I was at one of my local nurseries here in Olympia, Washington last month and stumbled across this beautiful plant. I bought three of them; two I put in big pots and one is going in the ground. So thankful to have this information.
This is exactly what I need to know. Gaura with its wispy stems that dance in the garden simply take my breath away. Thank you!!
Love gaura I have planted them everywhere everywhere everywhere
Best tutorial on when to prune & cut back perennials. Thank you!
Wish I would’ve seen this before I trimmed it down to the ground last fall
Thank You for this video we bought 2 just before winter ready for this year. With the cold weather we’ve just had ( in Portishead, about 10 days) it looks quite dead but listening to what you have said I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will come back. Brill video! 🌸
Thanks! Will give this a try and keep my fingers crossed !
Thank you! Your videos are fantastic. Appreciate this one so much.
Thank you! Exactly what I needed to know and you made it look and sound so simple!!
Thank you. This was my first year for gara and love it.
Many many thanks Rosie...advice and guidance always simple & straightforward
Awesome! I'm in love with Gauras yet I know so little about them and I really find it VERY HARD to trim, in fact butcher, all these wonderful stems dancing so gracefully in the air-OMG how am I going to part from them? It gives me the chills already...Yet I will absolutely do whatever's good for my Gauras. And I place MY TRUST in you Rosy. Thank you very much from Greece!
Thank you for posting this very helpful information. I just received one from my sister that has brown stems. I've planted it and will cut back the stems in late February/early March in hopes of having beautiful blooms after that.
Very interesting. Thank you.
THANKS!!!
I have just bought 2 of these plants from my garden centre.. they had them reduced from £12.00 to £3.00 might nip back and get the white ones if theres any left haha thank you for the information...
Hi! I love this and thank you for the tip! Do you have a video on how and when to split the plant and or propagate?
Thank you for the video, I'm in Canada and I did not my Guara back at all this year. I'm hoping that it survived our cold winter. I think maybe if it doesn't survive this year I will cover it with burlap next winter or dig it out and pot it and store it inside my unheated garage along with my potted Hostas and Anemones that come back year after year. Do you have any advice for cold climates? I hate treating this beautiful plant like and annual and having to buy a new one year after year.
Brilliant! Ive just grown my first Gaura from seed. Not sure when to plant out - it’s autumn here in nz. Spring?
Wow I have been looking to figure out how to trim this plant I love it flowers are still blooming it’s alittle more thin but didn’t know when I should cut it. We in October ending soon I would think I should go around and cut everything now before it’s too cold.
I pruned it today ! Let's hope for a pompeux spring !🤞🏻
So after the February cut to the ground, can you 'Chelsea Chop' the new growth around May time for a slightly later more compact growth with shorter flowering stems? Or should I just leave it? And if I prune after flowering can I get a second flush?
Cheers
PS. Love your videos.
One of my favourite plants since discovering it a couple of years ago. Was frightened to cut it to ground level as per the tag on the pot but this has given me confidence. Do you think now (early April) is too late to cut to ground level?
Hi Rosie, A gaura lover here. Moved to zone 9A and planted a few to see how they'd do. They did not like the very hot summer so I cut them back. They made it through. A little frost damage in Dec but they are still with me.
My Q: they now have very woody stems. Should I cut them way back, take cuttings or leave them alone.
Thanks.
I'm from South Africa. Bought my 1st gaura last month and looks.dead. just found the video and will cut it back
I am in zone 5B, will this work?
Does the flower seed regrow?
I live in high desert in California 2:13 how do care for gaura in the winter We sometimes have with degrees as low 20 degrees
Great advice. What the lowest temperature they will tolerate over winter when dormant?
My question as well! We get into the low 30s here in Northern California. It made it thru last winter so I think it’ll be ok. Best of luck to you!
In my climate (Finland) I cannot leave the gaura out for the winter. I grew my gaura out of seed this spring, they are now in my border. In order to save them from the winter, I suppose I have to dig them out and put in a pot. How would you advise me to get them through the winter? Temperature, light and water requirements?
Please tell me if I should keep watering the Gaura once I have trimmed the flowers off in readiness for winter?
