my heart flopped out of my chest and took up residence on the Amalfi coast! The red cross on the chapel door looked like something from the shield of a knight. If they hadn’t ceased activities in the 1300’s I would have suggested the Knights Templar. Well, I hope you got it. Every princess should have a castle!

In Italy is super expansive to work on old houses to get them back in the original shape, the only way to get the money back is to turn the property into a bnb

Yeah.., it's only 250000 euro.., but then you need to renovate it, another 500000 euro at least, and you need to take care of it. So eventually you will pay way, way more. But there are lot's of people doing it in either France (also a lot of castles there) and Italy.

Yeah, but just because the initial purchase price is doable doesn't mean the rest is going to be, old castles have a reputation for being money pits. Don't get me wrong, the idea of a castle in Italy is such a romantic fantasy, who wouldn't consider it?
