Playing _Outer Wilds_ pass-the-controller style with my partner is legitimately maybe one of my favourite gaming experiences of all time. I hope you and your friend have a great time with it. ::)
One thing I've always LOVED about the puzzles in Outer Wilds is that they aren't there just for the sake of being puzzles in your way, like almost every single puzzle game out there. Think about it. So many games make a puzzle that's there just for you to solve them, but when you think about it for more than 5 seconds, you'd realize that, in-universe and lorewise, there's no reason why a person would build such a puzzle there in the first place, thus plenty of games (Myst games come to mind, and stuff like Realm of Illusions) tend to have puzzles that, albeit good and tough, are just that. Puzzles. Not an actually, well-thought out in-universe reason for why it's there. But here? Everything is so "perfectly" thought out. Some puzzles are just puzzles because that's how the world is (getting under that island on Giant's Deep, or getting to the tower of Quantum Imaging on Giant's Deep, or traversing Brittle Hollow, or even figuring out how to get to Solanum, or entering Interloper, etc.), while some puzzles, like figuring out the Ash Twin Project, etc, none of those things feel like "someone put them there to thwart your progress", but they're just "there", and you're stumbling upon them with no knowledge of how they function, and just slowly learning. THAT is one of the things that makes this game so good, and why it's such a good "non-puzzle" puzzle game. I've also heard that people compare Tunic to Outer Wilds, that it's a game you should go in blindly, and that, if you like Outer Wilds, you'll like Tunic, so I'm looking forward to playing that as well, and I'll leave the recommendation here in case anyone else wants it!
SAME. For the first ~15 hours of my gameplay, I was thinking "how is this even a puzzle game?" (Granted, the last game I played before it was Superliminal, which is very traditionally puzzle solving for the sake of puzzle solving, although it's dream-absurdity so it also makes sense in-universe and lore-wise, but in a completely different way.) I think of Outer Wilds as primarily an exploration and mystery game, and puzzle game third. Yeah, there are puzzles, but most of them don't FEEL like puzzles...they feel like real world application problem solving. Hardly any of the barriers felt like they were there JUST to be a barrier. Everything is so seamlessly integrated into the world, and feels completely natural. This door is broken? This entrance is caved in? Yeah, it's been nearly 300,000 years since anyone's used it. Find another way in. And so many of the puzzles require you to just pay attention to your surroundings and using the environment and time to your advantage. On the note of Tunic, I tried playing it after finishing Outer Wilds, but I was still way too hyperfixated on Outer Wilds to enjoy it...and I wasn't in the mood for something with combat. But I can tell I'll enjoy it. I'll probably try picking it up again soon.
Tbh the Myst series is actually one of the better series about justifying their puzzles. I mean, not ALL of them, unless you count all the puzzles as an obtuse security system, but Riven in particular is a super organic world where the puzzles are laid out in service of the world building. The entire game has like two or three major puzzles but you have to understand the world to solve them. I think Outer Wilds is practically a direct refinement of Riven's design. (Incidentally, I went to a night of D&D wearing an Outer Wilds shirt and a Riven hat, and my friends said "you certainly have a type..." 😅)
Thanks for the 0:30 Warning. I have much respect for your approach. I bought the game but don't have much time with it, I will exit the video, and I hope to come back once I finish it; here is a like to the video in the meantime.
When you're done with your playthrough let us know how it went and maybe a few intresting moments. Reading about someone else's first playthrough is always a treat.
One of my favorite things about this game is that once you complete it, you crave game-plays like these. Chasing that feeling that the game brought us. No other game has made me think about my own existence more than this. One of the greatest games ever created, thanks for the content
Yes! We can't experience it again ourselves but watching someone else go through the process of discovery lets us sort of live vicariously through them. It's addicting.
Absolutely! I just played the game finally a few days ago when the physical version released for switch so this video couldn't have come at a better time.
@@eleuuuuu It depends on what you are looking for. A lot of people on the subreddit compare the game to Subnotica. I personally would add Return of the Obra Dinn. Chants of Sennar and Tunic are world class, but I'll check out rain world.
I absolutely love at 40:10 when he's watching the EXACT MOON he was talking about and doesn't realize it. Realizing that in game for me was mindblowing
My favorite thing about this game is the how the DLC is introduced. It uses the same element of "knowledge" being the only thing blocking your progress, so that when you start, it feels like a new location that was always there the whole time
what I love, is all the mechanics to solve the DLC is speedrunning tactics. Not gonna list them, cuz it's spoilers, but its so funny and very thematic with the DLCs theme
@@0seele SPOILERS FOR DLC Dying to enter the virtual reality (killing yourself on fire) Jumping in the tunnels while on raft (going out of bounds) Leaving light behind (progressing without ship)
Outer Wilds, in my opinion, is perhaps the most perfectly artistic game I have ever experienced. The utterly beautiful graphics, the unique mechanics, the fascinating and bittersweet story, the iconic planets, and the amazing cultural design of both the Hearthians and Nomai. But most of all, it does something unlike any other game I’ve played: It doesn’t tell you the rules. This is a game about discovery, about learning how the physical laws of this place work. From how stars expand and die, to how quantum structures and black holes form, to the behavior of wildlife and the discovery of clues. It’s an incredible experience that I wish I could play again, and left me a profound sense of both dread and hope about our place in the universe.
You must have a small game library if you’ve never played another game that doesn’t tell you anything. No insult intended, and it is very very rare if you’re a younger person because most games now a days are spoonfed.
@@dakotataylor993Allow me to clarify my statement: What I mean is, the game itself is the discovery of said mechanics. Some games might have you figure it out as you play, but I’ve yet to see anything done in the way Outer Wilds does. If you know all the details of this game, you can beat it in a matter of minutes. There are no ‘checkpoints’ or arbitrary locks, everything in the game is accessible if you figure out how it works. The only thing stopping you is lack of knowledge, and as you explore the world, said knowledge lets you expand further. From determining how Angler Fish are blind, to imaging the Quantum Moon, to discovering the rotations of cyclones on Giant’s Deep. It’s basically a game of science, not in the sense it’s realistic but in the sense that you can create theories and test various solution. I’ve played many games over time, and few use information as a barrier in quite this way.
This is my favorite game of all time. I’m really glad he played it, but I cannot stress enough how you can’t play this game in one sitting. It is incredibly draining if you do that, and you’ll also lose a ton of time to process information you’re given and feel more stressed and likely have a harder time finding solutions to things in the game. Very glad Connor played it though, it might expose more people to this wonderful and beautiful game. If you haven’t played it and you’re reading this comment, stop watching the video and reading this comment and go play the game completely blind. You’ll be in for quite the ride. Edit: Also when people say they wish they could erase their memory of something so they could go back and experience it again with the first time, Outer Wilds is literally that game. You can only experiment it once, and once you do, you will never be able to play it the same way EVER again. So again, if you have any interest in this game and don’t know what it is, go play it for yourself because you only get one first play through, meaning one genuine experience of learning the game’s secrets
@@noodlelynoodle. the average is 21 and a half to 22 fittingly enough. It takes most people (and myself) that long to finish it. I don’t think you should do that in one sitting. Connor finished it quickly because 1, he wanted to play it in one sitting, and 2, chat would help him out whenever he was genuinely stumped and it’s something he had learned previously. The game on a normal play through really takes another 5-6 hours to see everything (which is almost a necessity with Outer Wilds). And besides, even 16 hours is incredibly long, and for a game like this, incredibly stressful and draining
@@noodlelynoodle. ignoring the fact that 16 hours is an insane amount of time and would in fact tire out most normal people. this game is literally all knowledge, shoving like 16 hours of information into your head without giving yourself rest is not only incredibly tiring and mentally taxing but youll also forget like half the things you learn since you dont give your brain time to process and turn what youve learned into deep memory
@@TheCac it just depends on the person cause 16 hours isn't that long when you really get into something, like the most I've gotten up to on accident without realizing how much time had passed cause I was so into it was 36 hours straight 2 days in a row and I wouldn't even consider myself close to like a "hardcore" gamer. And at least for me games like that where they are knowledge based playing them all in one sitting makes the most sense cause most of the stuff isn't stuff that's ever going to be put into my long term memory cause it's simply not important enough for it too meaning if I split it off into 2 sessions I'll have forgotten way more than if I just kept playing but then again I am someone who prefers to binge everything even like college classes by doing the summer ones that are 1/3 the days but cover the same amount, I absorb more when it's crammed together into a short time frame than if it's drawn out over days or weeks
I played this game during lockdown and was pretty depressed at the time. This game offered me two things I really needed: freedom and a new outlook. When I played Outer Wilds, I was free to explore, free to shoot my ship off in a direction and see what's going on and what I discovered was actually meaningful and interesting and poignant. It also changed my outlook. I was scared of things to come and outer wilds reminded me to take a breath, relax and accept some things as they are and fight like hell to change the things I can and make them better. It will always be important to me. I hope the creators of this game know how meaningful and beautiful their game is and I hope it's legacy carries on with some of the greats.
I actually played Outer Wilds earlier this year, after being really hesitant for so long. Never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I did. I never take the warnings of "Play first, watch later" seriously, because I know I'll just forget, but Outer Wilds is probably one of the extremely few games I *genuinely* recommend people play first, watch later. Can't imagine what my experience would've been like if I had never seen it before.
1:56:40 Props to the editor for putting Solanum's musical theme as the background music for this moment. It's my favorite subtle track from the OST and placing it with the scene with my favorite character brought tears to my eyes.
If I may quote another youtuber, "IN MY OLD AGE, DEMENTIA ISN'T A CURSE,. NAY, IT IS A BLESSING. BECAUSE THAT MEANS I CAN PLAY OUTER WILDS ALL OVER AGAIN." -Bricky
*Major spoilers* When I played first played the game, that Big Bang at the end gave me a feeling I've never had before nor since. Not just the essence of it, but also the way it was presented. You're finally at the end, about to see the true meaning behind everything, your curiosity is going crazy, things go silent and then BOOM. Everything lights up lights fireworks and the music screams you in the face. Most videos I've seen don't capture this, but in game the sheer volume of that segment literally almost blows your ears out. This game would have been a 10/10 with just its exploration and puzzle mechanics, but the fact that the game asks you to find the answer to the ultimate question of the universe and then gives an actual satisfying answer that fits the narrative and also teaches real world lessons about death and endings, that instantly takes took game to 15/10. Holy shit, i want humanity to invent neuralizers so freaking bad.
I like this new style of editing Connor had taken. These gameplay videos i usually have on my monitor just playing for background noise, now is actually my central focus XD. The style of editing and way he commentates genuinely makes me so interested in the game. And this makes me feel like he genuinely loves the game he is playing snd is interested in it! Sometimes when Connor plays it feels like he isn’t enjoying it, but with this new style of commentary it really feels like he’s passionate. I love it.
ngl like many people i was disappointed to see connor playing this all in one go but i'm so so glad to see how much he still enjoyed it despite the 16 hr grind!! as tempting as it is to backseat this kind of game, the joy in seeing someone else get to experience outer wilds in all of its endless mysteries and wonders is unmatched. can't wait to see him play the DLC!!!
Void Stranger into Outer Wilds, truly we are blessed this month Outer Wilds is such an amazing experience and there's truly very few gaming experiences that are similar and executed so well
You come to this game for the fun idea of exploring a solar system and the cute designs, you stay for the existential cosmic dread and Majora’s Mask mechanics. Also idk what it is about this games ending that gets me so emotional…I think I just have a pretty bad fear of death or even the end of existence. And yeah, when you first get to the eye, it’s legitimately terrifying when you know your whole world is now gone and destroyed, but the way it ends with the characters around the campfire, playing one last song all together this time and accepting the end of the universe…fuck, man, it brings me to tears. Maybe it makes that fear all the more bearable that gets me emotional.
This game brings such a beautiful catharsis to the end of everything. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Except this game made me feel like it was okay to do both.
This game fucks. I’ve bought it for two people just to watch them play because can’t relive this game. It genuinely felt like I got turned into a baby and learned how to walk for the first time.
Outer Wilds is undoubtedly my favorite game ever. That used to be a spot with very stiff competition but I have yet to play a game that comes close to challenging Outer Wilds, at least since playing the DLC.
If you're of legal drinking age, take a sip every time Connor lands in the black hole. Yes a sip; your liver absolutely _cannot_ withstand that number of straight-up shots.
The DLC will confuse you at first, then it makes you shit your pants and lastly it'll make you cry a little at the end. My journey at least, YMMD. Now somebody please hurry up and lobotomize me already so I can play this thing for the first time again!
That’s the perfect way to describe the DLC roller coaster 😂 first I had my head in my hands trying to figure out what I was missing, then I didn’t blink or breathe for a while. And then I sobbed like a baby. 10/10
Absolute bangers dropping recently!! These super long game videos must've taken a lot of time and effort, I can't even imagine. I always love sitting down and relaxing with them. Outer wilds is a game I don't think I could have the patience to play, but I knew I'd definitely read it if it was a novel since the story has sounded so cool from the glimpses I've heard. It's really nice to be able to watch someone go through it.
I loved watching this live, it was a legendary playthrough. Happy to have a fully and masterfully edited super cut to come back and enjoy now. But also, whichever editor added the piano theme at 1:56:30 ... You are evil, can't be making me cry at my desk bro
I love that if you are unlucky/lucky you could have found the first location that allow you to finish the game but since you don't understand any thing since you don't have unlock the "knowledge" from the other place.
I do think he would've understood the story and resonated with the ending if he could've played it off stream and given the experience more time to breathe, but I'm really glad he enjoyed it. Always great to see new people playing it.
omg connor dlc yes please. This is legit one of my most loved games and I SO enjoy seeing people experience it for themselves. The dlc might ot shatter the universe or anything but it adds more mystery and stuff the explore and it is SO worth it.
With how this playthrough went, Connor appears to be in the highly enviable position of being able to play Outer Wilds for the first time twice! Jk, this is a fun video, just definitely not a game one should play in a single sitting. Once you’re playing to finish, you’re kinda looking at the game wrong
"Connor play DLC NOW" as requested lol Incredible playthrough and I'm so glad to see this game getting the love and attention it deserves! Fyi the DLC is also not doable in one sitting imo, maybe 2-3 but 1 would just be too much, it has all that "difficult but satisfying" puzzle stuff you enjoyed so much and it'd be a shame to see you not on top performance for it lol
Also, as a pitch for another game, check out Tunic, it starts as a cute Souls-like/Zelda-like but quickly goes into Outer Wilds territory of puzzles and mystery as you go deeper, and the final puzzle is perhaps my favourite in any game ever
Ngl this is genuinely the best game I have ever played, my friend played before me (also recommended I play it and watched my entire experience). The whole experience of slowly uncovering the story and mystery behind it makes this game just so much better than any other game I’ve played
Really enjoyed the video! This "type" of content you make, (the longer, more explanatory videos you make, like the one on Void Stranger) is my favorite! Also, if you are interested in a game "Like" Outer Wilds and Void Stranger, (in the sense that you have access to alot of things/abilities at the start, just dont understand how to do them yet) I suggest trying "Tunic"! It's definetly one of those "You can only truly experience this once" type of games

I am so extremely thankful that people like RT or Connor have played this game and streamed it for the world to see. Cause this is such a fantastic game its not even funny. And I cant play it. No. I am not disabled. I dont have any issues that would prevent me from playing it physically. But even watching the video at times fricking terrifies me to no end as I see the planets or the sun simply grow larger as you hurl yourself towards them. Even the black hole is something my mind just shuts off at and this primal fight or flight reaction takes over. Everything about this game to me feels so very wrong for all the wrong reasons and I hate that it does. I will never be able to experience it myself cause I just cannot handle it.

@@Starburstnova just dont expect too much with tunic
Thanks for the 0:30 Warning. I have much respect for your approach. I bought the game but don't have much time with it, I will exit the video, and I hope to come back once I finish it; here is a like to the video in the meantime.
What do you think ?
@@antoniosottomayor6252 my brother, its only been 3 hours. Let the man play it first lol

The only games like these that I know are Tunic, Rain World, and Chants of Senaar. Dunno if there's anything else like it...
@@eleuuuuu It depends on what you are looking for. A lot of people on the subreddit compare the game to Subnotica. I personally would add Return of the Obra Dinn. Chants of Sennar and Tunic are world class, but I'll check out rain world.
which makes it even worse if you try to bring your friends into the game but they either refuse or stop midway through. its maddening
I absolutely love at 40:10 when he's watching the EXACT MOON he was talking about and doesn't realize it. Realizing that in game for me was mindblowing
My favorite thing about this game is the how the DLC is introduced. It uses the same element of "knowledge" being the only thing blocking your progress, so that when you start, it feels like a new location that was always there the whole time
It was always there the whole time.
@@Deadgyein terms of the lore, obviously. But it’s out of the way such that you wouldn’t notice it’s not there unless you have the DLC installed
what I love, is all the mechanics to solve the DLC is speedrunning tactics. Not gonna list them, cuz it's spoilers, but its so funny and very thematic with the DLCs theme
@@Geadsss I never even thought of it that way!

Very different but still somewhat similar - have you played tunic? It's also one of those "don't look anything up" games :)
You must have a small game library if you’ve never played another game that doesn’t tell you anything. No insult intended, and it is very very rare if you’re a younger person because most games now a days are spoonfed.
Someone didn't play Minecraft 10 years ago

@HarryLLC gotta watch Atrioc's playthru it's as satisfying as it is frustrating
Same here! The Thor and Conner play through club is a tight knit one
I recommend AboutOliver's play through. He is an Astrophysicist and has one of the most fun playthroughts I have seen. @HarryLLC
@HarryLLCthere’s a reason why the fanbase says Oliver’s is probably one of if not THE BEST recorded playthroughs of the game
@@ShadowDancer1000 About Oliver's playthrough is definitely my favourite, but ShortOneGaming's and Vinny's are great, too!
So again, if you have any interest in this game and don’t know what it is, go play it for yourself because you only get one first play through, meaning one genuine experience of learning the game’s secrets
yeah i was so excited when i saw it pop up on the vod channel a bit back, then i realized that he played it all in one sitting which was quite sad
I mean if it's only a 16 hour game I feel like it would be hard not to do it in one session for a lot of people
@@noodlelynoodle. the average is 21 and a half to 22 fittingly enough.
And at least for me games like that where they are knowledge based playing them all in one sitting makes the most sense cause most of the stuff isn't stuff that's ever going to be put into my long term memory cause it's simply not important enough for it too meaning if I split it off into 2 sessions I'll have forgotten way more than if I just kept playing but then again I am someone who prefers to binge everything even like college classes by doing the summer ones that are 1/3 the days but cover the same amount, I absorb more when it's crammed together into a short time frame than if it's drawn out over days or weeks
the DLC is quite literally a masterpiece on its own
The editing on the eye was fantastic, nothing less than what outer wilds deserves
Holy shit PLEASE play the dlc

This game is probably one of the very few games I would consider a masterpiece, truly one of the best gaming experiences you can ever have.
I love it.
That title drop
ngl like many people i was disappointed to see connor playing this all in one go but i'm so so glad to see how much he still enjoyed it despite the 16 hr grind!! as tempting as it is to backseat this kind of game, the joy in seeing someone else get to experience outer wilds in all of its endless mysteries and wonders is unmatched. can't wait to see him play the DLC!!!

Outer Wilds is such an amazing experience and there's truly very few gaming experiences that are similar and executed so well
You come to this game for the fun idea of exploring a solar system and the cute designs, you stay for the existential cosmic dread and Majora’s Mask mechanics.
The intro should be a mandatory PSA in front of every Outer Wilds playthrough

Absolute bangers dropping recently!! These super long game videos must've taken a lot of time and effort, I can't even imagine. I always love sitting down and relaxing with them. Outer wilds is a game I don't think I could have the patience to play, but I knew I'd definitely read it if it was a novel since the story has sounded so cool from the glimpses I've heard. It's really nice to be able to watch someone go through it.
It's crazy that this is the studio's 1st game.

omg connor dlc yes please.

Incredible playthrough and I'm so glad to see this game getting the love and attention it deserves!

Aaaah.... Time to watch another human play the best game of all times for the 449 time because I can't play it anymore and I need my dose
